Book excerpt: Small business research is becoming more sophisticated as an increasing number of scholars study more complex analytical issues. In many cases research pertaining to the small firm is part of the incomplete and inefficient markets controversy in the finance literature. Because of their size and traditional organizational form, small firms often find it extremely difficult to attract significant resources in sophisticated financial markets. These markets appear to be segmented and incomplete; whether or not the markets are efficient is subject to much debate. Adyances in Small Business Finance presents a variety of research studies that indicate the unique roles of debt and equity and the sources of funds for small firms. This book contributes important insight into major questions that face small finns' financiers, managers, and owners on a daily basis. Many of the studies in this volume deal with aspects of valuation of the small firm. In some instances, the focus is on the firm's ability to attract debt or equity and in others the emphasis is on valuation of the small firm's capital. Constand, Osteryoung, and Nast focus on the determinants of capital structure for small firms that are privately owned and are highly dependent on commercial loans as their supply of debt. Timothy Bates examines firm viability and finds that surviving firms are those that began with greater initial capital, create new jobs, and are led by entrepreneurs who are better educated.

Book Synopsis Small Firms Informally Financed by : Reazul Islam
Download or read book Small Firms Informally Financed written by Reazul Islam and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1994 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World Bank Discussion Paper No. 253. Small firms are numerous in Bangladesh and contribute greatly to employment and to the provision of inexpensive goods and services. The original hypothesis for the research presented in this paper was that investigating the financing of these firms might assist in finding innovative means of financing firms that lack access to formal credit lines. Although this objective was not fully realized, the research confirmed the main assumption in the hypothesis: firms in an industry exhibit similar financial structures, but the set of similarities varies between industries. The studies also reveal that finance is not an important constraint in establishing a business. Self-finance predominates, and many firms conserve capital by renting workshops or carrying on a home- based operation. Many informal industries are net suppliers of credit to their clients and benefit poor people who buy goods and services from informal firms. The book is divided into two sections. The first presents the results of studies of small firms conducted by consultants. The second consists of two appendixes that include materials from a workshop dedicated to reviewing the studies.
Book Synopsis Investment In Startups And Small Business Financing by : Farhad Taghizadeh-hesary
Download or read book Investment In Startups And Small Business Financing written by Farhad Taghizadeh-hesary and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2021-08-03 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Successful startups and small businesses can play a significant role in economic growth and job creation. They also contribute to economic dynamism by spurring innovation and injecting competition. Startups are known to introduce new products and services that can create new value in the economy. It is notable that most startups exit within their first ten years, and most surviving young businesses do not grow but remain small. Startups and small businesses face several obstacles to their development. Accessing capital is a crucial constraint on their growth. Most startups and small businesses have difficulties getting the funds they need because of their lack of a performance track record and lack of collateral, making it difficult for lenders or investors to assess their risk. Besides, they are in the early stages of development and face a very high possibility of failure, which significantly raises financing and investment risk.Investment in Startups and Small Business Financing provides 12 thematic and case studies on new methods for bringing private investment (loans or equity) to startups and easing small businesses' access to finance (debt and capital). The contributors are senior-level policy experts and researchers from governments, think tanks, academia, and international organizations. The chapters are authored in a policy-oriented way to be understandable for the readers with a different background. This book is a precious source for the governments for adopting the right policies to develop small businesses and startups and valuable for the researchers in economics, business, and finance.
Book Synopsis The Financing of Small Business by : Lauren Helena Read
Download or read book The Financing of Small Business written by Lauren Helena Read and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-01-08 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed empirical study of how small business owners finance their enterprises, this volume compares the experiences of women with those of men. The author redresses an over-reliance on subjective and anecdotal evidence of discrimination in this area with a controlled study of forty matched pairs of male/female owners and their strategies for raising finances. The research reveals the importance of adopting a theoretical framework in which the role of gender in the financing of small businesses is considered, and the practical implications for female entrepreneurs, banks and policy-makers.

Book excerpt: This book examines access to capital by young and small businesses. The purpose of the investigation is to gain a better understanding of access to capital by young firms and how the recent economic and financial crisis has affected their access to financial capital, especially among firms owned by women and minorities and firms that are high tech in nature. In light of the key role in small business finance played by financial institutions, this book pays disproportionate attention to access of bank loans. Although these issues are important, research has traditionally been limited by a lack of appropriate data. A primary obstacle has been the absence of representative samples of small businesses that contain detailed descriptions of their access to financing. The primary source of data on this question, the Federal Reserve Survey of Small Business Finances, was discontinued in 2003, and is thus unavailable for studying the effects of the financial crisis on small businesses. A second obstacle has been the tendency of researchers to analyse data on cross sections of small businesses of varying ages and sizes at a single point in time. While the findings from these snapshots have been valuable to scholars and policy-makers, they have also been limited. Because they are static, these snapshots do not capture the ways in which small business financing unfolds over the life cycle of the firm and changes over time. This book attempts to overcome these obstacles by examining the effects of the changing financial environment generally and the economic crisis specifically, on access to capital by small businesses over the 2004 through 2010 period, controlling for business and owner characteristics.

