Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The First International Conference on Pidgins and Creoles in Melanesia was planned mainly for Tok Pisin, but no predetermined theme(s) had been proposed to the participants. Nevertheless, in this collection of papers several principal themes stand out.One is that of a revived interest in substratology, both for Tok Pisin and for Bislama. Another is what in fact amounts to a change in perspective from universalism, as supposedly competitive with the substratological orientation, towards a generalist approach to typology, which reduces the apparent polarity, from a theoretical point of view. A third is the pervasive interest of contributors in wider language issues in the social and political life of Papua New Guinea. These interests go back to the linguistic and social experience of the participants, most of whom have a long record of living among the people whose languages they have studied on a day-to-day basis, and to the relative remoteness of their inspiration from the more theoretical and perhaps ultimately untestable issues which surround the universalist approach and its claims for a bioprogram foundation for language.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Melanesian Languages I have endeavoured in the following pages to carry on the work of Bishop Patteson. lie brought to the philological study of the Melanesian languages an extraordinary linguistic faculty, which enabled him to use very many of them with ease, but he left little behind him in print or in manuscript. In the year 1864 ho printed privately some outline grammars or grammatical notes, and in 1866 phrase-books, and Vocabularies of Mahaga, Bauro, and Sesake, which have furnished material for the Melanesischen Sprachen of Von der Gabelentz. In the latter year also phrase-books were printed in some of the languages of the Banks' Islands. I have not taken these as the foundation for my own work. I never had the advantage of studying them with Bishop Patteson, and I know that he considered them imperfect and tentative. It seemed better to work independently on materials obtained directly from natives of Melanesia, and afterwards to compare my conclusions with those of the Bishop where the subjects were the same. Bishop Patteson, therefore, is not answerable for the general views concerning the Melanesian languages here put forward, nor for the structure and arrangement of the Grammars; but I can never forget that I owe any knowledge of these languages that I may possess to the impulse towards the study of them and to the direction which I received from him in the first instance; and I desire to make all that I have been able to do a memorial of gratitude and affection to him. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Language Study for New Guinea Students The third element in the population of New Guinea is the Melanesian. This can be shown to be immigrant, though the evidence lies outside the scope of this paper. It is found mostly on the islands and at odd points along the coast. Practically all the outlying islands are occupied by Melanesians, e.g. The Admiralty Is., New Hanover, New Ireland, and the bulk of New Britain. The interior of New Britain is occupied by people speaking non-melanesian languages, or languages only slightly in uenced by Melanesian. Such languages, e.g. The Baining, are called Papuan, but in this instance the term simply means non - Melanesian, for whereas the Melanesian languages do form Ultimately one family, those grouped under the term Papuan do not, and it would in fact be much better if the term Papuan languages were dropped and non Melanesian languages substituted - a more accurate, if somewhat longer description. It is disconcerting to the student to find languages on southern Bougainville, in the Solomon Islands, called Papuan, just because they are non-melanesian. The following chapters will give a sketch, firstly, of the phonetic bases of the New Guinea languages, and secondly, of the characteristics of each of the two great groups represented, the Papuan and the Melanesian.
