In addition a preliminary measurement of the branching fraction of the {tau}{sup -} {yields} 3h{sup -}2h{sup +} {nu}{sub {tau}} decay (h = {pi}, K) is presented.

The analysis uses 232 fb−1 of data at center-of-mass energies on or near the Upsilon(4S) resonance. In the search for the tau− -> 5pi−2pi2pi0nu[tau] decay, we observe 10 events with an expected background of 6.5+2̇0−1.4 events. In the absence of a signal, we calculate the decay branching ratio upper limit B(tau− -> 5pi−2pi+2pi0nu[tau]) 3.4x10−6 at 90% confidence level. This is more than a factor of 30 improvement over the previously established limit. In addition, we search for the exclusive decay mode tau− - 2omega.pi−nu[tau] with the further decay of omega -> pi−pi+pi0. We observe 1 event, expecting 0.4+1̇0−0.4 background events, and calculate the upper limit B(tau− -> 2omega.pi−nu[tau])

This result is the world's most precise measurement of this branching fraction to date and is consistent with the world average.

Book excerpt: The Standard Model of particle physics predicts that the branching ratio for the rare decay B{sup 0} {yields} {tau}{sup +}{tau}{sup -} is 3.1 x 10{sup -8}, though untested models which could supersede it predict large enhancements. This dissertation describes the search for this rare decay in 210.4 fb{sup -1} of B{sup 0}{bar B}{sup 0} data collected at the {Upsilon}(4S) resonance in the Babar detector at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. In the analysis, one neutral B meson is fully reconstructed in a hadronic mode and recoil events which are consistent with each tau decaying in a mode {tau} {yields} {pi}{nu}, {rho}{nu}, or l{nu}{bar {nu}} are selected. There is no evidence for signal. The result is consistent with a downward fluctuation by 1.1 statistical standard deviations of the expected Standard Model background. Taking the expected background, the number of observed events and the expected statistical and systematic errors into account yields 2.7 x 10{sup -3} as the upper limit for B{sup 0} {yields} {tau}{sup +}{tau}{sup -} at the 90% confidence level.

The branching fractions of?− 2!?−?−?+,?− 2!K−?−?+?, and?− 2!K−?−K+? are measured with higher precision than previously published results and the inclusive branching fraction?− 2!K−K−K+? is measured for the first time. In addition, the first measurement of the branching fraction?− 2!?−?? and the measurement of the branching fraction?− 2!K−?? are determined by means of a binned maximum likelihood fit to the K+K− invariant mass distribution. These branching fractions are extracted by means of a migration matrix that accounts for the cross contamination between the?− 2!h−h−h+? modes. The preliminary?− 2!K−?°? branching fraction and invariant mass distributions are also presented in this paper.

The analysis is based on a data sample of 427 x 106 [tau]+[tau]- pairs recorded with the BABAR detector, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 464.4 fb-1. The measured values are [beta]([tau]- 2!K-[nu][tau]) = (6.57 ± 0.03 ± 0.11) x 10-3, [beta]([tau]- 2!K-[pi]0[nu][tau]) = (4.61 ± 0.03 ± 0.11) x 10-3, [beta]([tau]- 2!K- [pi]0[pi]0[nu][tau]) = (5.05 ± 0.17 ± 0.44) x 10-4, [beta]([tau]- 2!K-[pi]0[pi]0[pi]0[nu][tau]) = (1.31 ± 0.43 ± 0.40) x 10-4, [beta]([tau]0 2![pi]0[pi]0[pi]0[pi]0[nu][tau]) = (1.263 ± 0.008 ± 0.078) x 10-2 and [beta]([tau]0 2![pi]0[pi]0[pi]0[pi]0[pi]0[nu][tau]) = (9.6 ± 0.5 ± 1.2) x 10-4, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. All measurements are compatible with the current world averages whereas the uncertainties are significantly smaller by a factor of up to five. The determination of [beta]([tau]0 2![pi]-[pi]0[pi]0[pi]0[pi]0v[tau]) is the first measurement of this branching fraction. The measured branching fractions are combined with the current world averages. Using the new averages, an updated determination of.
