Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Church History The present volume is made up of a number of essays and reviews Which have already been published in the pages of The Catholic World. They are for the most part summaries of important volumes on Church History and synopses of important articles in some of the leading French encyclopedias. Many of the questions discussed in these pages are continually being asked, ' by earnest seekers after the truth, through the medium of the Question Box on the Paul ist missions to non-catholics. Out of many volumes of typewritten questions actually submitted during the past seventeen years I find the following. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Early Church History The period of which these studies treat extends from the time of Christ to the reign of Constantine, the first Christian Roman Emperor. This era has been called, The Heroic Age of the Church It was during these three hundred years that Christianity encountered the bitter hostility of the Roman and Greek religions and systems of philosophy and was under the ban of the civil power. It was then that it formulated its doctrines, set forth its principles, wrote its New Testament books and endured its fiery persecutions. In the enthusiasm and freshness of their faith, its converts dared all things; no tasks were too hard, no hardships too great and no tortures too painful, when called for in the name of Jesus Christ, the Lord and Saviour. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Modern Church History In placing this book in the hands of its publishers 1 hope to be regarded as showing my appreciation of the courtesy and kindness of the successive classes to which the lectures were delivered, in calling for their publication, as well as of the very gratifying manner in which this request was so re peatedly conveyed to me. I wish also in this way to indi cate the gratification I feel in recalling the gentlemanly bear ing of each class towards one whose only claim to their consideration was a sincere desire to be of service. The lectures were first delivered while Dr. T. J. Morgan was Professor of Church History in the Seminary; but chiefly since that important chair has been occupied by Dr. E. B. Hulbert. To both these gentlemen my thanks are due for the privilege of thus sharing with them in their work. It will not be improper, I trust, for me to speak of the special attention given by Dr. Hulbert to the department of church history treated of in these pages, and of the marked interest his students show in those aspects of historical Christianity which concern the church and the world as they now are. Under the leadership of President Northrup the Seminary is adapting its course of study in many ways to the peculiar needs of the present time, and in the particular here alluded to by no means least of all. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Early Church History Collected Papers The volume to which these pages are a preface contains such pieces of my published work down to the end of the year 1894 as it seemed possible and desirable to gather together into a single whole. It is an instalment of a series to which on my fiftieth birthday I resolved to devote myself. Tempus collectum est; my literary workshop was piled up with a number of undertakings in a more or less advanced stage of development, and it seemed an imperative duty to finish some of them off and clear them out of the way before anything further could legitimately be planned. It is easier to make such a resolution than to keep it to the letter; but in the result some half-dozen of these older ventures are now either in port or in sight of it. The first to arrive was a chapter on the Organization of the Church contributed to the Cambridge Medieval History. Next after that the present volume has been pushed forward, because I hold strongly that every scholar ought, at some time during his maturer life, to search and sift his own iuvenilia, and, if he determines that any parts of them are worth preserving, then to make the selection himself and himself to be responsible for the more permanent form which they are to take. Posthumous publication or republication of early writings is neither fair to the writer nor to his friends nor to the public. To the then editor of the Guardian (and a kindlier editor than Mr. D. C. Lathbury no young author ever served under) I believe that I owe the privilege of a first appearance in print; but reviews are seldom worth republishing, and from my own reviews in the Guardian the only salvage I should wish to secure are some suggestions which may perhaps one day find a place in a collection of 'Adversaria' on the textual criticism of the early Christian documents. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Church History, Vol. 2: Centuries IX.-XIV As for the barbarism so justly lamented when and where it did exist, blind injustice alone can ascribe it to the Catholic clergy, for they were always the first victims of the barbarians; their churches, libraries, and monasteries were sacked and burnt, the priests and monks often ruth lessly massacred. And how ungrateful is this charge, since it was this same Catholic clergy who transformed the devastating beasts into men and Christians, who repaired the damage inflicted, and preserved all of civilization that they themselves had not created. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Readings in Church History The purpose of the present work is not to increase the number of text-books or to intrude into the domain of the finished and elaborate treatises with which scholars are familiar, but by a series of pleasing and instructive studies to lead the general reader both to further research and to a deeper love for the Church of God. The sequence of time and of order has been observed, yet each chapter is so designed that perusal need not be continuous or con secutive. In these pages, as the master of history may find views expressed and interpretations given which will serve at least to support or to make known con elusions not popularly recognized, so may the beginner discover a completeness which, though rude, is still sufficiently suggestive to leave upon the mind a cor rect impression. XVIII No people have been more firm in their devotion to the Catholic faith than were the citizens of the venerable Vene tian Republic, while that state existed as an independent nationality. And nevertheless we are about to narrate an epi sode of Venetian history, which has but few parallels in the annals of rebellion and schism. The reader must know that the Republic of Venice was the first state to receive the de crees of the Council of Trent; and that as a token of his ap preciation of its promptitude, Pope Pius IV. Presented to La Serenissima, the magnificent palace in Rome yet styled di Venezia - a regal gift which elicited from the proud oligarchs the return present of the majestic palace Gritti in Venice, as a residence for the papal nuncios. But these interchanges of courtesy were by no means indicative of sterling sympathy between the political cabinets of Rome and Venice. Zealous as the Venetians had ever been in their attachment to Cath olic doctrine and to every Catholic custom, they had, from. This is followed by others on its founders and its making. These are succeeded by others on the teaching of Jesus as the standard of the church's living. In the second of these is embodied a discussion of what Jesus intended His church to be; and in a third an account of His passion as its foundation. There follow six chapters, three of which are occupied with Paul and three with John, the apostles being taken as specimens of the material Jesus used in building up His church. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eminent church historian and theologian Professor Williston Walker gives us an authoritative and scholarly account on the progress of the church founded by Christ, aptly titled A History of the Christian Church. First published in 1918, this edition has since gone on to become one of the classics in Christian literature. It examines various periods that led to the establishment of the church and how the Reformation came about in light of the preceding events. The author begins this volume with a discussion on the general situation before proceeding to talk about Judaism, the rise of Jesus and his disciples, the end of the apostolic era and the development of Christianity in the second century AD. From Gnosticism at the beginning of the book, he ends with the eventual transition to the modern situation, tackling various subjects such as English Unitarianism, Methodism, Catholicism, and even American Christianity - religious denominations and divisions which remain relevant to this day. The exhaustive nature of Professor Walker's work shows his expertise in the subject and the extent of the research he has done to produce a classic historical account of superb quality. Students of religious studies, as well as those seeking enlightenment on the development of the modern Christian church will benefit much from this clearly written and comprehensive opus. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Church, Vol. 1 of 3 It gives the translators great pleasure to be able to place within reach of the English-speaking community, and the student of theology, the classical text-book of Church History of the Rev. John alzoe, D.D., Professor of Theology at the University of Freiburg. The want of such a book has been long felt and much deplored bv scholars generally, and by educators in particular. These acknowledge that Church History is, for the theologian, not simply a very valuable aid, but rather an independent science, and the foundation of his other ecclesiastical studies; and that even the profane historian, the jurist, the statesman, the man of letters, the artist, the philosopher, can not, for evident reasons, dispense with it.
