Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The continental margins of the world constitute the most impressive and largest physiographic feature of the earth's surface, and one of fundamentally great geological significance. Continental margins have been the subject of increasing attention in recent years, an interest focused by a body of new data that has provided new insights into their character. This interest was further stimulated by the realization that, in addition to the abundant living resources, continental margins contain petroleum and mineral resources that are accessible with existing technology. This realization, along with their basic geological importance, has provoked further research into the nature of continental margins throughout the world. A summary of these findings, as related to both recent and ancient continental margins, is the subject of this book. At various times in the past we had been approached individually to prepare a basic reference to continental margins; we then proposed to do such a volume jointly. However, the stimulus for the present volume eventually arose from a Penrose Conference arranged through the Geological Society of America. This conference was attended by specialists of numerous disciplines and from throughout the world, many of whom insisted that such a volume would be both timely and useful. Consequently, we agreed to undertake the task of assembling this book, with the objectives of making it available as soon and as inexpensively as possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume grew out of two SEPM-sponsored events, an SEPM Research Conference that took place in Casper, Wyoming, in 2002 and an SEPM Research Symposium that was held at the AAPG/SEPM Annual Meeting in 2003. Several other papers have been added to broaden the range of examples presented. The theme of the volume, "Incised Valleys in Time and Space", has been chosen because of the comparison of valleys of different ages and in different settings is a valuable approach to understanding the role of the many factors that interact to create the valley and to emplace the subsequent valley-filling deposits. Each example, whether modern or ancient, represents a real-world experiment that lacks the temporal and spatial scaling issues that inhibit the application of laboratory experiments. Of course, the dependent and independent variables cannot be "controlled" in natural systems, but our ability to deduce the approximate values of these quantities (e.g., subsidence, sediment supply, climate) is increasing continually, such that semiquantitative and even quantitative estimates can be made in some cases. Almost all of the papers in the volume discuss more than a single incised valley, comparing two or more contemporaneous valleys, or valleys of different ages in the same geographic area. Such comparisons bring similarities and differences into sharper focus than any collection of individual case studies could, and highlight the relative importance of the many factors that influence the resulting sedimentary succession.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the second of three volumes in which the recent knowledge of the extent and chronology of Quaternary glaciations has been compiled on a global scale. This information is seen as a fundamental requirement, not only for the glacial community, but for the wider user-community of general Quaternary workers. In particular the need for accurate ice-front positions is a basic requirement for the rapidly growing field of palaeoclimate modelling. In order to provide the information for the widest-possible range of users in the most accessible form, a series of digital maps was prepared. The glacial limits were mapped in ArcView, the Geographical Information System (GIS) used by the work group. Included with the publication is a CD with digital maps, showing glacial limits, end moraines, ice-dammed lakes, glacier-induced drainage diversions and the locations of key sections through which the glacial limits are defined and dated. The last deglaciation is also shown in 500 year time-steps. The digital maps in this volume cover the USA and Canada and include Greenland and Hawaii. Both overview maps and more detailed maps at a scale 1: 1,000,000 are provided. Also available:Part I: Europe, ISBN 0-444-51462-7Part III: South America, Asia, Africa, Australia, Antarctica, ISBN 0-444-51593-3

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the major growth of the world’s population over the past century, as well as rapid urbanisation, people increasingly live in crowded cities. This trend is often accompanied by proliferation of poorly built housing, uncontrolled use of land, occupation of unsafe environments and overstretched services. When a natural hazard strikes such a city many people are vulnerable to loss of life and property. This book explores what these people think and feel about the threats that they face. How do they live with perils ranging from earthquakes to monsoons, from floods to hurricanes, in the 21st century? The authors are drawn from a large range of disciplines: Psychology, Engineering, Geography, Anthropology and Urban Planning. They also reflect on how perils are represented in multiple cultures: the United States, Japan, Turkey, Bangladesh, the United Kingdom and New Zealand. The book therefore not only brings to light the ways that different cultures represent natural hazards but also the different ways in which various disciplines write about living with perils in the 21st century. The book is addressed both to researchers and to organizations involved with risk management and risk mitigation.
