Book excerpt: So what's middle age anyway except a state of mind that some struggle to get through and overcome. Here's a collection of poems that deals with the everything that come with it. The book opens with: STRUMMING THROUGH MIDDLE AGE. Strumming as in humming, humming as in thumbing, thumbing as in reclining through life without the will to sit up. Passing shapes, passing figures, stick figures, strumming by, running by. Running? Really running, not strumming. Man on your left, lady on your right, running. Gone today, gone tomorrow. Whose strumming now? Me, you, him? Whose humming, me, you, him? Whose doing anything? Me, you, him? Who cares, don't care, fail to care. So strumming, running, humming, strumming, through, life, and, failing to care, bare, or witness the stare, failing to care and strumming.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the role of music in the some five hundred feature-length films on the Middle Ages produced between the late 1890s and the present day. Haines focuses on the tension in these films between the surviving evidence for medieval music and the idiomatic tradition of cinematic music. The latter is taken broadly as any musical sound occurring in a film, from the clang of a bell off-screen to a minstrel singing his song. Medieval film music must be considered in the broader historical context of pre-cinematic medievalisms and of medievalist cinema’s main development in the course of the twentieth century as an American appropriation of European culture. The book treats six pervasive moments that define the genre of medieval film: the church-tower bell, the trumpet fanfare or horn call, the music of banquets and courts, the singing minstrel, performances of Gregorian chant, and the music that accompanies horse-riding knights, with each chapter visiting representative films as case studies. These six signal musical moments, that create a fundamental visual-aural core central to making a film feel medieval to modern audiences, originate in medievalist works predating cinema by some three centuries.

Book excerpt: Edward Frederic Benson (1867-1940) was an English novelist, biographer, memoirist, archaeologist and short story writer, known professionally as E.F. Benson. He started his novel writing career in 1893 with the fashionably controversial Dodo, which was an instant success, and followed it with a variety of satire and romantic and supernatural melodrama. He repeated the success of Dodo, with sequels to this novel, but the greatest success came relatively late in his career with The Mapp and Lucia series consisting of six novels and two short stories. The novels feature humorous incidents in the lives of (mainly) upper-middle-class British people in the 1920s and 1930s, vying for social prestige and one-upmanship in an atmosphere of extreme cultural snobbery. Benson was also known as a writer of atmospheric, oblique, and at times humorous or satirical ghost stories. This edition includes: Make Way For Lucia: Queen Lucia Miss Mapp Dodo Trilogy: Dodo: A Detail of the Day Dodo's Daughter or Dodo the Second Dodo Wonders David Blaize Series: David Blaize David Blaize and the Blue Door Other Novels: The Rubicon The Judgement Books The Vintage Mammon and Co. Scarlet and Hyssop The Relentless City The Valkyries The Angel of Pain The House of Defence The Blotting Book Daisy's Aunt Mrs. Ames Thorley Weir Arundel Michael Up and Down Across the Stream Short Story Collections: The Room in the Tower, and Other Stories The Countess of Lowndes Square, and Other Stories Historical Work: Crescent and Iron Cross

Obscure lords and long-forgotten battles. So the image goes. Yet some of these same plays tell superb stories, and contain scenes and characters that are among the liveliest and most memorable in all literature. Here, four of the very best, Richard the Second, Henry the Fourth Parts One and Two, and Henry the Fifth are presented as 'productions for the page'-consecutive stories for the modern reader. Be bemused no longer by endless kings, dukes and earls, acting out their arguments in iambic verse. Follow instead, as if in the midst of events, Shakespeare's masterly unfolding of a classic pattern of revolution, suppression of enemies, and conquest abroad.

Suddenly the youth of the richest, most powerful nation on earth was trying to emulate the music, manners and the modes of a rainy island that had recently fallen on hard times. The resulting fusion of American can-do and British fuck-you didn’t just lead to rock and roll’s most resonant music. It ushered in a golden era when a generation of kids born in ration card Britain, who had grown up with their nose pressed against the window of America’s plenty, were invited to wallow in their big neighbour’s largesse. It deals with a time when everything that was being done - from the Beatles playing Shea Stadium to the Rolling Stones at Altamont, from the Who performing their rock opera at the Metropolitan Opera House to David Bowie touching down in the USA for the first time with a couple of gowns in his luggage - was being done for the very first time. Rock and roll would never be quite so exciting again.
