Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the Four Gospels The time of their composition cannot be deter rnined with any degree of certainty; it can be only approximately stated. Somewhere between A. D. 50 and 65 the synoptics, as Matthew, Mark and Luke are called, were written. The Gospel by J ohn dates from a later period. Probably in the decade between A. D. 80 and 90 it was published by the servant of Christ whose name it bears. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Four Gospels: A New Translation Jesus and his disciples spoke and wrote Aramaic. His reported words and discourses, and the earliest accounts of his deeds, were written down and circulated in that language, as no one doubts. Documents of this sort were numerous (Luke 1:1), and they attest literary skill of a high order; thus notably the rather extensive source, "Q," used by Matthew and Luke. In what way these primitive records were related to our Four Gospels, is a question which hitherto has not received any satisfactory answer. It is purposed here to show that the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and John were composed in Aramaic on the basis of popular documents widespread in Palestine, and that they were by others translated into Greek without intended change. Also, that Luke employed only Semitic sources, assembling them into an especially complete Gospel, which he himself translated. The evidence of translation, in each and all of the Four Gospels, is perfectly clear and very complete. The attempt is here made to give an English rendering which takes constant account of the original Semitic text, everywhere closely reproduced in the Greek. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Exposition of the Four Gospels, Vol. 2 of 2 But I hope that further consideration may shew that there is no book which exactly attains the Object I have had in View; and that that object may be held to be one of some importance. These Notes are intended for reading to households, and for the use of the middle and lower classes. They are meant to be explanatory of difficulties: simply in the sense of pointing out, in full and popular language, the ordinary and received meaning of such words and passages as persons of those classes need to have explained. The principle on which to do this - what to set down and what to omit - has been founded on ula\ny years' experience in Sun_day School teaching. What has appeared to be proper matter for question and answer, as regards explanation, in an intelligent upper class in a good Sunday School, I have thought suitable for exposition in these Notes. It is not that the Sunday Scholars, or the ordinary readers of the classes referred to, are ignorant of much that is here written; but that it may be of advantage to them in various ways to have it at hand, in plain and intelligible language. I have not aimed at direct practical teaching; but such teaching is inevitably involved to some, though not to a very great extent, in any attempt at explanation. So limited, however, I trust that such a publication may not be thought unsuitable for a layman to venture upon. It may indeed be thought that the absence both of full practical application, and of much of the deeper, wider, more mysterious and more spiritual meanings of the sacred text, leaves, in many cases, but a cold, dry, inadequate residuum. I can only reply that that larger field is unexhausted and inexhaustible; that it is for those to cultivate it whose profession and studies give them the proper authority to do so; and that simple readers will be then best fitted to benefit by that more advanced teaching, when they have a clear hold of the primary sense of the records with which it deals. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the New Testament: The Collection of the Four Gospels and the Gospel of St. Matthew The first and strictly preliminary chapter of this second volume will not deal with the composition of our gospels. I shall confine myself to inquire how and when the group, hitherto closed and inseparable, of these four writings was formed, Which we shall have thereafter to study separately. In the first volume of this work I had not to strike out a new path, for studies pursued during a long series of years had led me to convictions very much in accordance with the views generally admitted on the composition, the date, and the chronological order of the thirteen epistles Of St. Paul which I regard as authentic. We are fully assured, that there is very much in the four Gospels which manifest the Divine perfections and distino tive beauties of each one, which has not yet been brought forth by those who have sought to explore their inexhaustible depths; that there is here a wide field for diligent research, and that those who will pursue this study, prayerfully, for themselves, will be richly rewarded for their pains. May it please God to stir up an increasing number of His people to search this portion of His holy Word which reveal, an nowhere else, the excellencies of His blessed Son, which were so signally displayed by Him during the years that He tab ernacled among men. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Four Gospels: With a Practical Critical Commentary for Priests and Students There can be no doubt that the Matthew of the First Gospel is the same person as Lev1 in Mark and Luke, because the circumstances of the three accounts are identical. It was quite common for Jews to Change their names, and it is most probable that St. Matthew, out of gratitude to God for his conversion, changed his name from Levi to Matthew, which means gift of God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Four Gospels, Vol. 1 of 2: With Notes, Chiefly Explanatory; Designed for Teachers Our English translation possesses many acknowledged excellences, and is worthy still to continue a light to our feet, and a lamp to our path. Yet, in various parts, it needs elucidation. This arises both from some of the principles which regulated the translators, and from the changes which, since their day, have come upon the meaning of some English words, and from the circumstance, that some other words have become obsolete. The great attention, too, which has been paid to manuscripts and editions of the Greek Testament, since our translation was made, confers a great advantage on a student of the present age. Without enlarging on these topics, suffice it to say, that frequently our translators paid more attention to the idiom of the original Greek, than to that of their own language.
