Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of the 1963 feeding trials may be summarized as follows: (1) Fish fed a vitamin-supplemented all-meal diet were maintained successfully for 24 weeeks with low mortality; (2) Rancidity in salmon carcass meal as indicated by a high TBA value reduced growth; (3) Fish that received meat supplements deposited more protein but did not have more efficient protein utilization than fish fed all-meal diets; (4) soybean oil meal was an inadequate replacement for cottonseed meal when fed as a component of the basal ration; (5) increasing the caloric level of a diet produced a sparing action on the protein requirements of the fish; (6) blood characteristics of fish from all diets were similar and satisfactory; (7) Fish fed with the meat-control diet had fatty infiltrated hepatic cells, which was not the case with fish fed the all-meal diets.
Download or read book Fish Nutrition written by John Halver and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-06-25 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fish Nutrition aims to present the state of knowledge of basic and applied nutritional requirements of fishes. Most of the information found in this book involves salmonids, their nutrition, and metabolism of nutrients. This is in view of the fact that more research has been done and completed with this fish. Although applied fish nutrition is a very broad field, this book focuses on some of its aspects. These include the classes of nutrients and requirements for several types of fishes. This book comprises of 11 chapters. The first few chapters deal with the general nutrient requirements of fishes. Then, other chapters discuss calorie and energy as well as micro- and macronutrient needs and requirements. The following chapters deal with the non-nutrient components of the diet, or those that influence the characteristics of food products including texture, odor, flavor, and color. Other topics covered are enzymes and systems of intermediary metabolism (Chapter 6); feed formulation and evaluation (Chapter 7); and salmonid husbandry techniques (Chapter 9). Nutritional fish diseases are also discussed in this book. Some of these diseases include thyroid tumor, gill disease, anemia, lipoid liver degeneration, and visceral granuloma. In Chapter 11, the relationship of nutrition and pathology is given emphasis. This chapter also tackles the diet and general fish husbandry. This topic is very important, because an adequate diet for fish husbandry is the foundation of fish farming.

Book Synopsis Test of Different Components in the Abernathy Salmon Diet by : Laurie G. Fowler
Download or read book Test of Different Components in the Abernathy Salmon Diet written by Laurie G. Fowler and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Substitute components in the Abernathy salmon diet were tested in 2 years of feeding trials with fall chinook salmon fingerlings. These diet tests indicated that turbot meal and dogfish meal were adequate substitutes for salmon meal. Soybean oil was superior to peanut, corn, cottonseed, or safflower oil. Corn gluten, safflower or soybean meals were inadequate substitutes for cottonseed meal. Dried buttermilk was equal to dried skim milk. The mixed diet could be stored under refrigeration for 3 days and the premixed meals could be held at room temperature for several weeks without observable deleterious effect on the fish; storage for greater periods was deleterious.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In epizootics of channel catfish virus diseasse (CCVD) at four widely separated fish farms in 1968, affected fry and fingerlings spiraled, hung in a vertical position with head at the surface, or were distressed. In various combinations were edema, hemorrages, and anemia. The disease had a peracute to acute course, and stress to the fish preceded most epizootics. The virus induced formation of syncytial cells in affected cultures, which is considered at present to be of diagnostic significance. Secondary bacterial infections were found in fish with CCVD. Columnaris infection masked the symptoms of the virus disease.
