Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Chinese Life It is fitting that these chapters on Chinese life' should take the form ofa memorial volume to Mr. Grainger, for he was a man of methodical life and studious habits. During his first term of service when his mental powers were seemingly at their best, he laboured steadily on his western mandarin These studies prepared his mind for a companion volume. Which he hoped to de51gnate western customs (wfi Eff-13) For various reasons this volume never matured, but the chapters embodied in this book, and herewith given to the public, are the outcome of this early inspiration; and though, like the years of his life, they are incomplete, they represent the assiduous research of many years, and much painstaking labour to have them compiled and presented in their present form. The chapter on foodstuffs alone is well worth the price of the whole volume, and will no doubt prove of great value to all who have to purvey for large establishments or attend to the more delicate cuisine duties of the home. While we are happy to present these pages to the public it is with the regret that it is only a scanty portion of the knowledge he possessed, and it will be regretted by many that his peculiar knowledge of Chinese botanical subjects was not put into writing and reproduced for the benefit of the younger generations of missionaries. It is therefore with great pleasure that we recommend this little book to the careful study of all interested in Chinese life and things. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pagoda Shadows: Studies From Life in China HE conversion of China is the heaviest piece of work now left for the Church of Christ to do. No where else on the globe does there exist a compact or homogeneous population of anything like the same extent. The future Church of China will be in mere bulk the greatest branch ever known of the Church universal. But its importance will not be measured by its bulk alone. The Chinese are pretty sure to have a main part to play in the future of Asia. Those who possess the best acquaintance with the farther East, or are best able to forecast its probable development, are of opinion that this swarming Chinese stock, patient, industrious, frugal, ready to migrate, and able to thrive where others starve, is destined to be (next, perhaps, to the anglo-american) a predominant element in the lands that are washed by the Pacific Ocean. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chinese Life in the Tibetan Foothills These studies were never intended for public consumption, but for personal benefit and enlightenment and it was only at the request of several friends, coupled with the fear of permanent loss owing to the disturbed state of the country, that I was induced to submit them for publication. The object of the studies was to obtain the Chinese view point concerning the many mysterious customs and practices which perplexed me in daily inter course with this people. In order to attain this end two things have had to be rigorously guarded against - first, an adverse spirit of criticism, which closes up every avenue of information and second, the danger of being content when only personal curiosity is satisfied instead of trying to see things as the Chinese see them. It should be stated that no foreign text books have been studied questions of a scientific, ethnological and compara tive nature have been set aside in order to present the local view of the subject in hand. The writer does not claim to have fully attained his end or to have exhausted the inf orma tion obtainable on any given subject while variations may be found in almost every county II] the province, to say nothing of the whole of China. The little city of Kwan Hsien, which lies 40 miles to the north-west of Chengtu in the province of Szechuan, is the hub of The Tibetan Foothills. It was from this centre, so richly endowed with natural beauty, so famous for its ancient yet efficient irrigation system, so crowded with a teeming cosmopolitan population, that these pages were gradually compiled. The whole of the subject matter contained in this volume has passed through the pages of the New China Review, under the editorship of Mr. Samuel Gouling to whom I owe a great debt of gratitude for editing the ms. And correcting the proofs. If the printing, numbering and colour of paper should not be quite uniform all readers will kindly consider the difficulty under which the Editor has laboured while putting these papers through his magazine. The contents of this volume, though somewhat miscellaneous, are yet connected by a certain unity; falling naturally into three divisions, treating respectively of the education, philosophy, and letters of the Chinese - in a word, of their intellectual life. I call them Hanlin* Papers, not merely because the first three discuss educational processes which culminate in the Hanlin Academy, but more especially because the Hanlin is confessedly the highest embodiment of Chinese intellectual life. No one of these papers throws any light on your favorite field of research} and none of them pretends to be exhaustive of its special subject; they are offered to you and the public only as a bundle of Beitrage - a small contribution towards the better understanding of China and the Chinese. