Numerous experimental anatomic and electrophysiologic studies have been undertaken, and much new information has been brought forward. Many apparently discordant observations have been reported however, and on many points the data obtained by the use of different methbds and approaches appear to be diffi cult to reconcile. Much of the interest in the olivocerebellar projection concerns the topographical localization within the projection. Particularly as a result of research in recent years the pattern of localization has turned out to be far more complex than previously be lieved. It was found useful, therefore, to attempt a review of the subject in the hope that a critical analysis of available observations might make it possible to obtain an integrated picture of the olivocerebellar projection and perhaps fmd some basic principles in the organization of this fiber system. As will be seen, our attempt has been only partly successful. There are still riddles that remain to be solved. In the present review attention will be focused on problems related to the locali zation within the olivocerebellar projection, particularly its anatomic aspects. An extensive review of the physiology of the inferior olive has been published recently by Armstrong (1974), who considers some anatomicophysiologic correlations as well. Physiologic fmdings will be referred to here mainly in relation to our main theme.

Book excerpt: Recently, the role of the olivocerebellar projection in cerebellar operation has drawn the attention of many scientists who are trying to understand how the cerebellum controls movements. The papers published in this book were presented at a meeting held in Turin on August 9-12, 1987 as a satellite symposium of the 2nd World IBRO Congress in Budapest. It was planned in collaboration with Rodolfo Llinas and Masao Ito, although the latter was not able to attend. Some of the papers are in the form of reviews, others are short communications of new unpublished results. All aspects of research on the inferior olive are covered including morphology, neurotransmission, development, and electrophysiology, as well as its relation to behaviour and to human pathology. The lively, endless scientific discussions have not been published, but the reader may well imagine them from the different and sometimes contrasting pOints of views expressed in the papers. There are many examples showing that integrity of the inferior olive is necessary for some forms of motor learning and for the adaptive capabilities ofthe motor system. On the other hand, there is evidence that the inferior olive is important in controlling the dynamic characteristics of movement, both as a phasic and as a tonic operator. From this, two main viewpoints have emerged. The "plasticitists" attribute the role of inducing plastic changes to the synapse between the climbing fibre and the Purkinje cell.

Studies of the cerebellum are now a central focus in neuroscience. During the last four decades, many laboratories worldwide have dedicated their research activities to understanding the roles of the cerebellum in motor control, cognitive processes and biology of mental processes, behavioral symptoms, and emotion. It is now accepted that the cerebellum acts as a cognitive operator in learning, perception, and attention. Moreover, major improvements in our assessment of in vivo cerebellar architecture using imaging techniques have occurred. A typical example is the accurate description of cerebellar anatomy during fetal development with MRI, a progress which has direct impacts on patient care. These advances have been associated with discoveries of new clinical disorders, in particular in the field of genetic ataxias. More than 20 new genes have been identified these last 10 years. Only for dominant ataxias, more than 30 diseases have now been unravelled. The number of ataxic disorders will increase with aging, the cerebellum being the structure of the brain with the most important loss of neurons with age. More than 300 different cerebellar disorders are encountered during daily practice, but we are missing a single source of information explaining their pathogenesis. Despite the immense amount of knowledge acquired about the cerebellar circuitry these last years, a large book covering the neuroscience of the cerebellum is missing. The goal of this endeavour is to bring up to date information relevant for basic science and also for clinical activities. To reach this goal, the most renowned authors are gathered in a unique and in-depth book with a format of a handbook. We emphasize the connections between molecular findings, imaging features, behavioural/neuropsychological aspects, and clinical implications.

These chapters represent important aspects of the morphology, development, and function of the cerebellum and related structures. Clearly an exhaustive analysis of all aspects of the cerebellar system, as they relate to the legacy of Ramon y Cajal, would be impossible to contain in just one volume, given its far-reaching impact. Instead, we deliberately steered away from the traditional handbook approach that some of us have taken in the past and selected those aspects of cerebellar research currently under vigorous study that would also represent the widest scope of interest for neuroscientists in general and for cerebellar specialists in particular. In particular, we felt that as the discrete anatomy of the cerebellum is quite well known, only certain aspects of the structure should be discussed here. For example, the organization of the pontocerebellar pathways, we felt, would be particularly interesting given the enormity of the system in higher vertebrates. Also of interest is the distribution and development of the synaptology and neurotransmitter properties in this cortex. Indeed, from the point of view of cerebellar development, this may represent one of the clearest paradigms in the understanding of rules for neurogenesis for the central nervous system.
