Book excerpt: These notes are based on the lectures given on partial differential equations at the University of Michigan during the winter semester of 1972, with some extensions. The students to whom these lectures were addressed were assumed to have knowledge of elementary functional analysis, the Fourier transform, distribution theory, and Sobolev spaces, and such tools are used without comment. In this monography, we develop one tool, the calculus of pseudo differential operators, and apply it to several of the main problems of partial differential equations.

Book excerpt: There has recently been a renewal of interest in Fokker-Planck operators, motivated by problems in statistical physics, in kinetic equations, and differential geometry. Compared to more standard problems in the spectral theory of partial differential operators, those operators are not self-adjoint and only hypoelliptic. The aim of the analysis is to give, as generally as possible, an accurate qualitative and quantitative description of the exponential return to the thermodynamical equilibrium. While exploring and improving recent results in this direction, this volume proposes a review of known techniques on: the hypoellipticity of polynomial of vector fields and its global counterpart, the global Weyl-Hörmander pseudo-differential calculus, the spectral theory of non-self-adjoint operators, the semi-classical analysis of Schrödinger-type operators, the Witten complexes, and the Morse inequalities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pseudo-differential operators were initiated by Kohn, Nirenberg and Hörmander in the sixties of the last century. Beside applications in the general theory of partial differential equations, they have their roots also in the study of quantization first envisaged by Hermann Weyl thirty years earlier. Thanks to the understanding of the connections of wavelets with other branches of mathematical analysis, quantum physics and engineering, such operators have been used under different names as mathematical models in signal analysis since the last decade of the last century. The volume investigates the mathematics of quantization and signals in the context of pseudo-differential operators, Weyl transforms, Daubechies operators, Wick quantization and time-frequency localization operators. Applications to quantization, signal analysis and the modern theory of PDE are highlighted.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the workshop on Analysis and Geometry in Several Complex Variables, held from January 4–8, 2015, at Texas A&M University at Qatar, Doha, Qatar. This volume covers many topics of current interest in several complex variables, CR geometry, and the related area of overdetermined systems of complex vector fields, as well as emerging trends in these areas. Papers feature original research on diverse topics such as the rigidity of CR mappings, normal forms in CR geometry, the d-bar Neumann operator, asymptotic expansion of the Bergman kernel, and hypoellipticity of complex vector fields. Also included are two survey articles on complex Brunn-Minkowski theory and the regularity of systems of complex vector fields and their associated Laplacians.

This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have tried in this book to describe those aspects of pseudodifferential and Fourier integral operator theory whose usefulness seems proven and which, from the viewpoint of organization and "presentability," appear to have stabilized. Since, in my opinion, the main justification for studying these operators is pragmatic, much attention has been paid to explaining their handling and to giving examples of their use. Thus the theoretical chapters usually begin with a section in which the construction of special solutions of linear partial differential equations is carried out, constructions from which the subsequent theory has emerged and which continue to motivate it: parametrices of elliptic equations in Chapter I (introducing pseudodifferen tial operators of type 1, 0, which here are called standard), of hypoelliptic equations in Chapter IV (devoted to pseudodifferential operators of type p, 8), fundamental solutions of strongly hyperbolic Cauchy problems in Chap ter VI (which introduces, from a "naive" standpoint, Fourier integral operators), and of certain nonhyperbolic forward Cauchy problems in Chapter X (Fourier integral operators with complex phase). Several chapters-II, III, IX, XI, and XII-are devoted entirely to applications. Chapter II provides all the facts about pseudodifferential operators needed in the proof of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem, then goes on to present part of the results of A. Calderon on uniqueness in the Cauchy problem, and ends with a new proof (due to J. J. Kohn) of the celebrated sum-of-squares theorem of L. Hormander, a proof that beautifully demon strates the advantages of using pseudodifferential operators.

Book excerpt: In this volume two topics are discussed: the construction of Feller and Lp-sub-Markovian semigroups by starting with a pseudo-differential operator, and the potential theory of these semigroups and their generators. The first part of the text essentially discusses the analysis of pseudo-differential operators with negative definite symbols and develops a symbolic calculus; in addition, it deals with special approaches, such as subordination in the sense of Bochner. The second part handles capacities, function spaces associated with continuous negative definite functions, Lp -sub-Markovian semigroups in their associated Bessel potential spaces, Stein's Littlewood-Paley theory, global properties of Lp-sub-Markovian semigroups, and estimates for transition functions.
