Book excerpt: This research is mostly planned to enhance the fatigue properties of PM steels inasmuch as they are extensively replacing their equivalent wrought steels due mostly to production cost benefits. This goal is going to be achieved through determining the most effective microstructure of PM steels in cyclic loadings. The most effective microstructure is the one that can reduce or stop the fatigue crack propagation through the proper combination of its constituent phases. There exists some researches on this topic, however, they did not reach consistent conclusions due to the lack of sufficient data and/or improper comparison. Therefore, the effect of different constituent phases of a heterogeneous microstructure of a PM steel is still ambiguous and unknown. In order to study this issue, diverse microstructures and the fatigue crack propagation behaviour through them should be studied. Our research begins by choosing two common PM steels manufactured using two alloying techniques of admixed and pre-alloyed to produce heterogeneous and homogeneous microstructures respectively. Two types of heat-treatments namely sinter-hardening and oil-quenching were also utilized to provide more microstructural phases that is needed for the purpose of this study. The samples were then tested in cycling loading using different R-ratio in order to study the effect of fatigue conditions as well. Quantitative analysis of the fracture surfaces, which includes the detailed study of the crack path in OM and SEM, were then performed on the fractured samples. The fatigue crack growth rate data in different PM steels having different microstructures along with the quantitative data acquired from their crack path led us to interesting results on the effect of microstructural constituents on fatigue crack propagation behaviour. It was found that the fatigue crack will propagate more rapidly through the weakest i.e. lowest strength phase among the ones present in the microstructure. Thus, pearlite was not favourable for crack propagation in the company of Ni-rich ferrite while in the presence of martensite, pearlitic grains were found to be the preferred crack path. Moreover, the retained austenite, which was identified in literature to be a beneficial phase for fatigue crack retardation, was found to be ineffective on the matter. Although fatigue cracks circumvented these regions, the deflection caused by this change of crack path did not show any positive effect on fatigue crack retardation.

Book excerpt: What can be added to the fracture mechanics of metal fatigue that has not already been said since the 1900s? From the view point of the material and structure engineer, there are many aspects of failure by fatigue that are in need of attention, particularly when the size and time of the working components are changed by orders of magnitude from those considered by st traditional means. The 21 century marks an era of technology transition where structures are made larger and devices are made smaller, rendering the method of destructive testing unpractical. While health monitoring entered the field of science and engineering, the practitioners are discovering that the correlation between the signal and the location of interest depends on a priori knowledge of where failure may initiate. This information is not easy to find because the integrity of the physical system will change with time. Required is software that can self-adjust in time according to the monitored data. In this connection, effective application of health monitoring can use a predictive model of fatigue crack growth. Earlier fatigue crack growth models assumed functional dependence on the maximum stress and the size of the pre-existing crack or defect. Various possibilities were examined in the hope that the data could be grouped such that linear interpolation would apply.

Book excerpt: Fatigue tests were performed on ultra-high strength steels to assess (i) the influence of strength at constant grain size, and (ii) the influence of grain size at constant strength, on threshold stress intensity and near-threshold crack propagation rates. The results constitute part of a larger program of research to characterize the microstructural influences on fatigue crack propagation at growth rates less than 10−5 mm/cycle in an attempt to provide a basis for the design of alloys resistant to low growth rate fatigue failure.

Book excerpt: The microstructural variability existing in weld heat-affected zones (HAZ) of SA533 Grade B steel has a strong influence on the fatigue crack growth rate of the material in a simulated nuclear reactor environment. In particular, considerably high susceptibility to environmentally enhanced cracking has been noted in the coarse grains of tempered martensite. This phenomenon is considered to be important not only in connection with predicting the cracking of the weld HAZ structures but also in elucidating the mechanism of crack growth enhancement in the high-temperature water environment. The materials used in the study are primarily SA533 Grade B and several other low-alloy steels including SA387, SA542, SA543, JIS SPV 46Q, and AISI 4340. Different heat treatments were given to these alloys to obtain a variety of microstructures and strengths. The results obtained show a general tendency for the crack growth rates of higher-strength materials to be more substantially accelerated in the simulated boiling-water reactor (BWR) water environment as the stress ratio is shifted from 0.1 to 0.5. In order to explore the operation of the cracking mechanism under dynamic loading, slow strain rate tests (SSRTs) were also performed. As with the cyclic crack growth rate tests, the materials with higher yield strengths exhibited highly enhanced crack growth rates and showed Ji values much reduced compared with those obtained in 288°C air. Furthermore, the crack growth rates under cyclic loading are directly compared with those obtained by the SSRT technique in terms of time-based crack growth rate in the water environment and in air by using plots of (da/dt)E versus (da/dt)air where (da/dt)E is the time-based crack growth rate in an aggressive environment and (da/dt)air is the rate in air. A satisfactory correspondence can be obtained between corrosion-fatigue test crack growth rates and those obtained by SSRTs.

Book excerpt: In this paper, we describe the interrelation between the microstructures of CrWMn high carbon steels of cold punch dies and strength, fracture resistance at static bending state, deflection and fracture toughness after various heat treatments. The influence of microstructures on the pregnant period of the fatigue crack No and the fatigue crack growth rate da/dN is also studied. Our experimental results show that after carbides refining pretreatment, the quenching and tempering structures have maximum strength, the No increases remarkably and the da/dN decreases at the low stress intensity factore Delta K range. After carbides refining pretreatment, the isothermal quenching structures have the best combination of strength and toughness of a mixed martensite structure with 50% bainite is obtained. It also can prolong the pregnant period of nucleation of fatigue cracks and reduce da/dN at the midstream intensity factor Delta K range. According to the examination of fatigue fractures by a scattering electron microscope, the fracture of a conventional quenching and tempering structure with coarse carbides is mainly intergranular.

Book excerpt: The history of steel dates back to the 17th century and has been instrumental in the betterment of every aspect of our lives ever since, from the pin that holds the paper together to the Automobile that takes us to our destination steel touch everyone every day. Path breaking improvements in manufacturing techniques, access to advanced machinery and understanding of factors like heat treatment, corrosion resistance have aided in the advancement in the properties of steel in the last few years. In this dissertation document the results of a study aimed at the influence of alloy chemistry, processing and influence of the quasi static and fatigue behavior of seven alloy steels is discussed. The microstructure of the as-received steel was examined and characterized for the nature and morphology of the grains and the presence of other intrinsic features in the microstructure. The tensile, cyclic fatigue and bending fatigue tests were done on a fully automated closed-loop servo-hydraulic test machine at room temperature. The failed samples of high strength steels were examined in a scanning electron microscope for understanding the fracture behavior, especially the nature of loading be it quasi static, cyclic fatigue or bending fatigue. The quasi static and cyclic fatigue fracture behavior of the steels examined coupled with various factors contributing to failure are briefly discussed in light of the conjoint and mutually interactive influences of intrinsic microstructural effects, nature of loading, and stress (load)-deformation-microstructural interactions.

This book was released on 1983 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue crack growth rate behavior in CORONA 5, an alloy developed for applications requiring high fracture toughness, has been examined for eight material conditions. These conditions were designed to give differences in microstructure, strength level, and oxygen content, in such a manner that the separate effects of these variables could be defined. For all eight conditions, fatigue crack growth rates (da/dN) are virtually indistinquishable over the full all spectrum of stress-intensity range (Delta K) examined. Concomitantly, it is noted that over the sizeable solution annealing range studied, the primary alpha-phase morphology was substantially invariant. A change in microfractographic appearance occurs at delta KT, as extensive secondary cracking along Alpha/Beta interfaces is observed at all hypertransitional levels of Delta K, but not for Delta K
