Book excerpt: Legislation supports the academic, social , emotional, and behavioral needs of individuals with disabilities. Science organizations strive to provide educators the opportunities to promote science education. An average rate of 57.2% of seventh grade students with disabilities at Troy Middle School (TMS) of Plainfield, Illinois, did not meet Illinois State Board of Education standards on the science Illinois State Achievement Test during eight out of ten years between 2002 and 2012. A quantitative, descriptive online survey was designed and administered to collect responses form 35 seventh grade TMS students with disabilities on what motivates them to be successful in science achievement. The results of the survey concluded that these students received more motivational support from parents than their science and special education teachers. In addition these students believe their science teachers taught a sufficient amount of science literacy skills did not believe their science teachers taught a sufficient amount of science literacy skills or promoted science careers. The development of positive emotional and intellectual connections with the outside world helps student with disabilities to be active participants in science classroom so that they can be highly motivated and successful in science achievement.

Book excerpt: The study of students’ motivational beliefs about writing and how such beliefs influence writing has increased since the publication of John Hays’ 1996 model of writing. This model emphasized that writers’ motivational beliefs influence how and what they write. Likewise, increased attention has been devoted in recent years to how teachers’ motivational beliefs about writing, especially their efficacy to teach writing, impact how writing is taught and how students’ progress as writers. As a result, there is a need to bring together, in a Research Topic, studies that examine the role and influence of writing beliefs. Historically, the psychological study of writing has focused on what students’ write or the processes they apply when writing. Equally important, but investigated less often, are studies examining how writing is taught and how teachers’ efforts contribute to students’ writing. What has been less prominent in the psychological study of writing are the underlying motivational beliefs that drive (or inhibit) students’ writing or serve as catalysts for teachers’ actions in the classroom when teaching writing. This Research Topic will bring together studies that examine both students’ and teachers’ motivational beliefs about teaching writing. This will include studies examining the operation of such beliefs, how they develop, cognitive and affective correlates, how writing motivational beliefs can be fostered, and how they are related to students’ writing achievement. By focusing on both students’ and teachers’ beliefs, the Research Topic will provide a more nuanced and broader picture of the role of motivation beliefs in writing and writing instruction. This Research Topic includes papers that address students’ motivational beliefs about writing, teachers’ motivational beliefs about writing or teaching writing. Students’ motivational beliefs about writing include: • beliefs about the value and utility of writing, • writing competence, • attitudes toward writing, • goal orientation, • motives for writing, • identity, • epistemological underpinnings writing, • and attributions for success/failure (as examples). Teacher motivational include these same judgements as well as beliefs about their preparation and their students’ competence and progress as writers (to provide additional examples). This Research Topic is interested in papers that examine how such beliefs operate, develop, are related to other cognitive and affective variables, how they are impacted by instruction, and how they are related to students’ writing performance. Submitted studies can include original research (both quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-methods), meta-analysis, and reviews of the literature.

Book excerpt: Some informal discussions among educators regarding motivation of students and academic performance have included the topic of magnet schools. The premise is that a focused theme, such as an aspect of science, positively affects student motivation and academic achievement. However, there is limited research involving magnet schools and their influence on student motivation and academic performance. This study provides empirical data for the discussion about magnet schools influence on motivation and academic ability. This study utilized path analysis in a structural equation modeling framework to simultaneously investigate the relationships between demographic exogenous independent variables, the independent variable of attending a science or technology magnet middle school, and the dependent variables of motivation to learn science and academic achievement in science. Due to the categorical nature of the variables, Bayesian statistical analysis was used to calculate the path coefficients and the standardized effects for each relationship in the model. The coefficients of determination were calculated to determine the amount of variance each path explained. Only five of 21 paths had statistical significance. Only one of the five statistically significant paths (Attended Magnet School to Motivation to Learn Science) explained a noteworthy amount (45.8%) of the variance.

Book excerpt: Increased use of technology in the classroom has the potential of helping students shift from the role of passive learners to engaged participants in their own learning. The purpose of this study was to determine if the use of technology tools in 7th and 8th grade science activities would increase student motivation and understanding of science. The literature review found that, when used effectively, technology can have a profound impact on learning and student's understanding of content can increase. This study used both quantitative and qualitative research methods, in addition to incorporated action research to inform classroom decisions about the benefits of using technology. Student survey responses provided insight into the types of technology-based activities students perceived best supported their learning, and the types of activities they felt increased their motivation. Student interviews and pre-and post-assessments were analyzed to determine if student understanding of science content increased due to the use of technology-based activities. The findings determined that students preferred interactive technology activities where they could share their ideas with their classmates. Students agreed that the technology tools they used in science were exciting and the best learning experiences utilized computers or technology. As a result of participation in inquiry-based technology activities, findings for 7th grade students indicated there was no significant increase in science content knowledge; however, the 8th grade findings showed a significant gain in content knowledge. To broaden the scope of this research, it is suggested that future studies be conducted on the impact technology has on student achievement and attitudes toward learning science.
