Courtney was sixteen and Heidi was eleven. I used this new found, independence to act in Community Theater. It suddenly dawned on me that I was FINALLY doing what I desired to do for the past 34 years. To become an actor. That desire started after seeing James Dean act in the film, East of Eden. It was as if everything had gone full circle. Upon completion of my roles in that first musical, Beauty and the Beast, I was motivated to write an article for The Deanzine, the official magazine of the James Dean Remembered Fan Club. I showed the article to Debbie, my significant other, who said I had enough material to expand the article (which appeared in two separate issues of the magazine), into a book. So I wrote it out in long hand first and refined it by adding photographs in the final typed version. I have written this for not only James Dean fans, but also for those who have been, told their dreams would be impossible. It is a book essentially about the trials and tribulations of life. There are obstacles that stand in our way that we must hurdle over or punch our way through.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of Mystery Train and Lipstick Traces, an exhilarating and provocative investigation of the tangle of American identity "America is a place and a story, made up of exuberance and suspicion, crime and liberation, lynch mobs and escapes; its greatest testaments are made of portents and warnings, biblical allusions that lose all certainty in the American air." It is this story of self-invention and nationhood that Greil Marcus rediscovers, beginning with John Winthrop's invocation of America as a "city on the hill," Lincoln's second inaugural address, and Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech about his American dream. Listening to these prophetic founding statements, Marcus explores America's promise as a New Jerusalem and the nature of its covenant: first with God, and then with its own citizens. In the nineteenth century, this vision of the nation's story was told in public as part of common discourse, to be fought over in plain speech and flights of gorgeous rhetoric. Since then, Marcus argues, it has become cryptic, a story told more in art than in politics. He traces it across the continent and through time, hearing the tale in the disparate voices of writers, filmmakers, performers, and actors: Philip Roth, David Lynch, David Thomas, Allen Ginsberg, Sheryl Lee, and Bill Pullman. In The Shape of Things to Come, the future and the past merge in extraordinary and uncanny ways, and Marcus proves once again that he is our most imaginative and original cultural critic.

Book excerpt: New Foreword by Irvine Welsh. In Before We Was We Madness tell us how they became them. A story of seven originals, whose collective graft, energy and talent took them from the sweaty depths of the Hope and Anchor's basement to the Top of the Pops studio. In their own words they each look back on shared adventures. Playing music together, riding freight trains, spraying graffiti and stealing records. Walking in one another's footsteps by day and rising up through the city's exploding pub music scene by night. Before We Was We is irreverent, funny and full of character. Just like them.