Book Synopsis Access to Bank Credit and SME Financing by : Stefania Rossi
Download or read book Access to Bank Credit and SME Financing written by Stefania Rossi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-02 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how the global financial and European sovereign debt crises have forced small-and-medium-sized businesses (SMEs) to reassess and adapt their funding strategies. At the heart of the matter is the worsening access to bank credit for such enterprises. Through this discussion we learn how crucial an understanding of SME-financing is to policy makers, in light of the fact that SMEs dominate the business landscape in Europe and are the main drivers of employment, growth and innovation in the European economy. Contributing chapters present expert analysis and investigate many topics including the problems faced by SMEs in accessing bank credit and the cost of funding and its determinants. Particular attention is also given to how credit-constrained enterprises may reformulate their funding strategies by employing alternative, non-bank, financial resources, and how regulators could support SMEs in broadening and improving their funding opportunities.
Book Synopsis Finance, Firm Size, and Growth by : Thorsten Beck
Download or read book Finance, Firm Size, and Growth written by Thorsten Beck and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2005 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The authors examine whether financial development boosts the growth of small firms more than large firms and hence provides information on the mechanisms through which financial development fosters aggregate economic growth. They define an industry's technological firm size as the firm size implied by industrial specific production technologies, including capital intensities and scale economies. Using cross-industry, cross-country data, the results indicate that financial development exerts a disproportionately large effect on the growth of industries that are technologically more dependent on small firms. This suggests that financial development accelerates economic growth by removing growth constraints on small firms and also implies that financial development has sectoral as well as aggregate growth ramifications. This paper--a product of the Finance Group, Development Research Group--is part of a larger effort in the group to understand the growth finance link"--World Bank web site.
Book Synopsis Finance and the Small Firm by : A. Hughes
Download or read book Finance and the Small Firm written by A. Hughes and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This edited collection is based upon work carried out under the ESRC's Small Business Programme. It examines key issues in the financing of small businesses. The starting premise is that there are imperfections in the market for the provision of finance for small firms. Excessive dependence upon short-term facilities such as loans and overdrafts has inhibited more long-standing relationships between small firms and providers of finance which would be more mutually beneficial." "The contributors call for changes which would solve this current imbalance. They suggest that small firms need to become more 'professional' in their financial management, with owners more prepared to 'share' equity. Financial institutions need to rely less on collateral and concentrate more on making informed judgements about the qualities of each business." "In this volume small firms are not treated as one indistinguishable mass but are broken down into specific types: the micro firm; the 'high-tech' small firm and the small firm owned by an individual from an ethnic minority. This treatment is unique." "Written by experts in small business, this volume will be of great interest to researchers in small business, students of industrial economics, business finance and management studies and by government policy advisers and financial advisers."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis Entrepreneurial Finance by : Cristiano Bellavitis
Download or read book Entrepreneurial Finance written by Cristiano Bellavitis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the proliferation of new sources of entrepreneurial finance and how these sources have the potential to make it easier for ventures to raise capital and grow. To date, entrepreneurial finance literature has developed a rich tradition of research on venture capital and angel finance. However, the emergence of ‘new’ sources of finance – such as crowdfunding – and the limited attention paid to ‘traditional’ debt financing and financial bootstrapping offer opportunities to explore, from different points of view and theoretical perspectives, the challenges that ventures face. The objective of this book is to explore these new and traditional sources of finance; suggest how these phenomena can be better understood conceptually; and guide new ways of understanding the topic in future, especially for researchers. The introduction outlines the new sources of entrepreneurial finance, and in comparing them with more traditional sources, proposes challenges in our conceptual understanding of these new and traditional sources. The subsequent chapters deal with important topics, including looking at the way different funding sources may interact; factors that impede family firms from getting external funding; how best to succeed with equity crowdfunding by looking at pre-selection processes; considering differences in perceptions towards funding sources arising from whether entrepreneurs are native born or immigrants; factors to consider when funding specialized assets in high uncertain sectors such as biotechnology; and the internationalization of business angel activity. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Venture Capital journal.
