This book was released on 1949 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Part 1 a point-by-point method is developed for the calculation of unsteady flows through tubes with variable cross sections containing strong shocks and large temperature contact discontinuities. In Part 2 calculations are made of the flow pattern created by bursting into a vacuum of a diaphragm at the minimum section of a supersonic nozzle without a second throat. In Part 3 integral relationships are developed which describe as a whole the behavior of unsteady flow disturbances of large and small amplitudes. The invariant integrals are the conservation laws for the potential, pulse area, mass, and energy.

Book Synopsis Interaction of Moving Shocks and Hot Layers by : Robert V. Hess
Download or read book Interaction of Moving Shocks and Hot Layers written by Robert V. Hess and published by . This book was released on 1957 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper treats the interaction between hot layers extended along the wall and normal or oblique shocks moving over them. Emphasis is on the cases of large hot-layer temperatures and strong shock waves for which small-perturbation theories are not applicable. A variety of possible interaction patterns are described. Of greatest interest are the more extreme cases when the hot layer is forced to accumulate in a growing bubble-like region bound to the moving shock, and some of the cold air above the layer moves around the bubble and interposes a high-speed forward-moving cold jet between the wall and the bubble. For some cases, especially with oblique shocks, this reverse jet may not form. Mixing will eventually limit the size of the bubble and make its characteristics more nearly like those of the more familiar separation bubbles. The effects of viscosity at the wall remains essentially different, however, since the shock is moving relative to the wall.
Book Synopsis A Study of the Transient Behavior of Shock Waves in Transonic Channel Flows by : Robert V. Hess

This book was released on 1952 with total page 734 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The accuracy of the result obtained in a fundamental paper by Kantrowitz (NACA TN 1225) that a small short-time lowering of the back pressure in steady, shock-free, transonic diffuser flow causes a stationary or trapped shock to form near the critical sonic channel throat is investigated by considering the contribution of a higher-order term in the short-time calculations which was neglected in Kantrowitz's paper. In this higher approximation to the short-time effects, the shock is no longer stationary or trapped unless it is supported by a negative steady-flow back pressure; the result thus is no long in disagreement with steady-flow solutions for stationary shocks.

Book Synopsis Aerodynamic Properties of Cruciform-wing and Body Combinations at Subsonic, Transonic, and Supersonic Speeds by : John R. Spreiter
Download or read book Aerodynamic Properties of Cruciform-wing and Body Combinations at Subsonic, Transonic, and Supersonic Speeds written by John R. Spreiter and published by . This book was released on 1949 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aerodynamic forces and moments exerted on pitched and yawed wing-body combinations consisting of a slender body of revolution and a cruciform arrangement of thin wings have been investigated by two theoretical methods. One method, an extension of the slender wing-body theory of NACA TN No. 1662, makes possible the determination of simple closed expressions for the load distribution, of simple closed expressions for the load distribution, the forces, and the moments for slender cruciform-wing and body combinations in which the wings may be dissimilar plan form. The second method treats cruciform-wing and body combinations consisting of a body of revolution and identical wings of arbitrary aspect ratio and plan form. The results are valid at subsonic, transonic, and supersonic speeds.
Book Synopsis Strength and Ductility of Bainitic Steels by : Donald H. Desy
Download or read book Strength and Ductility of Bainitic Steels written by Donald H. Desy and published by . This book was released on 1957 with total page 898 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of the factors believed to affect the strength and ductile-to-brittle transition temperature of bainitic steels, including mean ferrite path and degree of internal strain, have been studied. Strength was measured by diamond pyramid hardness, and transition temperature was obtained from a tensile impact test on small notched specimens. Seven laboratory heats of carbon-molybdenum steel and two heats of carbon steel were transformed isothermally to bainite at various temperatures and tested. Mean-ferrite-path measurements were made on electron micrographs of three of these steels. The mean ferrite path was found to have only a slight effect on the strength of bainite and no effect on the transition temperature. Preliminary measurements of X-ray line broadening indicate that the degree of internal strain may be the controlling factor in determining the strength of bainite. The transition temperatures of the bainites fell within a band between -80 and -160 degrees C and did not vary regularly with hardness, carbon or alloy content, or mean ferrite path. In the SAE 1062 steel at high strength levels, bainite has a transition temperature lower than that of tempered martensite at the same strength level.
