Book excerpt: There is a need to understand the factors correlating with teachers' instructional use of computers, because much of the present research focuses on students rather than teachers. This study examines several factors relating to the use of computers in the classroom by teachers. The factors examined include teacher attitudes, emotions, beliefs, and outside influences. This was done by a review of the present literature, administering two surveys, and analyzing the survey data. Questionnaires were distributed to faculty at five randomly selected high schools in a Midwest city participating in the study. Data from the survey was then examined to determine which factors correlate with teacher computer use in the classroom. The results of this study will help improve understanding of teachers' instructional computer use.

Book excerpt: Although U.S. public schools now boast an average of one computer to every 3.8 students, the statistics show that many teachers are not taking advantage of this technology to maximize student learning. While schools continue to invest millions in new computer technology, national research reports recommend improved professional development for teachers on integrating computers into curriculum. The purpose of this study was to identify differences between teachers who frequently integrate computers into curricular instruction and teachers who do not, in terms of how teachers believe students can use computers, the value that they believe computers can add to student learning, and the barriers that they perceive prevent them from integrating technology. A mixed methods study involving 106 third, fourth, and fifth grade teachers from a diverse school district in Orange County was used to gather data about teachers' beliefs and perceptions regarding student use of computers. Findings indicate significant differences between teachers who frequently integrate computers and other teachers, particularly in the values that they attribute to student use of computers and how they manage the school day to incorporate time for computer activities. The findings also show that perceived barriers to computer integration are similar for teachers who frequently integrate computers and those who do not. Implications include redesigning teacher professional development in technology to help teachers develop a vision of how integrated technology can look in the classroom and how it can benefit student learning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional education is no longer viable at the present time. In light of technological development and the adoption of a number of diverse technologies in the field of education, the student has become a vital element in learning through student-centered learning environments. Saudi universities are striving diligently to keep up with the technological development and the employment of modern trends in the educational process through the gradual merging of interactive learning methods or strategies, such as the flipped classroom, active learning, cooperative learning, etc. The flipped classroom plays an important role in enhancing the positive role of the learner during the educational process by providing the students with content before the lecture by the use of technology and exploiting class time in debates, problem-solving, creating, synthesizing, and applying. There are many various technology tools and online platforms that can be used in implementing the flipped classroom, such as Blackboard LMS, Google Docs, Wikis, blogs, Facebook, etc. Also, there are a number of advanced countries that have implemented flipped classrooms by the use of various technology tools and social platforms. For example, in Saudi Arabia, Al-Harbi & Alshumaimeri (2016) applied the flipped classroom approach by uploading videos on the Edmodo site. Therefore, this study focused on faculty members' experiences in using social media as a flipped classroom tool in Saudi Universities. The study addressed four main questions that focused on: faculty members' experiences in using social media in teaching in Saudi universities, faculty members' attitudes towards using social media in flipped classrooms, exploring how faculty members in Saudi universities use social media as a flipped classroom tool to address students' learning preferences per the R2D2 framework, and factors that prevent or limit Saudi faculty's social media uses in flipped classrooms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates the academic use of social media websites (SMS) by English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers and students in Saudi Arabia. The goal is to examine the type of communication that occurs between teachers and students, the purpose of teachers' academic use of social media, the academic benefits of social media, the challenges academic social media pose, and the opinions of teachers and students regarding academic use of social media. Two questionnaires were developed for the purpose of this study and posted online: one for teachers and one for students. The questionnaires were designed to investigate teachers' and students' academic use of social media and their opinions on the academic use of social media. The results of the study show major differences in use and perception exist between students and teachers. Students demonstrate a more open and accepting attitude towards the academic use of social media than teachers, who hesitate to use social media for academic purposes. They instead prefer to employ formal traditional methods of communications, which they believe to be a more professional way to communicate. In general, teachers and students do not share the same views about social media use in academia.
