The theory predicted the shear strength of the beams in the present study well. When beams from previous investigations were included, the theory also gave good prediction of the shear strength. Apart from this, comparisons of shear strength were also made with the predictions by the shear design provisions contained in the Australian Standard AS 3600 (1994), American Concrete Institute Building Code ACI 318-95, Eurocode EC2 Part 1 and Canadian Standard CSA A23.3-94. The AS 3600 method was found to give the best correlation with the test results among all the code methods.

Book excerpt: Since the beginning of the 20th century, concrete has become the most used construction material. The world production of cement in 2007 was about 2.6 billion tons, compared to just 10 million tons in 1990. Traditionally, concrete was understood as a mixture of cement, water and aggregate but in modern concrete other constituents may also be present such as mineral components, chemical admixtures and fibres. Normal and high strength concretes were developed in the early 1900s and 1950s, respectively, whereas the development of ultra-high- performance concrete known as reactive powder concrete (RPC) was originated in the mid 1990s. RPC is an ultra-high strength cementitious material that contains a high quantity of cement and silica fume, low quantity of water, incorporates large amounts of fibres and exhibits remarkable ductility, durability and strength properties. In this book, the mechanical behaviour of steel fibre reinforced RPC girders is detailed and design models presented. Particular emphasis is placed on non-flexural actions such as shear and bursting where steel fibres are used to replace conventional steel reinforcing bars.

Book excerpt: Selected chapters from the German concrete yearbook are now being published in the new English "Beton-Kalender Series" for the benefit of an international audience. Since it was founded in 1906, the Ernst & Sohn "Beton-Kalender" has been supporting developments in reinforced and prestressed concrete. The aim was to publish a yearbook to reflect progress in "ferro-concrete" structures until - as the book's first editor, Fritz von Emperger (1862-1942), expressed it - the "tempestuous development" in this form of construction came to an end. However, the "Beton-Kalender" quickly became the chosen work of reference for civil and structural engineers, and apart from the years 1945-1950 has been published annually ever since. Ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) is a milestone in concrete technology and application. It permits the construction of both more slender and more durable concrete structures with a prolonged service life and thus improved sustainability. This book is a comprehensive overview of UHPC - from the principles behind its production and its mechanical properties to design and detailing aspects. The focus is on the material behaviour of steel fibre-reinforced UHPC. Numerical modelling and detailing of the connections with reinforced concrete elements are featured as well. Numerous examples worldwide - bridges, columns, facades and roofs - are the basis for additional explanations about the benefits of UHPC and how it helps to realise several architectural requirements. The authors are extensively involved in the testing, design, construction and monitoring of UHPC structures. What they provide here is therefore a unique synopsis of the state of the art with a view to practical applications.

Additionally, this research will also investigate the tensile properties of UHPC to assist in determining the relevant shear properties. Two series of specimens were created for testing: small-scale beam specimens for load-displacement behavior analysis under four-point bending and UHPC prisms for determining the effects of tension stiffening. Both sets of specimens were created using ASTM Grade 60 steel and high strength steel for the primary reinforcement. Finally, numerical analyses using finite element analysis software, based on both continuum and macroelement models, of the UHPC specimens were carried out based on the modified compression field theory (MCFT) to verify and expand upon the experimental results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this research is to study the feasibility of using high performance steel as shear reinforcement for concrete beams. High performance steel is characterized by enhanced corrosion resistance and higher strength in comparison to conventional Grade 60 steel reinforcement. Advantages of using higher strength steel include the ability to design for longer span lengths and/or reducing the amount of material needed for design. This could greatly reduce the overall costs of construction for future structures. Nine reinforced concrete beams were constructed using No. 9 longitudinal bars and No. 3 bars for the stirrups. The main variables considered in the study are the stirrup spacing and the type of reinforcing steel material. Testing was performed using a single concentrated load positioned closer to one end of the beam, which allowed for two tests per beam. Research findings indicate that using MMFX stirrups increases the overall shear strength and enhances serviceability by distributing cracks and reducing crack width. Pairing high performance longitudinal and transverse reinforcement shows an optimum design in terms of strength gain and reduction in crack width. Enhanced serviceability behavior can be attributed to the better bond characteristics of MMFX steel in comparison to conventional Grade 60 steel. Test results suggest that combining high performance steel with high strength concrete could lead to a better utilization of the materials. Analysis shows that the ACI 318-05, CSA, and AASHTO LRFD design codes can conservatively be used for the design of high performance steel up to a yield strength of 80 ksi. Detailed analysis using the Modified Compression Field Theory can be used to accurately predict the behavior of the beams.

