Book Synopsis The Roman Empire in Late Antiquity by : Hugh Elton
Download or read book The Roman Empire in Late Antiquity written by Hugh Elton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-22 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, Hugh Elton offers a detailed and up to date history of the last centuries of the Roman Empire. Beginning with the crisis of the third century, he covers the rise of Christianity, the key Church Councils, the fall of the West to the Barbarians, the Justinianic reconquest, and concludes with the twin wars against Persians and Arabs in the seventh century AD. Elton isolates two major themes that emerge in this period. He notes that a new form of decision-making was created, whereby committees debated civil, military, and religious matters before the emperor, who was the final arbiter. Elton also highlights the evolution of the relationship between aristocrats and the Empire, and provides new insights into the mechanics of administering the Empire, as well as frontier and military policies. Supported by primary documents and anecdotes, The Roman Empire in Late Antiquity is designed for use in undergraduate courses on late antiquity and early medieval history.

Download or read book Historical Studies in Late Roman Art and Archaeology written by ALAN. CAMERON and published by Peeters. This book was released on 2023-12-31 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alan Cameron (1938-2017) was one of the most remarkable and wide-ranging classical scholars of recent times. Beyond his central interests in the history and Latin and Greek literature of the later Roman empire, his scholarly work ranged from the Hellenistic age deep into the Byzantine period. But as Jas Elsner demonstrates in the introduction to this book, he also made a substantial contribution to the history of late Roman art. This collection was planned by Cameron himself, and brings together nineteen of his articles on late Roman art and archaeology written between the 1980s and 2017. Marked by Cameronâe(tm)s witty, accessible, and polemical style, they illustrate his developing views on the ivory diptychs of office holders, and offer fundamental discussions of silver plate, luxury manuscripts, gold glass, and sarcophagi. This book will be of interest not only to art historians, but to all specialists in the late Roman world.

This book was released on 2003 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume thirty new studies have been specially commissioned from scholars in seven countries to treat key texts and cultural phenomena from the Homeric age to the medieval period. A wide variety of critical approaches are employed to challenge orthodoxies and to present fresh perspectives on the literature, art and history of classical antiquity, late antiquity and the middle ages. Attractive features of the volume include the treatment of newly emerging areas of inquiry in addition to canonical texts and the representation of views of established international scholars at the forefront of the discipline. A recurrent motif of the volume emerges in the interpretive benefits of combining philological acumen with theoretical and intertextual considerations. This accessible and provocative book will be of interest to classicists, historians, art historians, students of comparative literature, and anyone concerned with the immense cultural legacy of classical Mediterranean civilisation. Greek and Latin quotations are accompanied by translations throughout.
Book Synopsis Greek Literature in Late Antiquity by : Dr Scott Fitzgerald Johnson
Download or read book Greek Literature in Late Antiquity written by Dr Scott Fitzgerald Johnson and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-06-28 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Late Antiquity has attracted a significant amount of attention in recent years. As a historical period it has thus far been defined by the transformation of Roman institutions, the emergence of distinct religious cultures (Jewish, Christian, Islamic), and the transmission of ancient knowledge to medieval and early modern Europe. Despite all this, the study of late antique literary culture is still in its infancy, especially for the Greek and other eastern texts examined in this volume. The contributions here presented make new inroads into a rich literature notable above all for its flexibility and unparalleled creativity in combining multiple languages and literary traditions. The authors and texts discussed include Philostratus, Eusebius of Caesarea, Nonnos of Panopolis, the important St Polyeuktos epigram, and numerous others. The volume makes use of a variety of interdisciplinary approaches in an attempt to provoke discussion on change (Dynamism), literary education (Didacticism), and reception studies (Classicism). The result is a study which highlights the erudition and literary sophistication characteristic of the period and brings questions of contextualization, linguistic association, and artistic imagination to bear on little-known or undervalued texts, without neglecting important evidence from material culture and social practices. With contributions by both established scholars and young innovators in the field of late antique studies, there is no work of comparable authority or scope currently available. This volume will stimulate further interest in a range of untapped texts from Late Antiquity.

Book Synopsis Christianity, Book-Burning and Censorship in Late Antiquity by : Dirk Rohmann
Download or read book Christianity, Book-Burning and Censorship in Late Antiquity written by Dirk Rohmann and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-07-25 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is estimated that only a small fraction, less than 1 per cent, of ancient literature has survived to the present day. The role of Christian authorities in the active suppression and destruction of books in Late Antiquity has received surprisingly little sustained consideration by academics. In an approach that presents evidence for the role played by Christian institutions, writers and saints, this book analyses a broad range of literary and legal sources, some of which have hitherto been little studied. Paying special attention to the problem of which genres and book types were likely to be targeted, the author argues that in addition to heretical, magical, astrological and anti-Christian books, other less obviously subversive categories of literature were also vulnerable to destruction, censorship or suppression through prohibition of the copying of manuscripts. These include texts from materialistic philosophical traditions, texts which were to become the basis for modern philosophy and science. This book examines how Christian authorities, theologians and ideologues suppressed ancient texts and associated ideas at a time of fundamental transformation in the late classical world.
Book Synopsis The Transition to Late Antiquity on the lower Danube by : Andrew Poulter
Download or read book The Transition to Late Antiquity on the lower Danube written by Andrew Poulter and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2019-09-30 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excavations on the site of this remarkable fort in northern Bulgaria (1996–2005) formed part of a long-term program of excavation and intensive field survey, aimed at tracing the economic as well as physical changes which mark the transition from the Roman Empire to the Middle Ages, a program that commenced with the excavation and full publication of the early Byzantine fortress/city of Nicopolis ad Istrum. The analysis of well-dated finds and their full publication provides a unique database for the late Roman period in the Balkans; they include metal-work, pottery (local and imported fine ware), glass, copper alloy finds, inscriptions and dipinti (on amphorae), as well as quantified environmental reports on animal, birds, and fish with specialist reports on the archaeobotanical material, glass analysis, and querns. The report also details the results of site-specific intensive survey, a new method developed for use in the rich farmland of the central Balkans. In addition, there is a detailed report on a most remarkable and well-preserved aqueduct, which employed the largest siphon ever discovered in the Roman Empire. This publication will provide a substantial database of material and environmental finds, an invaluable resource for the region and for the Roman Empire: material invaluable for studies, which seeks to place the late Roman urban and military identity within its regional and extra-regional economic setting.
Book Synopsis The Poetics of Late Latin Literature by : Jaś Elsner
Download or read book The Poetics of Late Latin Literature written by Jaś Elsner and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-11-18 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aesthetic changes in late Roman literature speak to the foundations of modern Western culture. The dawn of a modern way of being in the world, one that most Europeans and Americans would recognize as closely ancestral to their own, is to be found not in the distant antiquity of Greece nor in the golden age of a Roman empire that spanned the Mediterranean, but more fundamentally in the original and problematic fusion of Greco-Roman culture with a new and unexpected foreign element-the arrival of Christianity as an exclusive state religion. For a host of reasons, traditionalist scholarship has failed to give a full and positive account of the formal, aesthetic and religious transformations of ancient poetics in Late Antiquity. The Poetics of Late Latin Literature attempts to capture the excitement and vibrancy of the living ancient tradition reinventing itself in a new context in the hands of a series of great Latin writers mainly from the fourth and fifth centuries AD. A series of the most distinguished expert voices in later Latin poetry as well as some of the most exciting new scholars have been specially commissioned to write new papers for this volume.
