Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume on Qoheleth's vocabulary is the continuation of that on the grammar (OLA 41), published in 1992. All lexemes occurring in Qoh are examined for the specific connotations they have in this book. Chapter I deals with Biblical Hebrew words that are frequently and idiosyncratically used in Qoh. The subject of Chapter II are words that are less frequently used, yet can be considered to have some typical connotations in Qoh. Then follows in Chapter III the study of classical BH words that are less typical of Qoh, yet demand some attention. Chapter IV offers an analysis of the words that occur only in Qoh and in the last chapter, the reader finds short notes on the remaining words, those which require no special analysis. Throughout this monograph, attention is given to Late Biblical Hebrew, Aramaisms and Graecisms, in continuity with the grammatical studies in vol. I.

Book excerpt: In order to present the Aramean history during some six hundred years, down to the seventh century B.C., it was necessary to analyze a wide range of sources, mainly cuneiform, epigraphic, and biblical. Chapter I deals with Aramean pre-history and proto-history, while chapter II examines the question of the alleged relationship between the Hebrew forefathers and the ancient Arameans. Chapters III to XIV give a relatively accurate description of the territory of each historically attested Aramean group or state and present a detailed narrative of political events. Chapter XIV, the most extensive, considers the situation of the Arameans in Babylonia, also in relation to the Chaldeans and to the North-Arabian tribes. Chapters XV to XVIII deal with Aramean institutions, economy, legal practices, and religion. Special attention is paid to linguistic features of the available evidence, when they can help resolving historical questions. The book concludes with an extensive general index and with an index of biblical sources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of Canaan in the Iron Age is generally written from the perspective of the kingdoms of Israel and Judah. The scope of this book is to inverse this relation and to focus on "the skirts of Canaan", while regarding the "United Monarchy" and the "Divided Monarchy" as external and sometimes marginal players of the regional history. After having examined the transition from the Late Bronze Age to the Iron Age in the mid-12th century B.C., the book deals thus with the Philistines and the role of Egypt in Canaan during Iron Age II, especially in the face of the Assyrian expansion. It treats further of the Phoenicians and the Aramaeans. There follow five chapters on Bashan, Gilead, Ammon, Moab, and Edom with the Negeb. Several indices facilitate the consultation of the work on particular topics.

Book excerpt: This book is the twelfth volume in the series Altbabylonische Briefe in Umschrift und Übersetzung, which wants to make the many - often dispersed - letters from the Old Babylonian period available in transliteration and translation. Volume 12 is the first in a short series of hitherto unpublished material in the British Museum. Two more volumes are planned. Most of the new letters presented here belong to one collection and can be split up into several archives. Two of these are of particular interest: the texts dealing with the exploits of the judge Ipqu-Nabium (2 ff.) and the archives around the trader Sin-erībam (51 ff.). The latter contains the correspondence between the Sippar-based Sin-erībam and his agent Awīl-ilim. The texts deal with the textile trade between Babylonia and northern Mesopotamia and provide us with a 'missing link' between the trade in the north (known from old Assyrian texts) and the textile industry in Babylonia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the activities of a broad array of police officers in Ptolemaic Egypt (323–30 BC) and argues that Ptolemaic police officials enjoyed great autonomy, providing assistance to even the lowest levels of society when crimes were committed. Throughout the nearly 300 years of Ptolemaic rule, victims of crime in all areas of the Egyptian countryside called on local police officials to investigate crimes; hold trials; and arrest, question and sometimes even imprison wrongdoers. Drawing on a large body of textual evidence for the cultural, social and economic interactions between state and citizen, John Bauschatz demonstrates that the police system was efficient, effective, and largely independent of central government controls. No other law enforcement organization exhibiting such a degree of autonomy and flexibility appears in extant evidence from the rest of the Greco-Roman world.
