Book excerpt: Part Seven in the Fishes of the Western North Atlantic series describes the neosopelids (2 genera, 4 species) and lanternfishes (20 genera, 82 species), with an account of Atlantic mesopelagic zoogeography that serves as a model for predicting occurrences of many ocean animals. There are accounts of 86 species in 2 families and 22 genera of bony fishes, among the most abundant of deep oceanic waters, and prime species for the study of oceanic zoogeography and for monitoring and assessment of the oceans. Specialist authorships of its sections include detailed species descriptions with keys, life history and general habits, abundance, range, and relation to human activity, such as economic and sporting importance. Book Synopsis Large-scale Experimental Test of Copper Sulfate as a Control for the Florida Red Tide by : George Armytage Rounsefell
Download or read book Large-scale Experimental Test of Copper Sulfate as a Control for the Florida Red Tide written by George Armytage Rounsefell and published by . This book was released on 1958 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first large-scale attempt at controlling the red tide was made in the autumn of 1957. About 16 square miles stretching along 32 miles of shoreline from Anclote Key to Pass-a-grille Beach, off St. Petersburg, Florida, were dusted with copper sulfate (CuSO4·5H2O) at about 20 pounds to the acre by crop-dusting planes. The copper very quickly reduced G̲y̲m̲ṉo̲ḏi̲ṉi̲u̲m̲ ḇṟe̲v̲e̲, the red tide organisms, from several million to practically none per liter relieving the area of the respiratory irritation caused by the airborne toxin of G̲. ḇṟe̲v̲e̲. In 2 out of 5 areas the organisms rose again to concentrations lethal to fish in 10 to 14 days after dusting. This method is not recommended for general control, but will give temporary relief in local situations from the airborne toxin

Book Synopsis Identification guide to the mesopelagic fishes of the western Indian Ocean by : Mostarda, E., Harold, A.S., Sutton, T.T., Hulley, P.A.
Download or read book Identification guide to the mesopelagic fishes of the western Indian Ocean written by Mostarda, E., Harold, A.S., Sutton, T.T., Hulley, P.A. and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2023-10-17 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive guide encompasses a total of 473 species of mesopelagic fishes (i.e. those fishes residing primarily between 200 and 1 000 m depth during daytime) that are known to occur in the western Indian Ocean. It aids in their accurate identification, offering dichotomous keys to all taxa. Species are treated in detail, with accounts including the scientific name, FAO common name in English (where available), other useful characters, size, a distribution map, and one or more illustrations. Captions and arrows enhance user-friendliness for to both specialists and non-specialists in the field of ichthyology. In the broader context of marine ecology, mesopelagic fishes hold a pivotal role as integral components of the marine food web, serving both as predators and prey for various species. This guide not only enriches our understanding of these fishes but also contributes to our knowledge of the western Indian Ocean's diverse ecosystem. Beyond species identification, it sheds light on the interconnectedness of marine life and underscores the importance of conservation efforts in safeguarding this delicate balance. This guide serves as an invaluable resource for in-depth exploration and research into these remarkable fishes, offering a comprehensive tool for studying their diverse characteristics, behaviours, and ecological significance, essential elements for sustainable management and conservation practices.
