Book excerpt: Abstract: As both a methodology and a method, the Documentary Method represents one way of scientifically analyzing various phenomena in schools. The Documentary Method was originally developed in Germany, and discussions on its further development remain ongoing in the German-speaking scientific community. Simultaneously, the method has also gained recognition and use in English-speaking scientific contexts in recent years, including in the field of research on and in schools. Against this background, the present contribution reveals the results of a study review of the use of the Documentary Method in the field of research on and in schools in English-language literature. In order to yield a better understanding of the results, some key assumptions about the Documentary Method and its use in research on and in schools are additionally presented. The contribution ends with a summary of research desiderata. (DIPF/Orig.)

This book was released on 2004-05-21 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central idea of evidence-based education-that education policy and practice ought to be fashioned based on what is known from rigorous research-offers a compelling way to approach reform efforts. Recent federal trends reflect a growing enthusiasm for such change. Most visibly, the 2002 No Child Left Behind Act requires that "scientifically based [education] research" drive the use of federal education funds at the state and local levels. This emphasis is also reflected in a number of government and nongovernment initiatives across the country. As consensus builds around the goals of evidence-based education, consideration of what it will take to make it a reality becomes the crucial next step. In this context, the Center for Education of the National Research Council (NRC) has undertaken a series of activities to address issues related to the quality of scientific education research. In 2002, the NRC released Scientific Research in Education (National Research Council, 2002), a report designed to articulate the nature of scientific education research and to guide efforts aimed at improving its quality. Building on this work, the Committee on Research in Education was convened to advance an improved understanding of a scientific approach to addressing education problems; to engage the field of education research in action-oriented dialogue about how to further the accumulation of scientific knowledge; and to coordinate, support, and promote cross-fertilization among NRC efforts in education research. The main locus of activity undertaken to meet these objectives was a year-long series of workshops. This report is a summary of the third workshop in the series, on the implementation and implications of randomized field trials in education.

It makes sense of literature in this area, and shows how to generate collaborations and communicate findings. They also highlight the place of case study as a key component of educational research. With the help of this book, M-Level students, teacher educators and practitioner researchers will gain the confidence and skills needed to design and conduct a high quality case study. Dr Lorna Hamilton is a Senior Lecturer in Education Research at the University of Edinburgh. Dr Connie Corbett-Whittier is an Associate Professor of English and Humanities at Friends University, Topeka, Kansas. ′Drawing on a wide range of their own and others′ experiences, the authors offer a comprehensive and convincing account of the value of case study in educational research. What comes across - quite passionately - is the way in which a case study approach can bring to life some of the complexities, challenges and contradictions inherent in educational settings. It is a highly interactive text with a critical edge and is a useful tool for teaching. It is of particular relevance to practitioner researchers, providing accessible guidance for reflective practice. It covers key matters such as: purposes, ethics, data analysis, technology, dissemination and communities for research. And it is a good read!′ - Professor Anne Campbell, formerly of Leeds Metropolitan University ′This excellent book is a principled and theoretically informed guide to case study research design and methods for the collection, analysis and presentatin of evidence′ - Professor Andrew Pollard, Institute of Education, University of London Research Methods in Education series: Each book in this series maps the territory of a key research approach or topic in order to help readers progress from beginner to advanced researcher.
