This book was released on 2011-10-06 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influence of Bernard Dussart's contributions to limnology in general as well as to freshwater copepodology in particular can hardly be overestimated. From 1945 until his decease late 2008, he has devoted more than 60 years of his life to studying freshwater bodies and their inhabitants. Next to his 200+ scientific papers, his frequent travels brought him all over the world, where he invariably left an inheritage of enhanced interest in problems of freshwater biology and management. The contributions in this book show the progress of research on the Copepoda found in continental waters and in part continue along the lines B. Dussart has set out: a worthy tribute to one of the very nestors of copepodology of fresh waters.

Book excerpt: Copepods, or more commonly referred to as the insects of the sea, have successfully colonised every aquatic environment, equating insects in terms of absolute and relative success. They represent up to 90-97% of the marine zooplankton biomass, but may also be conspicuous in freshwater systems. Copepods are the linchpin of aquatic foodwebs; they prey upon phytoplankton while simultaneously acting as a staple food for higher trophic level organisms, contribute to the vertical fluxes of carbon and sustain recycled production through the excretion of ammonia. Copepods can also signal possible climate change and are indicators of the effects of ocean acidification. They are also used as model animals for ecotoxicological and molecular studies, and might be adopted as control agents of disease vectors. Current studies are rapidly exploring multiple lines of research with an intended purpose to provide an up-to-date snapshot of some hot topics in the study of the distribution, biology and ecology of these ubiquitous crustaceans. The chapters collected in this volume, written by leading scientists in different fields of investigation, focus on a wide range of processes and scales, from global distribution to molecular investigations, witnessing the interest of the scientific community at different levels. These contributions point out the latest developments and case studies on a number of research issues, and will promote discussion and stimulate advances in each field of investigation. The editor is confident that readers will appreciate the contents of each chapter and will find in them inspiring suggestions for their research, or even just to satisfy their curiosity.

Book Synopsis Chemical Communication in Crustaceans by : Thomas Breithaupt
Download or read book Chemical Communication in Crustaceans written by Thomas Breithaupt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-11-25 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The crustaceans are ecologically and economically important organisms. They constitute one of the dominant invertebrate groups on earth, particularly within the aquatic realm. Crustaceans include some of the preferred scientific model organism, profitable aquaculture specimen, but also invasive nuisance species threatening native animal communities throughout the world. Chemoreception is the most important sensory modality of crustaceans, acquiring important information about their environment and picking up the chemical signals that mediate communication with conspecifics. Significant advances have been made in our understanding of crustacean chemical communication during the past decade. This includes knowledge about the identity, production, transfer, reception and behavioral function of chemical signals in selected crustacean groups. While it is well known that chemical communication is an integral part of the behavioral ecology of most living organisms, the intricate ways in which organisms allocate chemicals in communication remains enigmatic. How does the environment influence the evolution of chemical communication? What are the environmental cues that induce production or release of chemicals? How do individuals economize production and utilization of chemicals? What is the importance of molecule specificity or mix of a molecule cocktail in chemical communication? What is the role of chemical cues in multimodal communication? How does the ontogenetic stage, the sex or the physiological status of an individual affect its reaction to chemical cues? Many of these questions still represent important challenges to biologists.
