Book excerpt: In a collision experiment involving highly energetic particles such as hadrons, processes at high momentum transfers can provide information useful for many studies involving Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). One way of analyzing these interactions is through angular distributions. In hadron-hadron collisions, the angular distribution between the two leading jets with the largest transverse momentum (pT) is affected by the production of additional jets. While soft radiation causes small differences in the azimuthal angular distribution of the two leading jets produced in a collision event, additional hard jets produced in the event have more pronounced influence on the distribution of the two leading jets produced in the collision. Thus, the dijet azimuthal angular distribution can serve as a variable that can be used to study the transition from soft to hard QCD processes in a collision event. This dissertation presents a triple-differential study involving the azimuthal angular distribution and the jet transverse momenta, and jet rapidities of the first two leading jets. The data used for this research are obtained from proton-antiproton (p$\bar{p}$) collisions occurring at a center of mass energy of 1.96TeV, using the DØ detector in Run II of the Tevatron Collider at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL) in Illinois, USA. Comparisons are made to perturbative QCD (pQCD) predictions at next-to-leading order (NLO).

The data were accumulated using the D0 detector during the 1994-1995 collider run of the Fermilab Tevatron at (square root)s = 1.8 TeV. The data are compared to two parton shower Monte Carlos (HERWIG and PYTHIA) and an analytical prediction using the leading logarithmic BFKL resummation. The final state jets as predicted by the parton showering Monte Carlos describe the data over the entire pseudorapidity range studied. The prediction based on the leading logarithmic BFKL resummation shows more decorrelation than the data as the rapidity interval increases.

The data were taken at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory during the 1992-1993 collider run with the D[null] detector using[ital p[anti p]] collisions at center-of-mass energy[radical][ital s]= 1.8 TeV. These results are compared to next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD predictions and to two leading-log approximations (LLA) where the leading terms are resummed to all orders in[alpha][sub s]. The final state jets as predicted by NLO QCD show less azimuthal decorrelation than the data. The parton showering LLA Monte Carlo HERWIG describes the data well; an analytical LLA calculation based on Balitsky-Faclin-Kuraev-Lipatov resummation predicts more decorrelation than is present in the data.

Book excerpt: A measurement of the decorrelation of azimuthal angles between the two jets with the largest transverse momenta is presented for seven regions of leading jet transverse momentum up to 2.2 TeV. The analysis is based on the proton-proton collision data collected with the CMS experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb$^{-1}$. The dijet azimuthal decorrelation is caused by the radiation of additional jets and probes the dynamics of multijet production. The results are compared to fixed-order predictions of perturbative quantum chromodynamics (QCD), and to simulations using Monte Carlo event generators that include parton showers, hadronization, and multiparton interactions. Event generators with only two outgoing high transverse momentum partons fail to describe the measurement, even when supplemented with next-to-leading-order QCD corrections and parton showers. Much better agreement is achieved when at least three outgoing partons are complemented through either next-to-leading-order predictions or parton showers. This observation emphasizes the need to improve predictions for multijet production.

Book excerpt: The decorrelation in the azimuthal angle between the most forward and the most backward jets (Mueller-Navelet jets) is measured in data collected in pp collisions with the CMS detector at the LHC at $\sqrt{s} =$ 7 TeV. The measurement is presented in the form of distributions of azimuthal-angle differences, $\Delta\phi$, between the Mueller-Navelet jets, the average cosines of $(\pi-\Delta\phi)$, $2(\pi-\Delta\phi)$, and $3(\pi-\Delta\phi)$, and ratios of these cosines. The jets are required to have transverse momenta, $p_{\mathrm{T}}$, in excess of 35 GeV and rapidities, $

Book excerpt: A measurement of dijet correlations in p-Pb collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector is presented. Jets are reconstructed from charged particles measured in the central tracking detectors and neutral energy deposited in the electromagnetic calorimeter. The transverse momentum of the full jet (clustered from charged and neutral constituents) and charged jet (clustered from charged particles only) is corrected event-by-event for the contribution of the underlying event, while corrections for underlying event fluctuations and finite detector resolution are applied on an inclusive basis. A projection of the dijet transverse momentum, kTy = pT,jetch+nesin([Delta][phi]dijet) with [Delta][phi]dijet the azimuthal angle between a full and charged jet and pT,jetch+ne the transverse momentum of the full jet, is used to study nuclear matter effects in p-Pb collisions. This observable is sensitive to the acoplanarity of dijet production and its potential modification in p-Pb collisions with respect to pp collisions. Here, measurements of the dijet kTy as a function of the transverse momentum of the full and recoil charged jet, and the event multiplicity are presented. No significant modification of kTy due to nuclear matter effects in p-Pb collisions with respect to the event multiplicity or a PYTHIA8 reference is observed.

