Book Synopsis Worlds of social dancing by : James Nott
Download or read book Worlds of social dancing written by James Nott and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2022-03-22 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the 1920s, much of the world was ‘dance mad,’ as dancers from Buenos Aires to Tokyo, from Manchester to Johannesburg and from Chelyabinsk to Auckland, engaged in the Charleston, the foxtrot and a whole host of other fashionable dances. Worlds of social dancing examines how these dance cultures spread around the globe at this time and how they were altered to suit local tastes. As it looks at dance as a ‘social world’, the book explores the social and personal relationships established in encounters on dance floors on all continents. It also acknowledges the impact of radio and (sound) film as well as the contribution of dance teachers, musicians and other entertainment professionals to the making of the new dance culture.
Book Synopsis Sound as Popular Culture by : Jens Gerrit Papenburg
Download or read book Sound as Popular Culture written by Jens Gerrit Papenburg and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2016-03-18 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars consider sound and its concepts, taking as their premise the idea that popular culture can be analyzed in an innovative way through sound. The wide-ranging texts in this book take as their premise the idea that sound is a subject through which popular culture can be analyzed in an innovative way. From an infant's gurgles over a baby monitor to the roar of the crowd in a stadium to the sub-bass frequencies produced by sound systems in the disco era, sound—not necessarily aestheticized as music—is inextricably part of the many domains of popular culture. Expanding the view taken by many scholars of cultural studies, the contributors consider cultural practices concerning sound not merely as semiotic or signifying processes but as material, physical, perceptual, and sensory processes that integrate a multitude of cultural traditions and forms of knowledge. The chapters discuss conceptual issues as well as terminologies and research methods; analyze historical and contemporary case studies of listening in various sound cultures; and consider the ways contemporary practices of sound generation are applied in the diverse fields in which sounds are produced, mastered, distorted, processed, or enhanced. The chapters are not only about sound; they offer a study through sound—echoes from the past, resonances of the present, and the contradictions and discontinuities that suggest the future. These and a host of other insightful, informative essays comprise this volume. Numerous advertising and marketing scholars united to bring the reader some of their most instructive, stimulating and entertaining works." "Advertising today, more than ever, is a field filled with change, challenge, and controversy. For about a decade, the Popular Culture Association's Advertising Area has proved to be a forum for a variety of topics that highlight advertising's impact on culture and society. This volume stems from a proposal to collect into a book some of the papers presented at PCA Conferences in the Advertising Area from 1985-1989. Authors represent a variety of interests and research areas." "While original plans did not call for any specific topic divisions in this volume, the articles do present variety, though somewhat loosely categorized. In general, these categories fall under the broad umbrella of popular culture studies. Besides the familiar historical and critical presentations, articles of controversy and interest are included, such as the one on subliminal advertising. Some of these articles attempt to debunk previously written pieces and serve as a stepping stone to much further discussion." "All-in-all, you will find something to amuse, amaze, inform and stimulate in this volume of advertising variety and versatility."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research in and around popular culture continues to flourish. And its study is, more than ever, a key component of Media and Communications Studies courses, and a vital part of Cultural Studies and Cultural Sociology curricula. The sheer scale of the available research exploring popular culture--and the breadth and complexity of the canon on which it draws--makes this new four-volume Routledge collection especially timely. It answers the urgent need for a wide-ranging collection which provides ready access to the key items of scholarly literature, material that is often inaccessible or scattered throughout a variety of specialist journals and books from a broad range of disciplines. Volume I ('History and Theory') brings together the best work on the rise of popular culture as a subject for serious academic study, uncovering its roots and exploring its rapid development in the years after the Second World War. Key debates (e.g. between base and superstructure, hegemony and control, colonialism and postcolonialism) are traced to provide users with a clear understanding of the foundational approaches that inform the more applied examinations of popular culture in the succeeding volumes. Volume II assembles the most important thinking on 'Ideology and Representation', including work drawn from feminism, structuralism, post-structuralism, and postmodernism. Volume III gathers crucial work on 'Fissures and Fusions', while the last volume in the set is organized around 'Critical Departures'. Popular Culture is supplemented with a full index, and includes a comprehensive introduction, newly written by the editor, which places the collected material in its historical and intellectual context. It is destined to be valued by scholars and advanced students as a vital research and reference resource
