Book excerpt: In this thesis, two major modifications to an ultra-high-vacuum scanning tunneling microscope system are described: an update to the cooling plate structure for more effective cooling of the dipstick and sample holder, and the installation of a capillary doser for concentrating the precursor gas to the tip-ample junction during silicon nanostructure growth. The updated cooling plate is able to shorten the total sample preparation time from 6 hours to 3 hours. The capillary doser lowers the base pressure during the silicon growth experiment by two orders of magnitude. The system operation after the system modification was tested. The system is now ready for subsequent silicon nanostructure growth using disilane gas.

Book excerpt: Many of the devices and systems used in modern industry are becoming progressively smaller and have reached the nanoscale domain. Nanofabrication aims at building nanoscale structures, which can act as components, devices, or systems, in large quantities at potentially low cost. Nanofabrication is vital to all nanotechnology fields, especially for the realization of nanotechnology that involves the traditional areas across engineering and science. This is the first book solely dedicated to the manufacturing technology in nanoscale structures, devices, and systems and is designed to satisfy the growing demands of researchers, professionals, and graduate students. Both conventional and non-conventional fabrication technologies are introduced with emphasis on multidisciplinary principles, methodologies, and practical applications. While conventional technologies consider the emerging techniques developed for next generation lithography, non-conventional techniques include scanning probe microscopy lithography, self-assembly, and imprint lithography, as well as techniques specifically developed for making carbon tubes and molecular circuits and devices. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: Atom, Molecule, and Nanocluster Manipulations for Nanostructure Fabrication Using Scanning Probe Microscopy (3,320 KB). Contents: Atomic Force Microscope Lithography (N Kawasegi et al.); Nanowire Assembly and Integration (Z Gu & D H Gracias); Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography (H Kinoshita); Electron Projection Lithography (T Miura et al.); Electron Beam Direct Writing (K Yamazaki); Electron Beam Induced Deposition (K Mitsuishi); Focused Ion Beams and Interaction with Solids (T Ishitani et al.); Nanofabrication of Nanoelectromechanical Systems (NEMS): Emerging Techniques (K L Ekinci & J Brugger); and other papers. Book excerpt: The Precision Engineering Center has recently begun a research program into applications of STM to Nanotechnology. Few tools permit humans to control events and processes at the manometer level, and of those, the STM is the most well-suited to the task. A versatile new ultra-high-vacuum (UHV) STM is being built to study the use of STM for the manipulation of nanometer-scale particles. Part of the STM`s usefulness will be due to its being positioned directly beneath the focused ion beam (FIB). The interface of the STM with the FIB will allow the STM to take advantage of the FIB for long-range imaging and as a particle source; the FIB can in turn use the STM for in situ, high-resolution imaging of micromachined features.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) provides three-dimensional real- space images of surfaces at high spatial resolution. When the surface is flat and clean, even atoms can be imaged. Its extreme usefulness has led it to near instantaneous acceptance as a characterization tool. This book covers fundamental concepts of STM operation, image interpretation, instrumentation, and techniques for various applications. It als contains advanced treatments of theory and spectroscopy. Surface physicists, electrochemists, materials scientists, and other scientists who see a use for STM will find the depth of coverage and accompanying reference lists in this book essential to their work. In addition, those who wish to add the capabilities of probe microscopy to their operations, such as microscopists and quality control engineers, will find the basic information in this book.

Book excerpt: Timely information on scientific and engineering developments occurring in laboratories around the world provides critical input to maintaining the economic and technological strength of the United States. Moreover, sharing this information quickly with other countries can greatly enhance the productivity of scientists and engineers. These are some of the reasons why the National Science Foundation (NSF) has been involved in funding science and technology assessments comparing the United States and foreign countries since the early 1980s. A substantial number of these studies have been conducted by the World Technology Evaluation Center (WTEC) managed by Loyola College through a cooperative agreement with NSF. The National Science and Technology Council (NSTC), Committee on Technology's Interagency Working Group on NanoScience, Engineering and Technology (CT/IWGN) worked with WTEC to develop the scope of this Nanostucture Science and Technology report in an effort to develop a baseline of understanding for how to strategically make Federal nanoscale R&D investments in the coming years. The purpose of the NSTC/WTEC activity is to assess R&D efforts in other countries in specific areas of technology, to compare these efforts and their results to U. S. research in the same areas, and to identify opportunities for international collaboration in precompetitive research. Many U. S. organizations support substantial data gathering and analysis efforts focusing on nations such as Japan. But often the results of these studies are not widely available. At the same time, government and privately sponsored studies that are in the public domain tend to be "input" studies.

This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The synthesis of two-dimensional organic nanostructures on metal and semiconducting surfaces is studied under ultra-high vacuum (UHV) conditions. Three halogenated organic molecules are investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) on both metal and semiconducting substrates. The first system studied is the adsorption of brominated tetrathienoanthracene (TBTTA) molecules onto the Si(111) √3×√3 R30°-Ag (Si(111) √3-Ag) surface at room temperature. STM images reveal that at low coverage, the molecules readily migrate to step edges and defects in the √3 overlayer. With increasing coverage, the molecules eventually form compact supramolecular structures. At higher coverage (0.4 - 0.6 monolayers), the spatial extent of the supramolecular structures is often limited by defects in the underlying √3 layer. Our results suggest that the √3-Ag surface provides a relatively inert substrate for the adsorption of TBTTA molecules, and that the supramolecular structures are held together by relatively weak intermolecular forces. The second organic molecule investigated is 2,4,6-tris(4-iodophenyl)-1,3,5-triazine (TIPT). Molecules are deposited onto two related surfaces, Ag(111) and Si(111) √3-Ag. On the Ag(111) surface, TIPT molecules dehalogenate spontaneously upon deposition and form organometallic structures at room temperature. Gentle annealing at ~ 100 °C leads to a more ordered molecular network characterized almost exclusively by hexagons and polymerization was confirmed after further annealing at ~135 °C. On the Si(111) √3-Ag surface TIPT molecules remain largely intact and readily diffuse to step edges and defects in the √3 overlayer. At low coverage, most images display regularly spaced "fuzzy lines" which indicate molecular diffusion at room temperature. At higher coverage (0.4 - 0.8 monolayers), supramolecular domains are formed. The geometry of the cell is similar to an energy optimized 2-d free-standing TIPT layer determined by DFT indicating that de-halogenation does not occur on the Si(111) √3-Ag surface at room temperature and that the supramolecular domains are characterized by zig-zag rows of intact monomers held together primarily by I···H hydrogen-like bonding. Finally, the adsorption of 2,6,10-tribromo-4,8,12-trioxa-3a2-azadibenzo[cd,mn]pyrene (TBTANG) molecules is detailed on both Au(111) and Si(111) √3-Ag surfaces. Dosing TBTANG molecules onto a Au(111) surface at room temperature leads to the self-assembly of intact molecules while deposition onto a hot Au(111) surface yields a complete polymer layer. On the Si(111) √3-Ag surface the molecules display high mobility. With increasing coverage, TBTANG exhibits long-range self-assembly of intact molecules. As the coverage approaches one monolayer, the self-assembled layer extends over the entire surface. Defects in the √3-Ag substrate affect the integrity of domains, but do not limit the size. Preliminary annealing experiments do not lead to polymerization of the TBTANG layer. Rather, annealing at ~ 90°C leads to disordered regions which nucleate primarily at step edges.
