Es werden sowohl einzelsprachliche als auch sprachübergreifende Merkmale juristischer Kommunikation untersucht. Dabei werden auch kontrastive Aspekte einbezogen. Von besonderer Relevanz sind Fragen der Übersetzung normativer Texte, die für Situationen institutioneller Mehrsprachigkeit - wie sie in der Europäischen Union und in der Schweiz, aber auch in Grenzregionen bestehen - charakteristisch sind. Es werden theoretische und forschungsmethodische Fragen erörtert, die mit Konventionen und/oder Funktionen juristischer Texte und nicht zuletzt mit der Entwicklung fachkommunikativer Kompetenz in der akademischen Ausbildung zusammenhängen. Ein Großteil der Studien ist empirisch basiert. Viele Beiträge wurden beim 15. Europäischen Fachsprachensymposium (New Trends in Specialized Discourse, Universität Bergamo, 29. August-2. September 2005) präsentiert; diese wurden durch Arbeiten zu dort nicht behandelten Themen aus dem Bereich Sprache und Recht erweitert, so dass der Band ein breites Spektrum rechtslinguistischer Forschung repräsentiert.

The chapters in this volume draw on discourse-based data (narrative, documentary and interactional) to investigate the extent to which the 'integrity' of ADR principles is maintained in practice, and to what extent there is an increasing level of influence from litigative processes and procedures. The primary evidence for such practices comes from textual and discourse-based studies, ethnographic observations, and narratives of experience on the part of experts in the field, as well as on the part of some of the major corporate stakeholders drawn from commercial sectors.

This volume, which includes selected contributions from the Poznań Linguistic Meetings of 2003 and 2004, does not intend to present yet another model, but sets out to place the teaching and learning of English pronunciation in the context of the 21st century. As the needs of English users are clearly changing fast in the globalizing world, the question is to what extent, if at all, models of pronunciation have been able to keep up with them, and whether they in fact should do so. Thus, key issues in the integration of pronunciation into English as L2 curricula are explored.

Book excerpt: This empirical study examines the learning problem of the argument structure of psych predicates such as «The dog frightens John» and the related V-ing adjectives such as «The dog is frightening to John». The problem is theoretically interesting because of the marked nature of the thematic role mapping of these sentences in relation to the principle of the Uniformity of Theta Assignment Hypothesis (UTAH). The problem is highly relevant to our understanding of second language acquisition, as this is known to be a prevalent difficulty among language learners. The author has framed the learning problem within a coherent parametric framework drawing on a sophisticated critical review of the syntax/semantics literature and theories of L2 development. The author has specifically developed a theory, the «Semantic Salience Hierarchy Model» (SSHM), to explain the learning process. The significance of the model is not confined only to this particular study, as the issues related to the L2 acquisition of other causative verbs can also be examined within this model. The findings of this study also bear implications to TESOL.

In addition, in most cases data derive from specially-designed 'second-generation' corpora, reflecting state-of-the-art approaches to historical sociolinguistics and pragmatics.
