Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Echoing Chuck Palahniuk's statement, "Nothing of me is original. I am the combined effort of everyone I've ever known," this collection explores identity. These poems drift down rivers of old, using histories private and public and visit with people that I love and loathe. Through heroes and villains, music and cartoons, literature and comics, science and wonder, and shadow and light, each poem canals the various channels of self and invention. As in the poem, "Credentials," "I am a collage of memories and unicorn stickers . . . [by] those that have witnessed and been witnessed."

The papers on the contributions of African- America figures, such as Zora Neale Hurston, are noteworthy. Of particular interest are the suggestions for teaching Florida Studies in the classroom, which can be adapted for high school as well as college students.
Book Synopsis Reading and Pronouncing Biblical Greek by : Philemon Zachariou
Download or read book Reading and Pronouncing Biblical Greek written by Philemon Zachariou and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-06-08 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book invites you to see not only how Hellenistic Koine ought to be pronounced but also why. Rigorously investigating the history of Greek orthography and sounds from classical times to the present, the author places linguistic findings on one side of the scale and related events on the other. The result is a balance between the evidence of the historical Greek sounds in Koine and pre-Koine times, and the political events that derailed those sounds as they were being transported through Europe’s Renaissance academia and replaced them with Erasmian. This book argues for a return to the historical Greek sounds now preserved in Neohellenic (Modern Greek) as a step toward mending the Erasmian dichotomy that rendered post-Koine Greek irrelevant to New Testament Greek studies. The goal is a holistic and diachronic application of the Hellenic language and literature to illume exegetically the Greek text, as the New Testament contains numerous features that have close affinity with Neohellenic and should not be left unexplored.

Book Synopsis Foreknowledge and Social Identity in 1 Peter by : Paul A. Himes
Download or read book Foreknowledge and Social Identity in 1 Peter written by Paul A. Himes and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-09-12 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the meaning and significance of foreknowledge in the book of 1 Peter, and how does the concept relate to the circumstances of its first recipients? Himes attempts to answer these questions by examining the concepts of both foreknowledge and social identity within the first century and how they fit into the theology of 1 Peter. In the process of elaborating the concepts of foreknowledge and social identity, this study provides one of the first thorough examinations of the words prognosis and proginosko in the literature of the time period when 1 Peter was composed and circulated. Himes argues that these words are linguistically relevant to how early hearers and readers would have understood the message of 1 Peter. In addition, this volume provides a thorough analysis of social-scientific criticism in 1 Peter, paying special attention to the various views about the social circumstances of the epistle's recipients. Finally, this book concerns itself with the biblical theology of 1 Peter, and with how the concept of foreknowledge functions as a word of comfort and hope to the beleaguered audience of this epistle.
Book Synopsis Interactive Task Learning by : Kevin A. Gluck
Download or read book Interactive Task Learning written by Kevin A. Gluck and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2019-08-16 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experts from a range of disciplines explore how humans and artificial agents can quickly learn completely new tasks through natural interactions with each other. Humans are not limited to a fixed set of innate or preprogrammed tasks. We learn quickly through language and other forms of natural interaction, and we improve our performance and teach others what we have learned. Understanding the mechanisms that underlie the acquisition of new tasks through natural interaction is an ongoing challenge. Advances in artificial intelligence, cognitive science, and robotics are leading us to future systems with human-like capabilities. A huge gap exists, however, between the highly specialized niche capabilities of current machine learning systems and the generality, flexibility, and in situ robustness of human instruction and learning. Drawing on expertise from multiple disciplines, this Strüngmann Forum Report explores how humans and artificial agents can quickly learn completely new tasks through natural interactions with each other. The contributors consider functional knowledge requirements, the ontology of interactive task learning, and the representation of task knowledge at multiple levels of abstraction. They explore natural forms of interactions among humans as well as the use of interaction to teach robots and software agents new tasks in complex, dynamic environments. They discuss research challenges and opportunities, including ethical considerations, and make proposals to further understanding of interactive task learning and create new capabilities in assistive robotics, healthcare, education, training, and gaming.
