If no better name exists, it were better to rec ognize the new type and to invent a new name. The poetry of the Hebrews is so dif ferent, in respect to even the poetic elements, from other poetry as to require a unique analysis and a unique description, and why not its products? The Hebrews acted as diflerently from Europeans in this as they did in the matter of tense, and as in the case Of the tense, it results in as much confusion to speak Of Hebrew drama. Solomon's song is a single poem or a series of poems grouped into a unity, on the subject of love and would better be called an idyl. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ten Studies in the Psalms There is, perhaps, no part of the Old Testament which speaks so simply and directly to the universal heart as the Psalter. Yet even the most familiar psalms come home to us with increased freshness and power when, by sympathetic study, we have traveled back to the world in which their writers stood, and learned to look out upon it with their eyes. The short studies in this volume are an attempt to interpret, in this way, a few of the psalms that deal with important aspects of the religious life, and to show their vital bearing upon the life of to - day. In their doubts, struggles, and aspirations, those ancient men are very near us, and they speak to us with an accent that is strangely modern. I have tried to make this plain in the course of the exposition, and to illustrate their kinship with us by quotation from modern writers. The treatment of the psalms here selected is expository. But, without. Being didactic or homiletic, I have at the same time sought to make it practically helpful, by gathering up the study of each psalm in a series of personal questions, which are intended both to carry the reader into the heart of the psalm, and also to enable him to search his own inner life. I desire here to express my obligation to Messrs. Charles Serib ner's Sons for their generous courtesy in allowing me to reprint, from my volume on The Messages of the Psalmists in The Mes sages of the Bible Series the paraphrase of the psalms here selected for study. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Testament Problems: Critical Studies in the Psalms Isaiah It will be observed that on some points of detail I modify views that were expressed in my earlier volume. The main position there assumed, however, has undergone no change. I have still much to set forth that could not be presented in connexion with the accompanying studies. In the meantime, I venture to think that enough has been said to justify the claim that such lines of research as I have pursued represent an alter native Criticism of the Old Testament from which results of peculiar interest may be expected. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies on the Book of Psalms: The Structural Connection of the Book of Psalms, Both in Single Psalms and in the Psalter as an Organic Whole This Book is simply what it calls itself Studies on the Book of Psalms. It does not pretend to be an exhaustive treatise on the Psalter, but only to follow out a certain line of investigation which long ago seemed to the Author to offer a satisfactory solution of many difficulties in Hebrew Literature. Advancing study of the Sacred Writings has not tended to weaken his faith in the fruitfulness of this line of inquiry, but, on the contrary, fully to justify it. One thing, however, it may be confidently asserted, is certain, and that is, that whatever that period is, and whoever the authors may have been, {many of the conceptions contained in the Psalms re flect developments of thought among pious Israelites from a time long anterior to the foundation of the Monarchy to a time which may be roughly described as the Maccabaean 3 period. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study and Use of the Psalms, Vol. 1 To those who read the psalms in their original language I must explain that I have throughout, even when referring to the Hebrew text, numbered the verses as in the English Biblical version. This was the only simple and consistent course to take. The constant use of a double set of figures would have been cum brous; the alternate resort to the English and Hebrew systems of numbering would have been a source of endless perplexity; and if either the one or the other were to be exclusively adopted, there could be no question to which of the two, in a work mainly ln tended for English readers, the preference must be given. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the CL, Psalms: Their Undesigned Coincidences With the Independent Scripture Histories Confirming and Illustrating Both Author's laborious and prayerful researches in Holy Scripture for many years. His aim has been to bring out from vague generality into their vivid distinctness the personal and national allusions occurring in the several Psalms, by comparison of these with the Scripture histories which synchronise with them. The incidental and unobtrusive correspondences of phrase and fact between the Psalms and the independent histories prove that the coincidence is the result of truth, not of design. Thus a powerful confirmation is afforded of the genuineness, and therefore of the inspired authority, of those Old Testament Scriptures which modern rationalism has assailed. The following Table of Contents will serve as a copious index of the particulars discussed. An Index of the Psalms noticed in this work will be given at the end, and will include the Whole CL. Of the Psalter, With references to the Lectures which severally treat of and illustrate them so the student of any particular Psalm will know in What Lecture to find the illustration of the Psalm he desires. There is nothing they contain which is not familiar to Old Testament scholars but it is hoped that they may be of interest and use to many who are not experts, for the writer has been at pains, apart from his own researches, to consult a number of the most modern commentaries on the Psalms, as well as some which are not of recent date. Moreover, some subjects are dealt with, which, for Obvious reasons, are not discussed in Commentaries; but which, nevertheless, have a certain bearing on the study of the Psalms. Readers who are not in a position to consult many books, may be glad to have these subjects placed before them we mean, such subjects as the music of the ancient east; music among the Hebrews; the liturgical use of the psalms the psalms in the worship of the ancient synagogue the origin of the synagogue; the psalms in the Christian Church. Book excerpt: The Psalms in Human Life, since the first pub Hcation of the book in 1903, is itself a striking illustration of the sway which the Hebrew Psalter continues to exercise over the hearts of men. The significance of the Psalms in human experience may probably be realised in various ways. The object of this book has been to bring out the fact by cumulative evidence, drawn from a wide range of history. In this enlarged edition of the original book, the structure and many of the chapters remain unaltered. But some general illustrations have been added, as well as upwards of forty instances of the use of the Psalms either by famous men, or in famous books, or on famous occasions. A mong the most important of these added instances are those associated with the Emperor Julian, St. Severinus of Vienna, St. Brendan and his Voyage, Benvenuto Cellini, Pizarro in Peru, Joseph de Maistre, Thackeray, F. W. H. (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Plain Commentary on the Book of Psalms, (the Prayer-Book Version, ) Chiefly Founded on the Fathers, Vol. 2: Containing Psalms 73-150 Iris, of course, clear that the meaning which all who read the Psalms, as well as other portions of Holy Scriptures, have first to look to, is that of the words taken in their plain and literal sense. We certainly can make no great progress in the study of God's Word until we have understood its Literal meaning. In the historical books this is generally very plain; but in the poetical and prophetical por tions of the Bible it is much more difficult to dis cover it, because the writers intended that it should be so. It was one of the great points of ancient learning, as it is of modem. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
