Book excerpt: Welcome to Southbridge, the "Eye of the Commonwealth," as it appeared from 1835 to 1955. Incorporated in 1816, Southbridge is comprised of land once part of the towns of Charlton, Dudley, and Sturbridge. The town's first settler was James Deneson, who came to the area in 1730 and spent a short time in a rock shelter just south of the Quinebaug River before building a dwelling for himself and his family. By 1732, more pioneers had arrived, and Moses Marcy set up sawmill operations downstream from the Deneson farm. Marcy's sawmill was just a hint of the industry that prospered in the town over the next two hundred years. Southbridge presents historical images of the town as it grew and thrived during and after the Industrial Revolution, from the Globe Manufacturing Company to the world-renowned American Optical Company. Southbridge is defined not only by its industrial past. Equally important are the images of the commerce, agriculture, and everyday life of its people.

Book excerpt: Welcome to Sturbridge, Pennsylvania, a small, dead-end town with nothing to do and no way out. At least that's how Ben, a high school senior and the second-best 135-pound wrestler in school, sees it. But Ben's fed up with being stuck on the bench, watching as his friend Al, the state champion, gets all the glory. If Ben doesn't get his life in gear, he could end up like his father and the other men in Sturbridge--working on the line in the cinder block factory. Spurred on partly by a wise, intense young woman, and partly by a strength found deep within himself, Ben looks for a way out--his whole life depends on it. In the words of Newbery medalist Jerry Spinelli, "Wrestling Sturbridge isn't just an outstanding first novel; it's an outstanding novel, period."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do history museums and historic sites tell the richly diverse stories of the American people? What fascinates us most about American history? To help answer these questions, noted public historian Richard Rabinowitz examines the evolution of public history over the last half-century and highlights the new ways we have come to engage with our past. At the heart of this endeavor is what Rabinowitz calls "storyscapes--landscapes of engagement where individuals actively encounter stories of past lives. As storyscapes, museums become processes of narrative interplay rather than moribund storage bins of strange relics. Storyscapes bring to life even the most obscure people--making their skills of hands and minds "touchable," making their voices heard despite their absence from traditional archives, and making the dilemmas and triumphs of their lives accessible to us today. Rabinowitz's wealth of professional experience--creating over 500 history museums, exhibitions, and educational programs across the nation--shapes and informs the narrative. By weaving insights from learning theory, anthropology and geography, politics and finance, collections and preservation policy, and interpretive media, Rabinowitz reveals how the nation's best museums and historic sites allow visitors to confront their sense of time and place, memories of family and community, and definitions of self and the world while expanding their idea of where they stand in the flow of history.

He has spoken of the origin of this interest, and its progress, somewhat in detail. He has sketched the early movements of the temperance reformation, and also for Spreading the Gospel. Making his sketch a little more general, he has given his views of the administration of the general Government, from its origin to the present time.
