The project was a study of structures of fluid turbulence using high-resolution direct numerical simulation and the theory development based on observations and measurements on the numerical simulations. Significant advances have been made in the study of fundamental fluid turbulence through numerical and theoretical work. The research has been focussed on the following areas: (1) The dynamics of advected passive scalar: Using the equations of motion, we analytically predict the anomalous scaling exponents for a passive scalar advected by fluid turbulence. The exponents are verified through large-scale simulation with 81922 mesh points. This is the first case in which anomalous scaling exponents for a turbulence problem have been deduced from the equations of motion. (2) The inertial range scaling in three-dimensional (3D) turbulence: High-resolution direct numerical simulations of 3D Navier-Stokes turbulence with normal viscosity and hyperviscosity are carried out to study the inertial-range statistics. It is found that both the scalings and the probability distribution functions are independent of the dissipation mechanism, but the near-dissipation-range fluctuations show significant structural differences; (3) Statistics and structures of pressure field, vorticity, and dissipation in three-dimensional incompressible isotropic turbulence have been studied. The statistical relations among pressure, vorticity, dissipation, and kinetic energy are investigated using a conditional averaging process; and (4) The refined similarity hypothesis: We studied the conditionally averaged velocity increments as a function of the locally averaged dissipation. Our results provide direct evidence in support of the refined similarity hypotheses.

Book excerpt: Turbulence is a familiar phenomenon which gives rise to complicated problems in many branches of engineering. Hinze has set forth the following definition for turbulence: "Turbulent fluid motion is an irregular condition of flow in which the various quantities show a random variation in time and space coordinates, so that statistically distinct average values can be discerned." Osborne Reynolds (1894) was the first to introduce the notion of statistical mean values into the study of turbulence. He visualized turbulent flow as the sum of mean and eddying motion. By introducing this sum of mean velocity and fluctuating velocity into the Navier-Stokes equations and with the aid of the continuity equation, he derived equations giving relationships between the various components of the fluctuating velocity. It was soon realized that before any further results could be obtained from a theoretical analysis of Reynold0́9s equations of motion, a mechanism had to be postulated for the interaction of fluctuating velocity components at different points in the turbulent field. Consequently, three decades after Reynold's: work, phenomenological theories of turbulence, such as the momentum-transfer theory of Prandtl (1926), the vorticity transport theory of Taylor (1932) and the similarity theory of Karman (1930) were introduced. Not only are they based on unrealistic physical models, but they do not furnish any information beyond temporal-mean velocity distribution. A complete theory of turbulence should describe the mechanism of production of turbulence, its convection, diffusion, distribution, and eventual dissipation for any given boundary conditions.

Book excerpt: In 1976 a similar titled IUTAM Symposium (Structure of Turbulence and Drag Reduction) was held in Washington . However, the progress made during the last thirteen years as weil as the much promising current research desired a second one this year. In Washington drag reduction by additives and by direct manipulation of the walls (compliant walls and heated surfaces) were discussed. In the meantime it became evident that drag reduction also occurs when turbulence is influenced by geometrical means, e.g. by influencing the pressure distribution by the shape of the body (airfoils) or by the introduction of streamwise perturbances on a body (riblets). In the recent years turbulence research has seen increasing attention being focused on the investigation of coherent structures, mainly in Newtonian fluids. We all know that these structures are a significant feature of turbulent flows, playing an important role in the energy balance in such flows. However their place in turbulence theories as weil as the factors influencing their development are still poorly understood. Consequently, the investigation of phenomena in which the properties of coherent structures are alte red provides a promising means of improving our understanding of turbulent flows in general.

Book excerpt: Liutex and Its Applications in Turbulence Research reviews the history of vortex definition, provides an accurate mathematical definition of vortices, and explains their applications in flow transition, turbulent flow, flow control, and turbulent flow experiments. The book explains the term "Rortex" as a mathematically defined rigid rotation of fluids or vortex, which could help solve many longstanding problems in turbulence research. The accurate mathematical definition of the vortex is important in a range of industrial contexts, including aerospace, turbine machinery, combustion, and electronic cooling systems, so there are many areas of research that can benefit from the innovations described here. This book provides a thorough survey of the latest research in generalized and flow-thermal, unified, law-of-the-wall for wall-bounded turbulence. Important theory and methodologies used for developing these laws are described in detail, including: the classification of the conventional turbulent boundary layer concept based on proper velocity scaling; the methodology for identification of the scales of velocity, temperature, and length needed to establish the law; and the discovery, proof, and strict validations of the laws, with both Reynolds and Prandtl number independency properties using DNS data. The establishment of these statistical laws is important to modern fluid mechanics and heat transfer research, and greatly expands our understanding of wall-bounded turbulence. Lumley, on the occasion of his 60th birthday, in recognition of his enormous impact on the advancement of turbulence research. A variety of experimental, computational and theoretical topics, including turbulence modeling, direct numerical simulations, compressible turbulence, turbulent shear flows, coherent structures and the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition are contained herein. The diversity and scope of these contributions are further acknowledgment of John Lumley's wide ranging influence in the field of turbulence. The large number of contributions by the authors, many of whom were participants in The Lumley Symposium: Recent Developments in Turbulence (held at ICASE, NASA Langley Research Center on November 12 & 13, 1990), has presented us with the unique opportu nity to select a few numerical and theoretical papers for inclusion in the journal Theoretical and Computational Fluid Dynamics for which Professor Lumley serves as Editor. Extended Abstracts of these pa pers are included in this volume and are appropriately marked. The special issue of TCFD will appear this year and will serve as an additional tribute to John Lumley. As is usually the case, the efforts of others have significantly eased our tasks. We would like to express our deep appreciation to Drs. R.
