Book excerpt: There is evidence that demonstrates the important role both parents and teachers play in the successful transition of children to middle school. While there is significant research into how both impact student success, there is a paucity of research into what teachers perceive parents believe are the expectations and concerns of their child as they transition to middle school. The purpose of this study was to use descriptive statistics obtained from surveys to explore what parents believed were the expectations and concerns of their child regarding the upcoming transition to middle school. Additionally, the study examined what teachers perceived parents believed their child's expectations and concerns were as they were about to transition to middle school. Finally, a comparison was done to find similarities and differences between the two groups. A survey was administered to 72 parents attending a new school orientation for incoming middle school students at a small rural school in Ohio. The same survey was administered to 16 middle school teaching staff members from the school the students would be attending. Parents and teachers identified both perceived academic and social concerns of children about to enter middle school. This included concerns such as getting good grades and having hard teachers as well as participating in social events and extracurricular activities. Both parents and teachers tended to have a holistic view of the identified items of excitement and worry concerning the transition to middle school. This indicated there was no major focus on overall academic or social concerns regarding the transition to middle school but rather a concern for the overall wellbeing of the student which is an important factor in establishing a successful school climate and dealing with the stresses faced by middle school students today.

Book excerpt: Students with Emotional and Behavioral Disabilities (EBD) frequently experience poor social and academic outcomes relative to their non-disabled peers. The middle to high school transition is a critical juncture in the educational process and can influence or impact high school and post- high school outcomes. This study sought to gain an understanding of the ways in which the current middle to high school transition process for students with EBD was being implemented. Additionally, literature was reviewed to reveal possible evidence-based practices which could lend support to the process. Seven teachers of middle school students with EBD were interviewed. Themes emerged related to communication and collaboration. Results revealed several components of the transition process that teachers believed to be of particular importance. These results are discussed and additional considerations to establish a successful transition process are explored.

Book excerpt: Post-secondary educational and employment outcomes for students with high- incidence disabilities continue to lag far behind their nondisabled peers. A carefully designed timeline including evidence-based transition skills and practices may serve as a guideline for teachers and parents as they prepare student /child with high-incidence disabilities for successful transition into adulthood. This project examined the importance and age/grade-appropriateness of skills/activities on a transition timeline, based on ratings by teacher and parent focus groups. Participants included eight secondary teachers with at least10 years experience, and five parents of children with high-incidence disabilities who graduated from both high school and post-secondary school. Thirteen individuals participated in separate focus groups consisting of (a) parents (n=5), (b) middle-school teachers (n=5), and (c) high school teachers (n=3). Focus groups rated items on a scale of 1-4 for both importance and age/grade-appropriateness, then discussed each item. Data were analyzed based on median and range scores for each item, and the items were rank ordered according to importance and age/grade-appropriateness to produce a timeline of transition skills/activities for both parents and teachers. A final survey was given to participants to validate the timeline as a valuable resource to guide both parents and teachers.

Book excerpt: This qualitative case study was designed to discover fifth and sixth grade teachers' and administrators' perceptions related to the middle school transition process relative to the academic, social, and organizational needs of students in a large, suburban school district in Pennsylvania. The participants were teachers of the core academic areas, encore subject teachers, counselors, and administrators at both the elementary and middle school levels. This research examined the results based upon the responses of 48 fifth grade teachers from ten elementary schools, 62 sixth grade teachers from two middle schools, and nine administrators from both elementary and middle schools who completed an online instrument - Perceptions of Transition Survey (POTS). The teacher and administrator POTS survey contained phrases that measured the extent to which they believe students will look forward to, may be worried about, and open-ended questions designed to obtain further teacher and administrator insight regarding the transition to middle school. Results of the study indicated all three groups (5th grade teachers, 6th grade teachers, and administrators) identified student social and academic issues as the defining characteristics of middle school transition. Identifying the consistent and inconsistent messages of school staff members across elementary and middle school buildings may guide future research as school districts strive to provide students with a successful foundation form middle school transitions.

The research design was a multi-site, mixed methods case study of two suburban districts with single 6-8th grade middle schools feeding a single high school. Academic issues explored student concern about harder classes, homework, grades, more teachers, preparation for college, and preparation for life. Procedural issues included concerns about the size of the school, getting lost, getting to class on time, school rules, and expectations. Social issues covered included safety, sense of belonging, fitting in, bullying and freedom. The conceptual framework for this study was based on a study of elementary to middle school transition by Akos and Galassi (2004) which grouped transition issues into three components: academic, procedural and social. This study examined how these same issues are related to the transition at a secondary school level.
