As John Bell once said: "Entanglement expresses the spooky nonlocality inherent to quantum mechanics", and its study not only concerns the foundations of any quantum theory, but also has important applications in quantum information and condensed matter theory, amongst others. The first chapters are devoted to the study of "entanglement entropies", a popular measure of the "quantumness" of a physical system. The main focus of the analysis is the one-dimensional XYZ spin-1/2 chain in equilibrium, an interacting theory which in addition to being integrable also has interesting scaling limits, such as the sine-Gordon field theory. Moving away from equilibrium the subsequent chapters deal with the dynamics of quantum correlators after an instantaneous quantum quench. The emphasis is on two different models and techniques; the transverse field Ising chain is studied using the form-factor approach and the O(3) non-linear sigma model is studied by means of the semi-classical theory. In the final chapter the author highlights an important general result: in the absence of long-range interactions in the final Hamiltonian the dynamics of a quantum system are determined by the same statistical ensemble that describes static correlations.

One of the most interesting examples is the Seiberg-Witten ansatz for the N=2 SUSY supersymmetric Yang-Mills gauge theories in four dimensions. The aim of this book is to present in a clear form the main ideas of the relation between the exact solutions to the supersymmetric (SUSY) Yang-Mills theories and integrable systems. This relation is a beautiful example of reformulation of close-to-realistic physical theory in terms widely known in mathematical physics ? systems of integrable nonlinear differential equations and their algebro-geometric solutions.First, the book reviews what is known about the physical problem: the construction of low-energy effective actions for the N=2 Yang-Mills theories from the traditional viewpoint of quantum field theory. Then the necessary background information from the theory of integrable systems is presented. In particular the author considers the definition of the algebro-geometric solutions to integrable systems in terms of complex curves or Riemann surfaces and the generating meromorphic 1-form. These definitions are illustrated in detail on the basic example of the periodic Toda chain.Several ?toy-model? examples of string theory solutions where the structures of integrable systems appear are briefly discussed. Then the author proceeds to the Seiberg-Witten solutions and show that they are indeed defined by the same data as finite-gap solutions to integrable systems. The complete formulation requires the introduction of certain deformations of the finite-gap solutions described in terms of quasiclassical or Whitham hierarchies. The explicit differential equations and direct computations of the prepotential of the effective theory are presented and compared when possible with the well-known computations from supersymmetric quantum gauge theories.Finally, the book discusses the properties of the exact solutions to SUSY Yang-Mills theories and their relation to integrable systems in the general context of the modern approach to nonperturbative string or M-theory.

This book provides an introduction to the arguably most important method for obtaining exact results for strongly interacting models of quantum matter - the Bethe ansatz. It introduces and discusses the physical concepts and mathematical tools used to construct realistic models for a variety of different fields, including condensed matter physics and quantum optics. The various forms of the Bethe ansatz - algebraic, coordinate, multicomponent, and thermodynamic Bethe ansatz, and Bethe ansatz for finite systems - are then explained in depth and employed to find exact solutions for the physical properties of the integrable forms of strongly interacting quantum systems. The Bethe ansatz is one of the very few methodologies which can calculate physical properties non-perturbatively. Arguably, it is the only such method we have which is exact. This means, once the model has been set up, no further approximations or assumptions are necessary, and the relevant physical properties of the model can be computed exactly. Furthermore, an infinite set of conserved quantities can be obtained. The quantum mechanical model under consideration is fully integrable. This makes the search for quantum models which are amenable to an exact solution by the Bethe ansatz, and which are quantum integrable, so important and rewarding. The exact solution will provide benchmarks for other models, which do not admit an exact solution. Bethe ansatz techniques provide valuable insight into the physics of strongly correlated quantum matter.