Book excerpt: Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) is a relatively new type of concrete that exhibits mechanical properties that are far superior to those of conventional concrete and in some cases rival those of steel. The main characteristics that distinguish UHPC from conventional reinforced concrete are its very high compressive strength (20 to 33 ksi), the addition of steel fibers which enables tension to be carried across open cracks without conventional reinforcing steel, and a very high resistance to corrosion and degradation. The mechanical properties of UHPC allow for smaller, thinner sections as compared to conventional reinforced concrete sections. However, as it is a new material, the use of UHPC has been limited to a few structural applications due primarily to the high cost of the material and the lack of established design guidelines. In previous research, a material model based on physical tests was used in conjunction with finite element models to develop an optimized cross-section for a prestressed UHPC girder for bridge applications. The cross-section is a double-tee with bulbs at the bottoms of the webs to accommodate the prestressing strands. As it is envisioned in bridge applications, the double-tees will be placed directly adjacent to one another, and the top flange will act as the riding surface after a thin asphalt overlay is placed. Based on the longitudinal compressive stresses, the top flange of the girder can be quite thin. However, there exists the possibility that a punching shear failure could occur from the application of a point load such as a wheel patch load if the flange is made too thin. The research reported herein was initiated to characterize the punching shear capacity of thin UHPC plates and to develop recommendations on the minimum top flange thickness for the optimized double-tee. Twelve small slabs (45 in x 45 in) were tested to failure to characterize the punching shear strength of UHPC. The variables considered were the slab thickness (2, 2.5, and 3 in) and loading plate dimensions (from 1 in x 1 in to 3 in x 3 in). The results of the testing were compared to several existing models for punching shear. The two equations that predicted strengths most reliably were the current ACI punching shear equation and a modified bolt pull-out equation. After evaluation of the test results, the minimum slab thickness required to prevent a punching shear failure in the top flange due to an 8 in x 20 in wheel patch was determined to be 1 in. Three larger slabs were also tested. These slabs had the same clear span length as the top flange of the optimized double-tee and were loaded with a wheel patch load. The slabs were all approximately 3 in thick and all failed in flexure rather than punching shear. It was concluded that the casting method has a strong influence on the orientation of the steel fibers, which in turn influences the flexural strength in orthogonal directions in the slab. The top flange thickness will be governed by transverse bending rather than punching shear, and the 3 in slabs were not able to support the full wheel load plus impact and load factor. The results of this research help in the continued optimization of a UHPC shape for use in highway bridges. If material use in the girder is minimized, UHPC bridges can become economically competitive with HPC bridges, but offer the benefits of more rapid construction and better durability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) is a cementitious concrete with reinforcing fibers that has exceptionally high compressive, tensile, flexural, and bond strengths, but not much is known about its shear strength. It is typically composed of cementitious material, fine sand, steel fiber reinforcement, admixtures, and water. The inclusion of steel fiber reinforcement and admixtures lead to higher costs than conventional concrete. Due to its high cost, UHPC applications in the United States have been associated with connections, in which its high strength is advantageous and the quantities are small enough to make it cost-effective. Proprietary UHPC mixes have been developed by private companies for use on large-scale projects, but these mixes are not always an option due to high cost. In an effort to make UHPC more accessible, proprietary mixes using local materials and varying percentages of fiber content have been developed. An experimental program was undertaken by the University of Washington, in collaboration with the University of Oklahoma (OU) and Florida International University (FIU), to study one such mix. Seven batches of UHPC were mixed and cast at UW, altering the material sourcing and fiber content. In total, five batches used UW materials and 2% fiber content, 1 batch used UW materials and 1% fiber content, and one batch used OU materials and 2% fiber content. Each batch of UHPC was subject to compression, modulus of elasticity, direct tension, and flexural beam tests. Additionally, they were tested in pure shear using the UW Panel Element Tester. After testing, the experimental data was analyzed to determine the effect of material sourcing and fiber content on UHPC behavior. It was concluded that the effect from material sourcing was negligible, at least partly because critical materials such as fibers and admixtures were obtained nationally and so were unchanged, and the effect from fiber content was little on compression and modulus of elasticity, but large on tension, flexural, and shear. The results were then compared to compression, modulus of elasticity, direct tension, and flexural beam test results from OU that used the same mix design but sourced materials locally and used different mixing equipment and mixing procedures. The conclusions from this comparison were consistent with the initial analysis. Finally, the UW test results were compared with strengths predicted by available equations. However, no such equations exist for UHPC panels tested in pure shear. Therefore, the shear test results were compared with mix parameters such as fiber content, compressive strength, and tensile strength. It was found that the results were best correlated with fiber content and tensile strength. Equations based on these correlations were proposed to estimate shear strength of UHPC.

Nowadays, with continued development of science and technology, a new generation of concretes is produced and is termed high performance concretes. A review of previously published work indicates that very few studies (in some cases none) have addressed the structural behavior of full-scale, high performance concrete elements. This study investigated the shear and fracture behavior of two types of high performance concrete - high-volume fly ash concrete (HVFAC) and self-consolidating concrete (SCC). The HVFAC incorporates up to 70% cement replacement with fly ash, and the SCC is based on using only chemical admixtures to convert a conventional concrete (CC) mix to a SCC mix with all of the necessary passing, filling, flowability, and stability requirements typically found in SCC. This experimental program consisted of 16 shear beams (12 without shear reinforcing and four with shear reinforcing in the form of stirrups) and also 16 fracture mechanics beams for each type of concrete investigated (HVFAC and SCC). Additionally, three different longitudinal reinforcement ratios were evaluated within the test matrix of shear beams. The shear beams were tested under a simply supported four-point loading condition. Results of this study showed that the HVFAC had higher shear strength and fracture energy compared with the CC, while the SCC showed higher fracture energy, but the same shear strength as the CC"--Abstract, page iv.
