Book excerpt: The authors trace the evolution of the taxi from the early horse-drawn European vehicles to the futuristic paratransit" vehicles of today, relating the development of mass transit to the taxi and showing how both forms of transportation changed in response to alterations in city and urban life. They discuss the economics, innovative services, and future of the taxi and maintain that this service has the potential to alleviate some of the current problems of urban transportation." Book excerpt: The vehicle for hire (VFH) market – broadly comprising taxis, limousines, and app-based transport – has faced multiple and significant changes over the years, with the period since 2010 a time of major upheaval. This book documents the development of the market over time, examining its regulation and control structures, exploring its history, trends, and market theories, and discussing how these are both promoted and challenged by the changes affecting the sector. This book reviews recent developments in the VFH industry, from the influx of new market entrants and the emergence of app-based services to their widespread use, comparing international markets and their regulation, and draws on a series of case studies in key locations in North America, Europe, and Asia. It establishes and details economic, market, social, and political theory affecting the VFH industry and devotes its second half to the definition and emergence of transport typologies and markets in which the sector has a role (or potential role). The book concludes, from a neutral standpoint, on the balance between market participants, addressing the immediate future facing the industry, including the impacts of Covid and other external factors. It considers the short- and long-term effects of market change, the role played by regulators, and the market conditions imposed upon them. Written for industry practitioners – both suppliers and regulators – as well as the academic community, this book will inform the community and prompt further analysis of a significant and growing field in transportation.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, grade: 17,0 (=1,3 in Deutschland), Católica Lisbon School of Business & Economics, language: English, abstract: This report investigates the effects and influence of Uber’s market entry in the greater Lisbon area. More specifically, the study evaluates the resulting impact on “Generation Y”’s perception of traditional taxi services. Based on the findings of the research, the report suggests concrete managerial implications to the traditional taxi industry. The overall research was designed to derive insights based on both, qualitative and quantitative approaches. The qualitative research was performed with two focus groups and created the foundation for the quantitative research, which was executed using an extensive online questionnaire with 94 participants. Both approaches targeted respondents classified as “Generation Y”. Core findings include the most significant attributes to evaluate traditional taxi services. Most importantly, the price, the friendliness of the driver and security were highlighted. Moreover, the overall satisfaction of customers is further determined by attributes such as availability, comfort and payment process. It must be considered however, that taxi services are rated significantly different among Uber users and non Uber users. As the former have ranked taxi services significantly worse than non Uber users, it can be concluded that the recent market entry of Uber influences and changes “Generation Y”’s perception of traditional taxis. The complementing finding that Uber services have been evaluated significantly more positive among the all respondents impressively emphasizes the thread for traditional taxis in the greater Lisbon area. The emerging competitor Uber is perceived as superior, even among the non Uber users. Both, the qualitative and quantitative analysis revealed that the traditional taxi industry currently faces major problems related to the lack of trust, transparency and security of the services, as well as the limited options of payment methods. For the time being, this leaves the services’ availability as the only competitive advantage of the traditional taxi industry. In order to secure its competitiveness in any market scenario, it can be concluded that the industry needs to adapt its core services with regards to multiple service features. With a focus on “Generation Y”, the taxi industry must introduce tools and mechanisms to enhance and control transparency, foster the acceptance of credit cards as a payment method and ultimately drop prices to a perceived fair and competitive level.

Book excerpt: This Round Table examined the basic case for liberalisation of the taxi industry, and reviewed experiences with taxi (de-)regulation in OECD and ECMT member countries. There are a number of aspects to regulation of the taxi industry: regulation of entry into the industry, price regulation and service quality regulation. The discussions of these aspects concluded that little empirical evidence supported the argument that entry restrictions improved capacity utilisation. On the contrary, the case could be made that increased entry and associated economies of density, as well as shorter passenger waiting times, warranted subsidies for entry. The need for price regulation depends on the type and structure of the taxi market. Consumers face search and switching costs when they require taxi services, which gives taxi operators considerable price-setting power. The abuse of that market power is greater in unfamiliar geographic environments and in the cruising market. In markets dominated by dispatch centres, firms may earn a reputation for high or low service prices, which opens up the possibility of some price competition. A similar argument applies to service quality. The more anonymous the market, the greater the need for regulation. Again, dispatch centres enhance the self-regulatory role of competition for repeat customer relations by building a good reputation. Experiences with deregulating the taxi industry have had mixed results. Where the taxi industry has been liberalised, there has generally been massive entry, leading to consumer benefits in the form of shorter waiting times. Background papers were presented by Catherine Liston-Heyes from Holloway University, London, Jon-Terje Bekken from the TOI, Norway, Peter Bakker from the AVV, The Netherlands and Denis Cartier, from the Quebec Ministry of Transport, Canada.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uber's April 2016 launch in Buenos Aires plunged the Argentine capital into a frenzied hysteria that engulfed courts of law, taxi drivers, bureaucrats, the press, the general public, and Argentina's president himself. Economist and anthropologist Juan M. del Nido, who had arrived in the city six months earlier to research the taxi industry, suddenly found himself documenting the unprecedented upheaval in real time. Taxis vs. Uber examines the ensuing conflict from the perspective of the city's globalist, culturally liberal middle class, showing how notions like monopoly, efficiency, innovation, competition, and freedom fueled claims that were often exaggerated, inconsistent, unverifiable, or plainly false, but that shaped the experience of the conflict such that taxi drivers' stakes in it were no longer merely disputed but progressively written off, pathologized, and explained away. This first book-length study of the lead-up to and immediate aftermath of the arrival of a major platform economy to a metropolitan capital considers how the clash between Uber and the traditional taxi industry played out in courtrooms, in the press, and on the street. Looking to court cases, the politics of taxi licenses, social media campaigns, telecommunications infrastructure, public protests, and Uber's own promotional materials, del Nido examines the emergence of "post-political reasoning": an increasingly common way in which societies neutralize disagreement, shaping how we understand what we can even legitimately argue about and how.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis further highlights how regulations arise in the policy-making process; and to what extend they stem from either anti-competitive interests between established firms, a lack of information among policymakers, or simply planners' failure to integrate taxis into a more comprehensive regional transportation system. Ultimately this thesis argues that some of Iowa City's taxicab regulations, particularly the liability insurance minimums for drivers, the terms of operation for dispatching, and the profiling of immigrant and small firm cabbies by ICPD are burdensome and unnecessary. Loosening of these restrictions would benefit small firm and drivers, the general consumer of taxi services, and compliment larger city planning goals in Iowa City, Iowa. Despite the costs and burdens, this thesis does not justify complete deregulation for Iowa City's transportation policy, particularly when case studies of such efforts have not always yielded positive benefits. Instead, this thesis advocates for "better regulation", to be enforced on a regional level, rather than at a municipal level.