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Sport in China The British public is greatly handicapped in forming an intelligent appreciation of happenings in China by a lack of that initial experience which can only be gained by residence in the country. In this little work I have endeavoured to place before readers a sketch of things as I saw them, and to convey to their minds an idea of how Europeans live there, of their amusements, of their work, and of those things which are matters of daily interest to them, so that my book may serve as a kind of preface to that enthralling volume, the current history of China, as it is daily revealed in the press, in magazines and in learned works. While confining myself herein to the lighter side of narrative, I am not unconscious of those intricate problems and deep studies connected with the Far East, but to which profound research and matured judgment must be applied, though information there on, even when collected and published, would appeal mostly to the narrow circle of experts on matters Chinese. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amid early twentieth-century China’s epochal shifts, a vital and prolific commercial publishing industry emerged. Recruiting late Qing literati, foreign-trained academics, and recent graduates of the modernized school system to work as authors and editors, publishers produced textbooks, reference books, book series, and reprints of classical texts in large quantities at a significant profit. Work for major publishers provided a living to many Chinese intellectuals and offered them a platform to transform Chinese cultural life. In The Power of Print in Modern China, Robert Culp explores the world of commercial publishing to offer a new perspective on modern China’s cultural transformations. Culp examines China’s largest and most influential publishing companies—Commercial Press, Zhonghua Book Company, and World Book Company—during the late Qing and Republican periods and into the early years of the People’s Republic. He reconstructs editors’ cultural activities and work lives as a lens onto the role of intellectuals in cultural change. Examining China’s distinct modes of industrial publishing, Culp explains the emergence of the modern Chinese intellectual through commercial and industrial processes rather than solely through political revolution and social movements. An original account of Chinese intellectual and cultural history as well as global book history, The Power of Print in Modern China illuminates the production of new forms of knowledge and culture in the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Chinese Poets: Vignettes of Han Life and Thought In order to check on these various impressions I made a special study of Lu Chi's Wen F n (prose-poem on the Art of Letters) written in ad. 301-302. That study proved highly illuminating as to methods of approach to the classi cal literature: first, find a document of manageable propor tions, of certain authorship, certain date, and practically in dubitable text, and then follow where it leads. This conclu sion lies behind my book on the Wen F it published in 1951 (bollingen Series, No. Xx1x, New York, Pantheon Press). The next step was then clear. Two acknowledged masters of double-harness description of objects (m) were Pan Ku and Chang Heng, and within twenty to thirty years of each other they had composed their respective F n on the Two Capitals. Here were dateable documents by well-known au thors, the extant texts in most admirable condition. Further, the two authors had under contemplation the previous Han regime in contrast to their own. What more could an ideo logical historian want in the way of reliable and illuminating data? In this fashion I came to these special studies, came to write this book. Three considerations dominate its method: (1) to get at the texture of the minds of the two authors and their contemporaries; (2) placing the authors in the witness box as to Han beliefs and institutions, to estimate their reliability; (3) to explicate the particular matters on which they gave evidence. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Lord Shang was probably compiled sometime between 359 and 338 BCE. Along with the Han Fei-Tzu, it is one of the two principal sources of Legalism, a school of Chinese political thought. Legalism asserts that human behavior must be controlled through written law, rather than ritual, custom or ethics, because people are innately selfish and ignorant. The law is not effective when it is based on goodness or virtue; it is effective when it compels obedience. This is essential to preserve the stability of the State. Reprint of Volume XVII in Probsthain's Oriental Series. With a Chinese index and an index of names and references. "The Book of Lord Shang or Shang-tzu is said to consist of 29 paragraphs, of which the text for nos. 16, 21, 27, 28 and 29 being no longer extant. The translation of Prof. Duyvendak therefore covers only twenty-four paragraphs and is based on an edition published by Yang Wan-li in 1793, which was reprinted by the Ch -chiang-shu-ch in 1876 in the "Collection of Twenty-two Philosophers." Of all the editions published before or after that date, this is the best known. (...) The Chinese text of the Book, like many other ancient writings, is obscure in some parts and corrupt in others. (...) The reviewer is therefore forcibly struck by the faithfulness, definiteness and clearness of Dr. Duyvendak's translation." --13 Chinese Soc. & Pol. Sci. Rev. 459-460, 462 1929. J.J.L. Duyvendak 1889-1954] was an interpreter for the Dutch embassy in Peking from 1912-1918. In 1919 he became a lecturer in Chinese at the University of Leiden. He was the author of China's Discovery of Africa; Lectures Given at the University of London on January 22 and 23, 1947 (1949) and edited and translated several works, including The Diary of His Excellency Ching-shan; Being a Chinese Account of the Boxer Troubles by Shan Jing (1924). He established the Sinological Institute at the University of Leiden in 1930. It is now one of the leading libraries