Book Synopsis The Mouse in Biomedical Research by : Henry Foster
Download or read book The Mouse in Biomedical Research written by Henry Foster and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1981-01-01 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mouse in Biomedical Research, Volume I: History, Genetics, and Wild Mice focuses on the utility of the mouse as a laboratory animal in biomedical research. A historical perspective on the development and origins of the laboratory and wild mouse is given. The diversity of inbred strains of mice as well as the methods of developing and the genetic monitoring and testing of these strains are discussed. This volume consists of 14 chapters and begins with an overview of mice of the genus Mus and problems concerning evolution within the genus. The following chapters focus on taxonomy, nomenclature, and breeding systems, together with recombinant inbred and congenic resistant mouse strains. Methods of constructing, testing, and monitoring strains are described. Congenic strains, gene mapping, cytogenetics, and murine experimental studies are also considered, along with the histocompatibility-2 complex and radiation genetics. The final chapter is devoted to the pharmacogenetics of the laboratory mouse, paying particular attention to intoxication and detoxication pathways, genetically determined differences in xenobiotic metabolism, and pharmacogenetic polymorphisms. This book will be a useful reference for investigators using mice in many areas of research.

This book was released on 2010-11-18 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this work is summarize the contribution that insertional mutagenesis has made to our understanding of cancer. A variety of insertional mutagens are presented that have been used to study a variety of tumor types in several model organisms. In addition, the impact of insertional mutagenesis in several gene therapy trials is discussed along with strategies to avoid such complications in future clinical trials.

Book excerpt: approaches to the experimental problems that still face us in understanding this most fascinating of organs. Too many people contributed to the completion of this volume to allow acknowledg ment of all the individual efforts, but we particularly thank the reviewers whose input into the editorial process was invaluable and the authors of these chapters who revised their text, sometimes more than once, to bring it to the high standards set by the Editors. The Com mittee gratefully acknowledges the support ofVysis, Inc. , in the publication of a color figure in Chapter 19, by S. Weber-Hall and Trevor Dale. Finally, we wish to express our heartfelt appreciation to Margot Ip and Bonnie Asch, who worked long and hard to bring this volume to fruition. Margaret C. Neville for the Committee on Mammary Gland Biology Preface One of the most exciting and beneficial developments in research on mammary gland biology and breast cancer has been the influx of increased funding to support this work. This influx, which has been due primarily to the tireless efforts of breast cancer activists to gamer addi tional money from various federal and state sources, has led to a rapid expansion of research efforts by attracting numerous new investigators into the field. These new investigators include students, postdoctoral fellows, and scientists from other fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impact of basic research on oncology has been particularly impressive in the recent search for the cause of malignancy. Equally impressive is our appreciation of the cause of tumors based on observation. Even in the earliest era of the study of infectious diseases, it was proposed that tumorous growth in animals and birds resulted from "minute" infectious particles. Experiments then supported the hypothesis, that the etiologic agent in many animal tumors was viral. The development of molecular biology, supported by technical advances and conceptual understanding of macromolecular action, led to an explosive increase in studies of animal oncogenic viruses. For a decade, new findings emerged from research laboratories revealing the enormous variety of such agents, the complex ity of their interactions with cells, and the tantalizingly possible mechanisms by which they might cause malignant transformation of the cell. Repeatedly, clues emerged which suggested the intervention of viral agents in human tumors. A breathless excitement pervaded both the scientific and public communities as highly publicized findings rapidly followed one another. The excitement was no less scientific than it was practical, for implicit in the concept of the viral oncogen is the possibility of specific virostatic or virotoxic agents or of immunization.

Book excerpt: This richly-illustrated atlas-like book provides a foundation for the biological and molecular understanding of how the mammary gland develops and how breast cancer originates. The main goal is to comprehensively review in ten chapters fundamental knowledge in breast cancer. New paradigms are described in which induction of differentiation in the mammary gland can promote prevention and cure of breast cancer. The text is extremely helpful both for clinicians treating patients and researchers looking for new avenues of development.
