Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a cognitive-behavioral approach to help readers learn a strategy for eliminating their self-defeating behaviors. It allows readers to move logically through a complete system for eliminating such behaviors. Unit 1 presents an introduction to the book and explains how to use it. It is recommended that readers read the text and attempt the activities from Units 2 through 6 in the order in which they are presented. Suggestions are given for use of the book by individuals, participants in Eliminating Self-Defeating Behaviors (ESDB) System workshops, students, counselors, and trainers of employees in business and industry. For ESDB workshops, a six-session workshop schedule is recommended. Unit 2 deals with the SDB (self-defeating behaviors) circle, Unit 3 describes the Thoughts Exit, Unit 4 explains the Actions Exit, and Unit 5 discusses the Feelings Exit. The final unit directs the reader toward self-enhancing behaviors. ESBD strategies are reviewed, ESBD strategies for self-enhancing behavior are identified, and places where readers can turn for help are provided. Throughout each unit, sample activities are presented as they have been completed by two fictitious people who have tried to eliminate their self-defeating behaviors by using the book. These sample activities follow each activity that the reader is to complete and are presented as models or examples. (NB)

Book excerpt: The real story behind “ex-gay” ministries and reparative therapy! Nationally known activist Wayne Besen spent four years examining the phenomenon of “ex-gay” ministries and reparative therapies—interviewing leaders, attending conferences, and visiting ministries undercover as he accumulated hundreds of hours of research. The result is Anything but Straight: Unmasking the Scandals and Lies Behind the Ex-Gay Myth, a groundbreaking exposé of the controversial movement that's revered by independent religious groups and reviled by gay and lesbian organizations. The book presents a historical perspective on the dispute, examining “ex-gay” groups such as Love In Action, Exodus International, Homosexuals Anonymous, and profiling a cast of characters that includes Pat Robertson, the Rev. Jerry Falwell, “ex-gay” poster boy John Paulk, National Association of Research and Therapy of Homosexuality activist Richard Cohen, and psychiatrist Dr. Robert Spitzer. An in-depth, well-researched, and historically significant account, Anything but Straight is full of startling facts and alarming surprises. The original content and novel material in the book includes: a first-ever comprehensive history of the “ex-gay” ministries and “reparative therapy” the inside story of the night the author photographed “ex-gay” poster boy John Paulk inside a gay bar the author's discovery that Anne Paulk lied about being a lesbian and has admitted to having a strong attraction to men BEFORE she became “ex-gay” previously undisclosed bizarre techniques used by the “ex-gay” ministries and “reparative therapists” the author's exclusive in-depth interviews with leading “ex-gay” leaders—they disclose their deepest secrets, hidden desires, and true motivations an extraordinary new study that shows that most “ex-gay” leaders have suffered from substance abuse or severe emotional problems—while many “ex-gay” leaders claim they were “unhappy being gay,” this report helps prove that their dissatisfactions came not from their homosexuality, but from poor life choices and irresponsible behavior new revelations that one of the nation's leading “reparative therapists” hailed from a secretive cult that was scandalized for practicing nude therapy From the author: Through my extensive experience, I have learned that the extraordinary claims made by the “ex-gay” groups are without merit and the efficacy of their programs is dubious at best and harmful at worst . . . One frequent question I get is, “Why can't gay activists simply leave 'ex-gay' groups alone and let them go about their business?” This is exactly what happened for nearly three decades while “ex-gay” groups labored in near anonymity. But all this recently changed when the “ex-gay” groups intricately aligned themselves with the anti-gay political agenda of the Religious Right. With “ex-gays” added to their arsenal, the Right could disingenuously claim to love gay people and offer them “hope for change,” while simultaneously fighting for punitive legislation. Their insidious message: Since gays and lesbians can change, there is no need for laws that protect them against arbitrary prejudice. Anything but Straight: Unmasking the Scandals and Lies Behind the Ex-Gay Myth is an essential read for activists on both sides of the “ex-gay” fence, family members of gays and lesbians, Gay, Bisexual, Lesbian, and Transgender church members, psychiatric and social science professionals, and anyone who has dealt with “coming out” issues. An appendix of resources and a helpful bibliography make it easy to find additional information on this fascinating topic.

It clearly presents a model of the elements of a work system, and summarizes theories that explain how organizations function and how managers work within the work system. It also describes how to recognize and solve both communication and organization problems. Furthermore, the volume analyzes various processes that occur in the work system, such as disseminating and retrieving information, energizing employees to work smarter, using power and empowering others, facilitating groups and work teams, managing conflict and stress, and how to manage knowledge in the organization, among others. The book describes some of the most likely careers that graduates might enter upon graduation. It also highlights a variety of explanations of organization theory, management theory, culture theory, postmodern theory and critical theory so that the full range of ideas about communication and the places where people work and interact are explored.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nanoscience is an interdisciplinary field that have encompassed physics, biology, engineering chemistry and computer science, among others, the prefix nano appears with increasing frequency in scientific journals and the news. Thus, as we increase our ability to fabricate computer chips with smaller features and improve our ability to cure disease at the molecular level, nanotechnology is at the doorstep. Scientists and engineers believe that the fabrication of nanomachines, nanoelectronics, and other nanodevices will help to sole numerous problems faced by mankind today related to energy, health, and materials development. In nanoelectronics there are two opposing developments: the lithographic scaling down of semiconductor components tending towards the sub10 nanometer region to supramolecular self assembling macroscopic structure with new properties. Currently the trends are mixed and one can build a variety of structures of all scales. For example one can build large scale supramolecular structures serving as templates for building circuits with nanoscale components. On the nanoelectronics architecture side, there have also been many interesting developments trying to cope with the increasing density and smallness of components and the needs of self assembly and fault tolerance. In the emerging field of nanotechnology, the production of nanostructures having special physical and chemical properties with respect to those of bulk materials is an objective due to their limited size and high density of corner or edge surface sites. Metal nanoparticles have received significant scientific and technological interest because of their use in applications such as catalysis, electronics, optics, optoelectronics, biological and chemical sensing and SERS. Nanotechnology is now creating a growing sense of excitement in the life sciences, especially biomedical devices and biotechnology, as there is an immense opportunity to arrange and rearrange molecular structures. The global market for nanotechnology products is worth an estimated compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.1% from 2010 to 2015. The largest segment of the market, made up of nanomaterials, is expected to increase at a 5 year CAGR of 14.7%. The book contains polymeric nanofibres, synthesis of nanostructure, analysis of electron currents through nanojunctions, water soluble carbon nanotubes, nanoelectronic switching networks, growth of silica nanorods, magnetic nanostructures, nanomachining of microscope tips and carbon nanotubes, nanocrystalline semiconductors and many more. The present book is a sincere attempt to make the readers aware of the evolutionary trends underlying modern engineering practice which are grounded not only on the tried & true principles & techniques of the past, but also on more recent & current advances. This book will be an invaluable resource to technocrats, researches new entrepreneurs, technical institutions & introduction to this field.
