Furthermore, findings from this study will be used to inform decisions made in future grade level implementations. Standards-based grading meets all criteria for a problem of practice. The literature situates standards-based grading as a high impact strategy that can affect the entire system. This mixed-methods study will be used to determine practical changes for a school implementing standards-based grading. This study found parents positively responded to the change, and parents understood their child's current performance levels. Teachers also positively responded to the change, but had a much larger change involved. The study specifically found that better tools and assessments were needed to successfully implement the program. Suggestions for practitioners and modifications to the program are included in the study.

Book excerpt: Standards that determine what teachers are required to teach have been changing rapidly, however the grading systems that teachers use to evaluate a student's progress towards these standards have remained stagnant. This research project evaluated current grading practices and standards based grading to decide which was the most equitable grading system and why. This was a quantitative study to find student perspectives on grading, and compare the two systems. Quantitative data was collected by administering a survey to 176 sixth and seventh grade students in one dual-language science classroom. Quantitative data was also collected by implementing both grading systems in two seventh grade classes with 71 students, and comparing the number of students in each grade category . The data collected revealed that students have the perception that grading in school is not fair, and their grades do not match their understanding of the material taught. The data also showed that students are much more successful when standards based grading is used. Implications of these results would be that current grading systems are inequitable, and in order to make schools more equitable and allow students to be more successful, standards based grading should be used. This will add to the current research by providing data on how standards based grading is beneficial to dual-language classrooms.

The study focused on perceptions of central office administrators (1), building administrators (5), and teachers (65 from grades 6-12) who had been using a standards-based grading and reporting system for several years or were in the first year of implementation. Four research questions guided this qualitative study, and data were collected using three instruments: a survey, an open-ended questionnaire, and individual interviews. Results revealed the ability of standards-based grading to clearly identify students' strengths and weaknesses, allowing for adaptations to curriculum, instruction, and assessments according to student needs. Additionally, teachers changed some instructional practices to enhance student achievement and varied reporting methods to communicate student mastery within a standards-based system. Furthermore, time was essential for professional development, education of stakeholders, technology training, and for conversations about differences in philosophies pertaining to standards-based grading. Finally, participants agreed that the current traditional grading system did not adequately communicate student mastery; however, concerns were raised about the lack of support and congruence of the computerized grading program, lack of parental knowledge about standards-based grading, and lack of time to properly implement a standards-based system.

Eighteen of my fifth-grade mathematics students participated in the study which lasted two weeks. Three exemplar students, based on my observations, were interviewed during this mathematics unit to determine their perceptions of feedback in the form of standards-based grading methods. During the interview process, I asked students questions pertaining to their understanding of standards-based grading, which was new to the class, as well as comparative questions relating to traditional grades. The goal of this research was to determine the readiness of students in the event of a switch in district grading policies. I found a switch like this, while meaningful, needs much ground work in place before implementation.
