Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Stagecraft This book is a companion volume to The Theory of the Theatre. The principles outlined in the former work were derived from a study of dramatic art in general, without particular reference to any single period; but the principles outlined in the present work have been derived mainly from a study of the drama of to-day. In this growing age of stagecraft, it is necessary that criticism should bestir itself to keep astride with the rapid revolutions in dramatic artistry that are being effected before our very eyes. The Theory of the Theatre dealt chiefly with principles inherited by the present from the past: but Studies in Stagecraft deals chiefly with principles that seem destined to be bequeathed by the present to the future. Most of the studies included in this volume have appeared, in earlier versions, in one or another of the magazines in which, in recent years, I have conducted departments of dramatic criticism, - namely, The Bookman, Vogue, Everybody's Magazine, and Dress and Vanity Fair. One chapter has been compounded from two papers contributed to Art and Progress. To the proprietors of these publications I am indebted for the privilege of quoting from my contributions to their pages. It is scarcely necessary to add that these studies have been diligently revised and, in many passages, entirely rewritten. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Play of Today: Studies in Play-Structure for the Student and the Theatre-Goer It is unfortunate, however, not to enjoy anything but laughter in the theater. For even if the exhausted moderns who profess to care for nothing but fun could see farcical plays continually, they might grow as tired of them as Of everything else. But good farce is always so rare as to limit the theatergoing of those who tolerate no other sort Of play. Depending solely upon mirth for the restoration of our jaded faculties. The individual studies are neither regular histories nor collections of critical essays written from one particular point of View; rather they are books for any reader seeking a full and informed participation in the literature and drama of which they treat. Because they are the result of the collaboration of groups of writers with varied skills and interests, each book offers not one guide but several, and reflects many kinds of appreciation: This volume on Jacobean theatre is the first of the series. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of the Play, Vol. 1 of 1: Studies and Illustrations and Histrionic Story, Life, and Character IN the Preface to the first edition of this book I noted that the Theatre had become specially an object of attention amongst us. Six years have passed, and, as I judge, there has been important increase of the general favour and high estimation enjoyed by our stage. It seems fitting, therefore, that A Book of the Play should now assume a popular form, and be placed easily within the reach of a larger class of readers than it originally addressed. Those interested in the transactions of the Theatre are assuredly more numerous to-day than they were yesterday. Book excerpt: “On Beckett: Essays and Criticism” is the first collection of writings about the Nobel Prize–winning author that covers the entire spectrum of his work, and also affords a rare glimpse of the private Beckett. More has been written about Samuel Beckett than about any other writer of this century – countless books and articles dealing with him are in print, and the progression continues geometrically. “On Beckett” brings together some of the most perceptive writings from the vast amount of scrutiny that has been lavished on the man; in addition to widely read essays there are contributions from more obscure sources, viewpoints not frequently seen. Together they allow the reader to enter the world of a writer whose work has left an impact on the consciousness of our time perhaps unmatched by that of any other recent creative imagination.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elizabethan Playhouse, and Other Studies The genial reception given to my earlier book on the Elizabethan Playbouse has encouraged me to issue this Second Series of studies. My chief aim has been, as before, to throw additional light on the obscurities of the Eliza bethan Stage, (and to emphasize the remarkable Vitality of its conventions by demonstrating how many of them contrived to Wind their tendrils round the trunk of early picture-stage dramaturgy. We sometimes forget that if there have been growth and decadence since Shakespeare's time, there has also been a certain measure of continuity) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theatre Fires and Panics: Their Causes and Prevention This little book is not intended to be a general treatise on Theatre Planning and Construction. It is simply, as its title implies, a discussion of the causes and the prevention of fires and panics in theatres. A few years ago the writer prepared several essays on the subject, which are herewith reproduced substantially as originally given. The writer has added at the end of the book a list of the literature (works, pamphlets, and articles in technical journals) bearing upon the sub ject, which he has found of value in studying the whole question, and which he hopes will be helpful to others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies From Attic Drama For those who are unfamiliar with the conditions under which the Greek play was produced, it may be stated that the occasion was a religious festival at which the dramatists competed, the theatre was in the Open air (the theatre at Athens seating about thirty thousand people), and the actors, who were men, for the female as for the male parts, wore masks and were artificially raised by a sort of high clog or buskin.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from University Studies of the University of Nebraska, Vol. 13 Companies in all the public theatres Shifted and changed like satellites in erratic orbits about central suns. None were stable. Uncertain financial conditions, internal differences, or other theatrical troubles were the common causes. Almost every change of company can be traced to financial difficulties. More than an equal share of these troubles huddled on the backs of the Burbages in connection with the Theatre and its companies from the first. Briefly may we survey the troubled years that led up to the organization of the burbage-shakespeare company and the building of the Globe. Unlike her Nipponese neighbour, China is not a borrowing nation.