Book Synopsis Biology of Copepods by : Geoffrey Boxshall
Download or read book Biology of Copepods written by Geoffrey Boxshall and published by Springer. This book was released on 1988-10-31 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the Proceedings of the Third International Conference on Copepoda, held at the British Museum (Natural History) in London during August 1987. The central theme of the conference was the biology of marine planktonic copepods, although the scientific programme was extremely varied reflecting the wide range of life styles adopted by copepods. The three invited symposia held during the conference focussed attention on particular topical areas of research within the field of marine plankton, and also provided reviews of chosen aspects of copepod biology. These symposia were highly successful. The papers they contained were both informative and stimulating and they bring to this volume a lasting significance. Each symposium was organised by its chairman; Bruce Frost (University of Washington) decided on the balance of topics, selected the speakers and introduced the session on 'The biology and taxonomy of Calanus', Roger Harris (Marine Biological Association) performed the same vital role for 'Experimental studies: rate processes in field populations of planktonic copepods', and Howard Roe (Institute of Oceanographic Sciences) for 'Oceanic and deep-sea copepods'. The impact of these papers will be much enhanced by the large number of high quality contributed and poster papers on marine plankton and by the invited review of 'Copepod luminescence' by Peter Herring (Institute of Oceano graphic Sciences). The fascinating review of 'Copepod eyes' by Mike Land FRS (University of Sussex) is not published here.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Fresh-Water Copepoda, Vol. 1 The essential basis of all biology is the accurate deter mination of species. This is not, and cannot be made, an easy matter; but it is intolerably difficult for any but the specialist in a small field, unless the work of such specialists, scattered in small papers through an infinity of periodicals, in all languages, can from time to time be brought together into some form of mono graph. Such monographs are necessarily out of date almost as soon as they are written, but at least they serve for a time to make easier the task of those concerned primarily with general problems of biology. The work involved is very great, and perhaps incom mensurate with its results, but it is justified by its necessity. At the same time, with the works of Schmeil and of Sars before me, I feel some apology is needed. Both are so admirable that I cannot hope to emulate the thoroughness and sound judgment of the one or the perfection of illustration of the other but Schmeil's book is now unprocurable, Sars deals mainly with marine forms, and, as the bibliography will show, a veritable flood of new work has poured forth since these monographs were published. As the illustrations of such a work are the most important feature, Ihave tried to give figures of every part that can have systematic value, and these figures, with very few exceptions, are original drawings made for this purpose. I have to express my thanks to the Ray Society for their liberality in reproducing so many. I am indebted to a number of friends for the loan or gift of specimens, but most particularly to Mr. R. A. Todd, who has, during the. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Monograph of the Free and Semi-Parasitic Copepoda of the British Islands, Vol. 3 The parasitic species, at one end of the series approach very nearly in structure and general appear ance to the non-parasitic; at the other end they are extremely different, exhibiting, especially in the males, many most remarkable examples of retrograde development, so that without the study of their metamorphoses it would be quite impossible to re cognise them as Copepoda, or even as Crustacea of any kind. Yet even in these degraded forms - at any rate in the females - natatory limbs in a very much atrophied condition are almost constantly found. Book Synopsis The Copepodologist's Cabinet: Aristotle to Alexander von Nordmann (330 B.C. to A.D. 1832) by : David M. Damkaer
Download or read book The Copepodologist's Cabinet: Aristotle to Alexander von Nordmann (330 B.C. to A.D. 1832) written by David M. Damkaer and published by American Philosophical Society Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Copepod crustaceans are the most numerous multicellular animals on earth. They occur in every free-living and parasitic aquatic niche. Copepods have been known since the time of Aristotle, yet there has never been a history of the study of copepods. This volume, the first in a planned three-volume series, reviews the discoveries of copepods to 1832, the year that the two distinct branches, the free-living copepods (long-known as insects) and the parasitic copepods (thought to be molluscs or worms) were finally acknowledged as members of the same Class Crustacea. The narrative includes the biographies of 90 early copepodologists and recounts their most important contributions to science. Portraits are included for two-thirds of the subjects, with considerable new material as well as information and illustrations from obscure sources. Milestones include the first description of copepods (ca. 350 B.C.), the first illustration (1554), the first free-living freshwater copepod (1688), the first explanation of a free-living copepod's metamorphosis (1756), the first permanently named copepod (1758), the first free-living marine copepod (1770), and the first description of a parasitic copepod's metamorphosis (1819). The work ends with a transition to the mid-19th century, previewing numerous personal connections that pointed toward copepodology's Golden Age in the 1890s, to be covered in Volume 2. A final volume will take the history of the study of copepods to ca. 1950.
Book Synopsis Freshwater Crustacean Zooplankton of Europe by : Leszek A. Bledzki
Download or read book Freshwater Crustacean Zooplankton of Europe written by Leszek A. Bledzki and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-20 with total page 923 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work provides a user-friendly, species level taxonomic key based on morphology, current nomenclature, and modern taxonomy using molecular tools which fulfill the most pressing needs of both researchers and environmental managers. This key arms the reader with the tools necessary to improve their species identification abilities. This book resolves another issue as well: the mix of female and male characters used in keys to the calanoid copepods. Often, during the identification process, both calanoid copepod sexes are not available, and the user of such a key is stuck with an uncertain identification. Here, separate male and female keys to the calanoid copepods are provided for both the genera and species levels.
