Book Synopsis Pharmacology of Intestinal Permeation I by :
Download or read book Pharmacology of Intestinal Permeation I written by and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 719 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intestine, particularly the small bowel, represents a large surface (in the adult 2 human approximately 200m ) through which the body is exposed to its environment. A vigorous substrate exchange takes place across this large surface: nutrients and xenobiotics are absorbed from the lumen into the bloodstream or the lymph, and simultaneously, the same types of substrate pass back into the lumen. The luminal surface of the intestine is lined with a "leaky" epithelium, thus the passage of the substrates, in either direction, proceeds via both transcellular and intercellular routes. Simple and carrier-mediated diffusion, active transport, pinocytosis, phagocytosis and persorption are all involved in this passage across the intestinal wall. The term "intestinal permeation" refers to the process of passage of various substances across the gut wall, either from the lumen into the blood or lymph, or in the opposite direction. "Permeability" is the condition of the gut which governs the rate of this complex two-way passage. The pharmacologist's interest in the problem of intestinal permeation is twofold: on the one hand, this process determines thebioavailability of drugs and contributes significantly to the pharmacokinetics and toxicokinetics of xeno biotics; on the other hand, the pharmacodynamic effects of many drugs are manifested in a significant alteration of the physiological process of intestinal permeation.

Book excerpt: This book provides an authoritative and comprehensive source of information on the biochemical an metabolic aspects of digestion and absorption of different dietary fats and other lipids, with minimal discussion of the physical chemistry of the process, which has been covered in great detail in previous reviews. It is intended for both researchers and practitioners in the biomedical field who require detailed knowledge of the biomedical and metabolic transformations involed in the intestinal digestion and resynthesis of dietary fats and other lipids.
Book Synopsis Nutrition and Drug Interrelations by : John Hathcock
Download or read book Nutrition and Drug Interrelations written by John Hathcock and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 950 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nutrition and Drug Interrelations examines and presents the different relations of nutrition, metabolism, and effects of drugs, including drugs' positive effects in the field of animal husbandry and human and veterinary medicine. This book also highlights the importance of the interrelations between nutrition and drugs. The introductory chapter gives an overview of the variable role of food in humans on a historical and sociological context and perspective. The first section of this book deals with the impacts of drugs on the nutrition process. These impacts can either be harmless or harmful depending on the adequacy of nutrition. The second section of this book describes some of the many influences of nutritional condition on biochemical competence to cope with xenobiotics, including drugs. The third section highlights the various uses of pharmacological agents in food production. This section also discusses some concerns about the effect in the food chain of pharmacological agents. The last section in this book demonstrates the overlap in boundary between dietetic and pharmacological treatments. Given focus is the use of vitamin D derivatives and megavitamin treatments with doubtful benefits. This book will benefit most students and professionals in the field of food and nutrition, human and veterinary medicine, and animal husbandry. The subject area in this book will also yield interest from people involved in metabolism, nutrition, and pharmacology.
Book Synopsis The Importance of Vitamins to Human Health by : J.A. Taylor
Download or read book The Importance of Vitamins to Human Health written by J.A. Taylor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kellogg Company ranks among the world's leading food manufacturers, and it follows, therefore, that our corporate policies are important to human health. Indeed food manufacturers, as a combined industrial force, must bear a major responsibility for the health of mankind because commercially processed foods are increasingly an indispensable part of the mosaic of human nutrition. This is particularly true in advanced industrialised societies. Here, in Great Britain, 40% ofthe people live in major conurbations and 41 % of the food they eat is either pre-cooked or preserved, compounded or frozen, dehydrated or concentrated, or modified in some other way to satisfy a consumer need or preference. These preferences are communicated to the manufacturer through the competitive forces of the market, and are then translated into products in their most attractive and saleable form. However, it is questionable how far consumer choice, depending largely on sight and taste, can be relied upon to ensure a correctly balanced and nutritionally adequate diet. The probable answer is that if we all relied, solely, on our senses and our appetites, many of us would be suffering from some form of nutritional imbalance. A serious nutritional responsibility therefore rests with the modern food manufacturer. We, at Kellogg's, are conscious of the need, not only to make the foods we produce attractive to the purse and palate, but to ensure that they make a sound contribution in nutritional terms.

Book Synopsis Lipid Absorption: Biochemical and Clinical Aspects by : K. Rommel
Download or read book Lipid Absorption: Biochemical and Clinical Aspects written by K. Rommel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May 1975 more than 50 scientists - research workers and clinician- from 12 countries spent three days at Titisee in the Black Forest discussing problems relating to lipid absorption and ways of promoting closer liaison in the field. In this book all the papers presented at this symposium are published in full, together with the ensuing discussions. We should all like to thank Dr Falk for his generous sponsorship of this meeting which enabled us to work in such a charming atmosphere. We should also like to thank the authors and the other participants for the rapid preparation and correction of their manuscripts, and the publishers for their cooperation and assistance in preparing this book. We believe it repre sents a wide-ranging survey of existing knowledge of lipid absorption which will, we trust, provide a real stimulus for further research and new ideas in the study of this subject.
