Book Synopsis St. Joseph's College by : Kenneth Munro
Download or read book St. Joseph's College written by Kenneth Munro and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2015 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Archbishop Henry O’Leary became the second archbishop of Edmonton in 1920, he had a dream to build a western Canada Catholic college that would educate students in the Christian intellectual tradition. This is the story of how a small Roman Catholic institution confronted daunting challenges to become a Christian beacon of enlightenment at the very heart of the secular University of Alberta. Scholarship and community life in residence was always supplemented with teaching from the Christian Ministry Team, to form Christian citizens who would go out into the world to serve the larger community following graduation. In 1963, the Congregation of St. Basil took over the administration of the College from the Christian Brothers de la Salle who had administered the College from its founding in 1926. Since its establishment almost ninety years ago, the College has continued to provide young men and women with post-secondary courses grounded in Roman Catholic thought while pursuing their undergraduate degrees at the University of Alberta. Initially, a residence was built for men, but O’Leary’s dream of also constructing a women’s residence never died and was finally realized in 2015. Faced with slender means, misunderstandings, student mischief and personality clashes, the mission of St. Joseph’s College has guided faculty, administrators, staff and Board members throughout its history and melded them into a close-knit community whose example is the envy of other units at the University of Alberta.

Book Synopsis School Handbooks by : Mary Angela Shaughnessy
Download or read book School Handbooks written by Mary Angela Shaughnessy and published by National Catholic Education Assn. This book was released on 2002 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: School handbooks contain the policies and procedures for which school community members are responsible. Developing and writing them, however, is a formidable task for any Catholic school administrator in this era of legal and moral accountability to entities ranging from state educational authorities to diocesan officials to pastors in parish schools. Yet, they are instruments that aid all members of the school community in the realization of the school's mission and ministry. This booklet provides an introduction to the laws affecting the administration of Catholic schools and offers specific guidance concerning the contents and wording of faculty, parent/student, and board handbooks. Six chapters include: (1) "Catholic Education and Civil Law"; (2) "Negligence"; (3)"Principles of Handbook Preparation"; (4) "Faculty Handbooks"; (5) "Parent/Student Handbooks"; and (6) "Board Handbooks." Although administrators may be discouraged when confronted with the writing of handbooks in addition to the already demanding tasks of school administration, well-written, legally sound handbooks can do much to ensure the smooth operation of Catholic schools. The booklet concludes with a glossary and bibliography. (Contains 22 references.) (RT)

Book excerpt: Since a deadly virus and the violence that followed wiped out his parents and most of his community, Finn has lived alone on the rugged coast with only his loyal dog Rowdy for company. He has stayed alive for two winters—hunting and fishing and trading food, and keeping out of sight of the Wilders, an armed and dangerous gang that controls the north, led by a ruthless man named Ramage. But Finn’s isolation is shattered when a girl runs onto the beach. Rose is a Siley—an asylum seeker—and she has escaped from Ramage, who had enslaved her and her younger sister, Kas. Rose is desperate, sick, and needs Finn’s help. Kas is still missing somewhere out in the bush. And Ramage wants the girls back—at any cost. ‘Tense and atmospheric...Mark Smith’s debut is assured, gripping and leaves you wanting more.’ Best Books for Younger Readers 2016, Sydney Morning Herald ‘It’s easy to see why Mark Smith’s dystopian thriller has been compared with John Marsden’s Tomorrow When the War Began. So strap yourself in for a high action ride.’ Kids Book Review ‘A riveting story of survival that questions the prices of freedom and safety as well as the value of an individual life...A breakout new series full of romance, danger, and a surprisingly engaging world.’ STARRED Review, Kirkus Reviews ‘A solid debut.’ Publishers Weekly ‘It’s been suggested more than once that dystopian fiction has had its day...but The Road to Winter is a welcome sign that there’s still life in the genre.’ Armadillo
