Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autoradiography in Biology and Medicine focuses on the applications of autoradiography in medicine and biology, including photographic processes, emulsions, and response of films to isotopes and x-rays. The book first offers information on the meaning of autoradiography, including the etymology of autoradiography, photographic emulsion as a scientific instrument, and the relationship of biologists and autoradiography. The publication then examines the photographic process and comparative response of commercial and scientific emulsions. Discussions focus on fixation, washing, emulsion, response of films to electrons, x-rays, and gamma rays, and response of films to beta ray spectra of isotopes. The text takes a look at commercial photographic materials for autoradiography, autoradiographic image, and resolution. The manuscript then reviews the estimation of dose and exposure time, sources of error, and techniques. Topics include chemical variables, estimation of exposure time, errors occurring during the preparation of the autoradiogram for exposure, and contour autoradiography. The book is a valuable reference for readers interested in autoradiography.

Book excerpt: This book describes hazards from radon progeny and other alpha-emitters that humans may inhale or ingest from their environment. In their analysis, the authors summarize in one document clinical and epidemiological evidence, the results of animal studies, research on alpha-particle damage at the cellular level, metabolic pathways for internal alpha-emitters, dosimetry and microdosimetry of radionuclides deposited in specific tissues, and the chemical toxicity of some low-specific-activity alpha-emitters. Techniques for estimating the risks to humans posed by radon and other internally deposited alpha-emitters are offered, along with a discussion of formulas, models, methods, and the level of uncertainty inherent in the risk estimates.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most frequently requested investigation in any nuclear medicine department remains the technetium-99m (99mTc)-labelled diphosphonate bone scan. Despite rapid advances in all imaging modalities. there has been no serious challenge to the role of bone scanning in the evaluation of the skeleton. The main reason for this is the exquisite sensitivity of the bone scan for lesion detection. combined with clear visualisation of the whole skeleton. In recent years several new diphosphonate agents have become available with claims for superior imaging of the skeleton. Essentially. they all have higher affinity for bone. thus allowing the normal skeleton to be visualised all the more clearly. However. as will be dis cussed. this may occur at some cost to the principal role of bone scanning. lesion detection. The major strength of nuclear medicine is its ability to provide functional and physiological information. With bone scanning this leads to high sensitivity for focal disease if there has been any disturbance of skeletal metabolism. However. in many other clinical situations. and particularly in metabolic bone disease. more generalised alteration in skeletal turnover may occur. and quantitation of diphosphonate uptake by the skeleton can provide valuable clinical information.

It shows the progress that has been made in over a half-century of study of this one bark beetle. It also records the trials and errors--the research that ran into blind alleys. The record of this pioneer effort in the field of forest entomology in the United States should be of great help to research workers who are faced with similar problems.

Book excerpt: The diagnosis of cancer in the inaccessible regions of the gastrointestinal tract is difficult at best. Neoplasia frequently advances insidiously and largely without the patient's knowledge. Ideally, simple survey tests applied periodically to those segments of the population considered most susceptible should be available. For all practical purposes such means of diagnosis are nonexistent. Those who specialize in gastro intestinal cancer must, therefore, do the best they can. The best consists of many means, all good in themselves, but often subject to failure or misinterpretation of results. Any aid which will give even a small amount of positive information to tip the balance for or against the diagnosis of cancer in an obscure situation must be considered of value to the gastroenterologist. The material presented in this volume represents our experience with such an aid over the past eight years. The use of radioactive phosphorus (P3l!) and a miniature Geiger counter to record the differences in beta emission over tumors as compared to normal tissue now appears clinically useful in the diagnosis of gastrointestinal malignancy where the organ is available for such instrumentation. An attempt has been made to present the findings as objectively and as specifically as possible so as to provide maximum assistance to other gastrointestinal oncologists as well as others who have only a general interest in the subject.