for Chinese Studies in the Western world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Occupying much of imperial China’s Yangzi River heartland and costing more than twenty million lives, the Taiping Rebellion (1851-64) was no ordinary peasant revolt. What most distinguished this dramatic upheaval from earlier rebellions were the spiritual beliefs of the rebels. The core of the Taiping faith focused on the belief that Shangdi, the high God of classical China, had chosen the Taiping leader, Hong Xiuquan, to establish his Heavenly Kingdom on Earth. How were the Taiping rebels, professing this new creed, able to mount their rebellion and recruit multitudes of followers in their sweep through the empire? Thomas Reilly argues that the Taiping faith, although kindled by Protestant sources, developed into a dynamic new Chinese religion whose conception of its sovereign deity challenged the legitimacy of the Chinese empire. The Taiping rebels denounced the divine pretensions of the imperial title and the sacred character of the imperial office as blasphemous usurpations of Shangdi’s title and position. In place of the imperial institution, the rebels called for restoration of the classical system of kingship. Previous rebellions had declared their contemporary dynasties corrupt and therefore in need of revival; the Taiping, by contrast, branded the entire imperial order blasphemous and in need of replacement. In this study, Reilly emphasizes the Christian elements of the Taiping faith, showing how Protestant missionaries built on earlier Catholic efforts to translate Christianity into a Chinese idiom. Prior studies of the rebellion have failed to appreciate how Hong Xiuquan’s interpretation of Christianity connected the Taiping faith to an imperial Chinese cultural and religious context. The Taiping Heavenly Kingdom shows how the Bible--in particular, a Chinese translation of the Old Testament--profoundly influenced Hong and his followers, leading them to understand the first three of the Ten Commandments as an indictment of the imperial order. The rebels thus sought to destroy imperial culture along with its institutions and Confucian underpinnings, all of which they regarded as blasphemous. Strongly iconoclastic, the Taiping followers smashed religious statues and imperially approved icons throughout the lands they conquered. By such actions the Taiping Rebellion transformed--at least for its followers but to some extent for all Chinese--how Chinese people thought about religion, the imperial title and office, and the entire traditional imperial and Confucian order. This book makes a major contribution to the study of the Taiping Rebellion and to our understanding of the ideology of both the rebels and the traditional imperial order they opposed. It will appeal to scholars in the fields of Chinese history, religion, and culture and of Christian theology and church history.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Overland to China The writer had made many journeys in China, north and south, during the past twenty years: had explored the southwest provinces and their border lands towards India; served through the French campaign in Tongking as correspondent of the Times; and, as recently as 1896 - 97, made a care ful study on thespot of the political and financial changes in progress in the Chinese capital, visiting also Japan. But the questions arising are both diverse and unexpected, while the general problems coming up for solution are SO complex and SO grave that even personal knowledge becomes obsolete, and it is impossible for the most earnest student of news papers and books to follow intelligently the progress of events without frequently renewing and extending his studies from the life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British in China: And Far Eastern Trade This book has been written in the hope of interesting the British and the Chinese in the development of the vast natural resources of China. It was commenced in the early days of the war; many Of the ideas set forth were thought out during the long night-watches on searchlight duty. Notes for the book have been jotted down in queer places and in various countries. Some were made on steamers off the China coast; others in a sedan chair in a Chinese city; one was written in the Forbidden City in Peking; and yet another in a Chinese gaming-house at Canton. A few are survivals of pre - war journeys in Siberia, the United States, and Canada. One was put down in Egypt, others in Europe, but the book was written in hong-kong. The self-imposed task has given me more pleasure than any other piece of work, not excluding scientific research, which I have been able to finish. In times of disappointment, after my day's work was over, there was always encouragement in the wonderful story of men of my own race in China, and I have turned to the task now ended for relief during those long absences from home life which are inevitable for those of us who live in the Far East. Perhaps the chief stimulus was the desire to record some facts which I want my three boys, now at school in England, to appreciate. For they spent with me many happy hours of their young lives in China, and I hope that some day they will be ready and eager to maintain the best traditions of their race. There have been, as always, difficulties. First of all, there was the groping for the desired information and finally the less exciting, indeed the distressing, duty of eliminating much of it. For in its original form the book was at least twice the Size of this volume; but it became Obvious, even to the author, that neither a sympathetic reader nor a kindly publisher could maintain an interest in such a long story.