Book excerpt: A gorgeous hardcover time capsule of the emo music scene as it was from 1996 to 2006, featuring never-before-seen photographs and never-before-told stories from key emo musicians, photographers, and icons. While the term emo has become a familiar label, there was a time when that wasn’t the case. Many bands of the mid-to-late '90s would never have classified themselves as such. With the advent of the 2000s, the previously underground emo scene was put on the map, and the term and sound of the genre morphed into something new. Today, the musical and cultural impact of this movement is alive and well, responsible for some of the biggest and most influential acts of the 21st century, from Jimmy Eat World to My Chemical Romance, and the emo label has been reclaimed by those who can’t imagine life without it. Through rare and never-before-seen photographs Amy Fleisher Madden, founder of Fiddler Records (Dashboard Confessional, New Found Glory, Recover, and more), thoughtfully and lovingly put together this moving archive of the second and third waves of emo. With a foreword by Chris Carrabba of Dashboard Confessional and revealing essays from Frank Iero, Geoff Rickly, Norman Brannon, and Matt Pryor, as well as insights and bite-sized narratives from photographers and other musicians of the era, this heartwarming time capsule expounds an extraordinary moment in music history—a scene that gave life to not only numerous big names but also to a powerful sound and even more powerful friendships. Featuring more than eighty bands, including: Jimmy Eat World Dashboard Confessional My Chemical Romance Texas Is the Reason Taking Back Sunday The Get Up Kids Thursday Fall Out Boy American Football Jawbreaker From basements and VFW halls to dive bars and holes-in-the-wall, during long overnight drives through the middle of nowhere and stolen moments of sleep in carbon-copy motels, Negatives captures the heart of what made up this tight-knit community, an official archive of life as it was, taking you on stage, behind the curtain, and on the road. A UNIQUE LOVE LETTER FROM EXPERT AUTHOR: The first of its kind, Negatives is not a critic's take—rather a touching and heartfelt time capsule and photographic archive of the scene as told by those who lived it. RARE AND NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN MATERIAL: Founder of Fiddler Records Amy Fleisher Madden compiles hundreds of high-quality photos of more than eighty bands, as well as essays and bite-sized narratives from photographers and key musicians of the era. STAR CONTRIBUTORS: Foreword by Chris Carrabba (Dashboard Confessional) with essays by Frank Iero (My Chemical Romance), Geoff Rickly (Thursday), Norman Brannon (Texas Is the Reason), Matt Pryor (The Get Up Kids), Jesse Johnson (Motion City Soundtrack), Bob Nanna (Braid, Hey Mercedes), and Andrew McMahon (Something Corporate). A MUSIC GIFT FOR EVERY EMO FAN: Focusing on the second and third waves (1996–2006), Negatives includes hundreds of high-quality images of bands including Jimmy Eat World, Dashboard Confessional, My Chemical Romance, Texas Is the Reason, Taking Back Sunday, The Get Up Kids, Thursday, The Promise Ring, American Football, Saosin, and more. Perfect for: Emo fans of all kinds and all waves Fans of second-wave bands like Sunny Day Real Estate, third-wave bands like My Chemical Romance, and indie emo bands like Death Cab for Cutie Music history fans Musicians and aspiring musicians Photography enthusiasts Music lover's gift idea for birthday, graduation, holiday, or any special occasion

Book excerpt: With exclusive access to Strummer's friends, relatives, and fellow musicians, music journalist Chris Salewicz penetrates the soul of an rock 'n roll icon. The Clash was--and still is--one of the most important groups of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Indebted to rockabilly, reggae, Memphis soul, cowboy justice, and '60s protest, the overtly political band railed against war, racism, and a dead-end economy, and in the process imparted a conscience to punk. Their eponymous first record and London Calling still rank in Rolling Stone's top-ten best albums of all time, and in 2003 they were officially inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Joe Strummer was the Clash's front man, a rock-and-roll hero seen by many as the personification of outlaw integrity and street cool. The political heart of the Clash, Strummer synthesized gritty toughness and poetic sensitivity in a manner that still resonates with listeners, and his untimely death in December 2002 shook the world, further solidifying his iconic status. Salewicz was a friend to Strummer for close to three decades and has covered the Clash's career and the entire punk movement from its inception. He uses his vantage point to write Redemption Song, the definitive biography of Strummer, charting his enormous worldwide success, his bleak years in the wilderness after the Clash's bitter breakup, and his triumphant return to stardom at the end of his life. Salewicz argues for Strummer's place in a long line of protest singers that includes Woody Guthrie, John Lennon, and Bob Marley, and examines by turns Strummer's and punk's ongoing cultural influence.

Book excerpt: A bewitching memoir about the lures, torments, and rewards of making and performing music in the indie rock world Dean Wareham's seminal bands Galaxie 500 and Luna have long been adored by a devoted cult following and extolled by rock critics. Now he brings us the blunt, heartbreaking, and wickedly charismatic account of his personal journey through the music world-the artistry and the hustle, the effortless success and the high living, as well as the bitter pills and self-inflicted wounds. It captures, unsparingly, what has happened to the entire ecosystem of popular music over a time of radical change, when categories such as "indie" and "alternative" meant nothing to those creating the music, but everything to the major labels willing to pay for it. Black Postcards is a must-have for Wareham's many fans, anyone who has ever been in a band, or the listeners who have taken an interest in the indie rock scene over the last twenty years.
