Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Church Dedications, or England's Patron Saints, Vol. 1 of 3 The bond of association between our churches and the names of the saints is one that is very precious to many of us. Probably we are most of us agreed that London Cathedral would be a poor exchange for S. Paul's - that time-honoured dedication-name which enfolds twelve hundred years of history. The very sound of these names - S. Mary, S. Laurence, S. Cuthbert, and so forth - serves to call up visions of some much-loved church - whether in crowded city or in quiet village, whether venerable with age or newly built to meet the needs of to-day - churches differing widely from one another, yet alike in their purpose alike also in this, that they are stamped with the name of some saint of God. From the dawn of English Christianity up to the present day, the great majority of our churches, if not associated directly with one or all of the Persons of the Blessed Trinity, have been dedicated either to All Saints or All Angels collectively, or to the saints of Scripture. Dedica tions such as these meet us on every side, and demand no explanation. But the value of dedications does not lie merely in their obscurity or in their rarity, and there is, as we shall endeavour to show hereafter, much more to be learnt than might at first sight be supposed, from the propor tion and distribution of these commonest of dedication-names. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dedications Patron Saints of English Churches: Ecclesiastical Symbolism, Saints and Their Emblems This book should be pleasant to read, for it has been pleasant to write. It grew out of a perusal of Miss Arnold-Forster's Studies in Church Dedications (3 vols., Skeffington, 1899). Of this the third volume is composed of statistics, and gives the first and only complete list of saints commemorated in the dedications of English churches. These include modern as well as mediaeval dedications. It seemed worth while to strip off all dedications of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, leaving only those of more ancient date. The next step was to arrange these earlier dedications in order of frequency of occurrence, as a key to the respective popularity or unpopularity of the various saints. The results, both as to popularity and unpopularity, were so surprising that it was hardly possible not to pursue the inquiry further, and endeavour to ascertain how the old churchmen came to have such very different ideas from our own as to the merits or demerits of the saints. The inquiry turned out not to be easy, as may be judged from the long list of books in the bibliography (see below) which it was necessary to read and digest. Then some sort of order or system of arrangement had to be devised. It would not have been very profitable to discuss haphazard, just as they happened to occur in order of frequency, saints of such diverse characteristics as S. Andrew, S. Nicholas, S. Margaret, S. Helena, S. Thomas of Canterbury, and the rest; it would be to compare chalk with cheese. It was necessary to divide them up into various categories. Of these evidently the first category was of those saints whose biography, or part of it, appears in the New Testament. Even here the results of the order of merit, if it may be so termed, of the Biblical saints required considerable inquiry and discussion. How did it come about, for instance, that SS. Andrew and Matthew should have such overwhelming popularity as against other apostles and evangelists? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The calculated use of media by those in power is a phenomenon dating back at least to the seventeenth century, as Harold Weber demonstrates in this illuminating study of the relation of print culture to kingship under England's Charles II. Seventeenth-century London witnessed an enormous expansion of the print trade, and with this expansion came a revolutionary change in the relation between political authority -- especially the monarchy -- and the printed word. Weber argues that Charles' reign was characterized by a particularly fluid relationship between print and power. The press helped bring about both the deconsecration of divine monarchy and the formation of a new public sphere, but these processes did not result in the progressive decay of royal authority. Charles fashioned his own semiotics of power out of the political transformations that had turned his world upside down. By linking diverse and unusual topics -- the escape of Charles from Worcester, the royal ability to heal scrofula, the sexual escapades of the "merry monarch," and the trial and execution of Stephen College -- Weber reveals the means by which Charles took advantage of a print industry instrumental to the creation of a new dispensation of power, one in which the state dominates the individual through the supplementary relationship between signs and violence. Weber's study brings into sharp relief the conflicts involving public authority and printed discourse, social hierarchy and print culture, and authorial identity and responsibility -- conflicts that helped shape the modern state.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spiritually there is a great hunger today for contemplative and more satisfying experiences with God. Puritanism might seem to be an unlikely source for this, yet few groups in the history of Christian spirituality have written more extensively or wisely on the subject. Isaac Ambrose (1604-64), a relatively forgotten English Puritan, developed a theological foundation for the spiritual life based upon the Christian's intimate union with Christ, which the Puritans often called "spiritual marriage." Schwanda demonstrates that this vibrant relationship of union and communion with Jesus, inspired by the Holy Spirit, was manifested in a deep contemplative piety of gazing lovingly and gratefully upon God. At the same time, Ambrose did not neglect loving his neighbors. This study reveals how heavenly meditation was one of the significant practices engaged by Ambrose to cultivate spiritual intimacy and enjoyment of God. Further, his experiential reading of Scripture, in particular the Song of Songs, provided him with a language of ravishment and delight in God. This book provides a distinctively Protestant foundation for recovering the contemplative life while recognizing the significant contributions of the Western Catholic tradition.
