From an exploration of rap music to an analysis of how the academy presents and markets itself on the World Wide Web, the essays focus attention on higher education issues that are bound up in the workings and effects of popular culture.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvard College, the Class of 1876: Seventh Report of the Secretary, Covering the Class History for Twenty-Five Years to 1901 Entering only three years after the accession of President Eliot, we found his energy at work building a new superstructure upon the old foundation. During Freshman year we were per mitted to pursue our required studies with our minds unfretted by the necessity of choosing for ourselves, but the three succeeding years com pelled us to get out of leading strings. We were given a broad choice of elective studies; our at tendance at our courses was made voluntary. As is well known, this liberal system has, with cer tain wise regulations, been made still more lib eral, and its principles have, through the changes in the entrance requirements, been extended into the secondary schools. The general principle has been adopted by the College that a Bachelor's de gree is necessary for admission to all professional courses of study. This makes it important that the conditions for admission to the College or Scientific School shall be liberally conceived. Mr. W. C. Lane, in the Report of the Class of says: The requirements of 1881 al low the substitution in the place of Greek of a considerable amount of scientific study, including some advanced mathematics, but do not al low the substitution of any modern language or of history. Japanese students may substitute an examination in the Japanese language and litera ture for English, in the Chinese language and literature for elementary Greek, and in English for elementary Latin; while students and grad nates of the Imperial University of Japan might be admitted without examination. Our young Roman of the East, the Japanese, as well as his American fellow-student, can, if he chooses, do the work required for a degree in three years. Some of the old leisure classes took five or six years in their pursuit of an ever evading degree. It is even planned to have two Commencements a year. Since the prohibition of rum punch, two such days may safely be per mitted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Student-Life at Harvard The object of the book now in the reader's hands is to give a faithful picture of student life at Harvard University, as it appeared to undergraduates there rather more than half a score of years ago; the story following for this purpose the fortunes of the hero, from his examination for admission to the Freshman class, through the succeeding four years. Having had this object in view, the author trusts that no apology will be necessary for the expressions of opinion which the characters make, nor for the freedom of speech which they are allowed in these pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps more than any other two colleges, Harvard and Yale gave form to American intercollegiate athletics--a form that was inspired by the Oxford-Cambridge rivalry overseas, and that was imitated by colleges and universities throughout the United States. Focusing on the influence of these prestigious eastern institutions, this fascinating study traces the origins and development of intercollegiate athletics in America from the mid-nineteenth century to the early twentieth century. Smith begins with an historical overview of intercollegiate athletics and details the evolution of individual sports--crew, baseball, track and field, and especially football. Then, skillfully setting various sports events in their broader social and cultural contexts, Smith goes on to discuss many important issues that are still relevant today: student-faculty competition for institutional athletic control; the impact of the professional coach on big-time athletics; the false concept of amateurism in college athletics; and controversies over eligibility rules. He also reveals how the debates over brutality and ethics created the need for a central organizing body, the National Collegiate Athletic Association, which still runs college sports today. Sprinkled throughout with spicy sports anecdotes, from the Thanksgiving Day Princeton-Yale football game that drew record crowds in the 1890s to a meeting with President Theodore Roosevelt on football violence, this lively, in-depth investigation will appeal to serious sports buffs as well as to anyone interested in American social and cultural history.
