How do these differences, and these frequent changes, affect the operation of democracy? Using a unique new data collection, the book's chapters test propositions about the reasons for variation and similarities across party organizations. They find more evidence of within-country similarity than of cross-national patterns based on party ideology. Book excerpt: My research aims to explain levels and changes in levels of political participation through institutions and institutional change. Literature on political participation distinguishes three trends over time; a decline in 'representative' participation, an increase in 'extra-representative' participation, and an increase in 'direct' participation. Although there is variation, the notion that there are three changing trends seemingly present in most established democracies is striking and puzzling. Moreover, since participation is strongly linked to the health of democracy, it seems important to find an explanation for these trends. This study specifically contributes to the debate about the current state and health of democracy, considering that it is concerned with both system changes in democracies and levels of popular participation in these democracies. Changes in these types of participation could be explained by the structure of the political system. Here, the second aim of this study becomes clear. Although there is little doubt that institutions matter in political life, and although there has been some research on the effects of institutions, they have rarely been structurally examined in large-scale analyses, specifically in relation to participation. The structure of political systems is important, and it is important to better understand the effects of these structures.