Book excerpt: Two particle azimuthal correlation functions measured in pp and AuAu collisions at [square root of s subscript NN] = 200 GeV at midrapidity with the central arms of the PHENIX detector are analyzed in order to extract the properties of hadronic jets produced in QCD vacuum and highly excited QCD media, like the jet shape parameters j[Subscript T] and k[Subscript T], the jet conditional yields (number of associated hadrons per high p[Subscript T] trigger hadron), and the jet fragmentation function. The analysis of pp data starts with the measurement of the vacuum fragmentation function from which the p[Subscript T] dependence of the mean fragmentation momentum fraction z is extracted. We obtain a constant value of z = 0.74±0.02 for p[Subscript T] above 3 GeV/c. Soft (non-perturbative) parton fragmentation becomes significant below 3 GeV/c and the slope of the fragmentation function is p[Subscript T] dependent in this region. Gaussian fits to jet induced azimuthal correlations are employed to measure the mean jet fragmentation transverse momentum j[Subscript Ty] = 359 ± 11 (stat) ± 6 (syst) MeV/c and the mean partonic transverse momentum k[Subscript Ty] = 964 ± 49 (stat) ± 16 (syst) MeV/c. The analysis of AuAu data is based on azimuthal correlation functions between charged hadrons in the 1.5-3 GeV/c and 3-5 GeV/c p[Subscript T] regions in five classes of collision centrality. The mean jet fragmentation transverse momentum j[Subscript Ty] is centrality independent and consistent with the value in pp data mentioned above. A strong broadening with the centrality of the extracted mean partonic transverse momentum k[Subscript Ty] (multiplied by z[Subscript trigg]) is observed. This is an important finding because hadronic jet quenching through energy loss is expected to be accompanied by a broadening effect. Another important finding is that the jet conditional yields in both the near (delta phi [Difference] 0) and away (delta phi [Difference] pi) regions exhibit a slightly raising trend with centrality. This was also expected to accompany the jet quenching found at higher p[Subscript T] based on simple energy conservation considerations.

Book excerpt: This thesis describes the measurements of jet activity in the rapidity region between a dijet system formed in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The data used were collected by the ATLAS detector during 2010 at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. A number of observables that probe additional quark and gluon radiation in the dijet topology are studied. The development and performance of the monitoring system for the ATLAS calorimeter high level trigger is described. The performance of the jet calibration and a study of the properties of jets in the forward calorimeter is also given. The fraction of events that survive a veto on jets with transverse momentum above a jet veto scale, Q0, in the rapidity region between the dijet system is measured for dijets with mean transverse momentum 50

Book excerpt: Samples of inclusive [gamma] + 2 jet and [gamma] + 3 jet events collected by the D0 experiment with an integrated luminosity of about 1 fb−1 in p{bar p} collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV are used to measure cross sections as a function of the angle in the plane transverse to the beam direction between the transverse momentum (p{sub T}) of the [gamma] + leading jet system (jets are ordered in p{sub T}) and p{sub T} of the other jet for [gamma] + 2 jet, or p{sub T} sum of the two other jets for [gamma] + 3 jet events. The results are compared to different models of multiple parton interactions (MPI) in the pythia and sherpa Monte Carlo (MC) generators. The data indicate a contribution from events with double parton (DP) interactions and are well described by predictions provided by the pythia MPI models with p{sub T}-ordered showers and by sherpa with the default MPI model. The [gamma] + 2 jet data are also used to determine the fraction of events with DP interactions as a function of the azimuthal angle and as a function of the second jet p{sub T}.

Book excerpt: The Run II at the Tevatron will define a new level of precision for QCD studies in hadron collisions. Both collider experiments, CDF and D0, expect to collect up to 8 fb{sup -1} of data in this new run period. The increase in instantaneous luminosity, center-of-mass energy (from 1.8 TeV to 2 TeV) and the improved acceptance of the detectors will allow stringent tests of the Standard Model (SM) predictions in extended regions of jet transverse momentum, P{sub T}{sup jet}, and jet rapidity, Y{sup jet}. The hadronic final states in hadron-hadron collisions are characterized by the presence of soft contributions (the so-called underlying event) from initial-state gluon radiation and multiple parton interactions between remnants, in addition to the jets of hadrons originated by the hard interaction. A proper comparison with pQCD predictions at the parton level requires an adequate modeling of these soft contributions which become important at low P{sub T}{sup jet}. In this letter, a review of some of the most important QCD results from Run II is presented.
