Book excerpt: The current and rising number of applications in the millimeter wave frequency bands has facilitated the use of new materials, interconnect, and electromagnetic modal transitions for traditional heterodyne receiver front ends. In terms of materials, LCP has emerged as a highly suitable material for applications requiring near-hermetic packaging. LCP’s light weight, low cost, flexibility, and low fabrication tolerances make it a pragmatic choice for integrated systems. In addition, its electrical performance features low loss, and stability of material properties up to high frequencies (DC – 170 GHz), and over wide range of environmental conditions. The work in this research proposal presents millimeter wave heterodyne front ends with electromagnetic transitions for both satellite communications, and Tokamak plasma imaging applications. In addition to presenting work in LCP, this work also introduces new diplexing structures for wideband, millimeter wave frequency extension applications of high sensitivity measurement instrumentation. The diplexing structures are incorporated into existing 1 mm coaxial-waveguide modal transitions, to achieve front-end instrumentation extension from 50 GHz up to 110 GHz. By combining both coaxial and waveguide filtering structures, low loss, good isolation, compactness, and high measurement system sensitivity can be achieved. Future work will focus on theoretical analysis, and optimization of the complex coaxial-waveguide diplexer junction problem, and offer novel insight into the operation and continued design of such devices for any front-end application.

This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this dissertation is to develop key components of a CMOS heterodyne millimeter-wave receiver front end. Robust designs are necessary to overcome PVT variations as well as modeling inaccuracies, while with minimum power consumption overhead to facilitate low-power radio for portable applications. Heterodyne receiver topology is adopted because of its robust performances at millimeter-wave frequencies. Device models for both passive and active devices are developed and used in the circuit designs in this dissertation.\r : Two low-noise amplifiers (LNAs) are developed in this dissertation. The first LNA features a proposed temperature-compensation biasing technique, which confines the gain variation within 5 dB for temperature variation from -5 to 85 Celsius degree. The measured gain and NF are 21 and 6.5 dB, respectively, for 49-mW power dissipation. The second LNA reveals a design technique to tolerate a low-accuracy model at millimeter-wave frequencies. Both LNAs provide full coverage of the FCC 60-GHz band (57-64 GHz).\r : For the frequency generation circuits, both the IF QVCO and mm-wave VCO are investigated. The inherent bimodal oscillation of QVCOs is analyzed and, for the first time, a systematic measurement technique is proposed to intentionally control the oscillation mode. This technique is further utilized to extend the tuning range of the QVCO, which possesses dual tuning curves without penalty on phase noise. The measurement results of a 13-GHz QVCO in 90-nm CMOS reveals a 21.4% tuning range for continuously tuning from 11.7 to 14.5 GHz. The measured phase noise is -108 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset with a core power consumption of 10.8 mW. A millimeter-wave VCO is designed and fabricated in 65-nm CMOS. The VCO is fully characterized under voltage stress to examine the hot-carrier injection effects affecting the performance of a millimeter-wave VCO. The 41.6-47.4 GHz VCO is further integrated into a millimeter-wave down converter. The power-hungry buffer amplifiers are neglected by proper floor planning. Conversion loss of 1.4 dB is obtained with total power consumption of 72.5 mW.\r : Lastly, a power management system consisting of low-dropout (LDO) regulators is designed and integrated in a 90-nm CMOS millimeter-wave transceiver to provide stable and low-noise supply voltages. Voltage variation issues are alleviated by the LDOs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millimeter-wave (MMW) frequencies have wavelengths small enough to offer sufficient spatial resolution for certain imaging applications. Advances in silicon processes have developed devices that can operate at these frequencies, which has led to the potential for low cost MMW imaging, provided that the circuit design can meet the performance specifications for these applications. In this research, we investigate key components for an active phased array imaging system operating at 77GHz that performs purely digital beamforming. Each element in the phased array has an antenna and processor that measures the phase and amplitude of the received signal. The focus of this thesis is the quality of the phase measurement. Phase noise from the receiver's front-end circuits will degrade the spatial resolution and image integrity. The system requires a MMW phase-locked loop (PLL) to generate the local oscillator. The PLL is a significant contributor to phase noise. A MMW PLL was designed in a 0.13tm silicon-germanium BiCMOS technology for low phase noise and power consumption while maintaining enough output power to robustly drive a mixer load. Measurement results show a de-embedded single-ended output power of -2dBm, a phase noise of -8ldBc/Hz at 1MHz offset corresponding to ips of timing jitter at the carrier, and a total power dissipation of 107mW. A new technique called digital phase tightening reduces phase noise from receiver front-end circuits to allow precise phase estimation for digital beamforming. This technique leverages the large ratio between the MMW carrier frequency and the low frame rates in imaging applications. By mixing down to an intermediate frequency (IF) and then averaging over many samples, we reduce phase error caused by phase noise. A test chip demonstrating the phase tightening concept was designed and characterized. We show that we can reduce RMS error from 450ps to 1.4ps at a 175MHz IF which corresponds to reducing ips of jitter to 3fs at a 77GHz carrier.

This book was released on 2010-09-22 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasing the carrier frequency is one of the most promising solutions to deliver gigabit data rates in wireless communication systems. Applications like kiosk downloading or wireless high definition video transmission will certainly demand up to 10 Gbps in a few years. As these are highly consumer oriented applications, a low-cost implementation of the system is mandatory, which can be achieved by using planar structures with standard fabrication processes. This research focuses on exploring the relevant technologies for this next generation of millimeter-wave systems capable of multi-gigabit data rates. In millimeter-waves, interconnections play a key role: they are needed in antenna characterization and connection and system integration. Therefore, current and new interconnection structures for millimeter-waves are investigated. In particular, an efficient D band waveguide to microstrip transition for antenna measurement or interconnection is developed. An electromagnetic theory explaining its coupling mechanism is also presented. For multi-gigabit applications, very broad bandwidth antennas are needed. A planar antipodal dipole antenna for 122 GHz which features such broad bandwidth is discussed. Moreover, it was designed to be relatively insensitive to fabrication innacuracies. A transmission line model for the antenna is also presented. Several other antenna structures with different radiation patterns for a variety of applications are also addressed. It is clear from the power budget of a millimeter-wave system that moderate high gain antennas will be needed. Therefore, array structures for current "hot" applications are sketched. Focusing on a particular application, the high definition video transmission, the Quality of Service problem is addressed. This problem comes with the fact that the direct signal path might be temporarily blocked in a regular home environment. To overcome the problem, beamforming with a Rotman lens is proposed. Several antenna demonstrators for this application at 60 GHz were built. In order to correctly measure the antenna structures, a millimeter-wave antenna measurement setup was developed. It is highly flexible and delivers accurate and repeatable results. The system is useful for the measurement of antenna structures at D or V band. Finally, a whole end-to-end millimeter-wave system is discussed by the construction of a full demonstrator for 60 GHz with Quality of Service. The front end consists of transmitter and receiver and is built using off the shelf components. It is fully configurable and adaptable for the utilization of different antennas and beamforming devices, which can be very useful for channel measurement operations.
