Download or read book Structure and Function of Biological Membranes written by Lawrence I. Rothfield and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structure and Function of Biological Membranes explains the membrane phenomena at the molecular level through the use of biochemical and biophysical approaches. The book is an in-depth study of the structure and function of membranes. It is divided into three main parts. The first part provides an overview of the study of the biological membrane at the molecular level. Part II focuses on the detailed description of the overall molecular organization of membranes. The third part covers the relationship of the molecular organization of membranes to specific membrane functions; discusses catalytic membrane proteins; presents the role of membranes in important cellular functions; and looks at the membrane systems in eukaryotic cells. Biochemists, cell physiologists, biologists, researchers, and graduate and postdoctoral students in the field of biology will find the text a good reference material.

Book Synopsis Fundamentals of Molecular Structural Biology by : Subrata Pal
Download or read book Fundamentals of Molecular Structural Biology written by Subrata Pal and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2019-08-15 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamentals of Molecular Structural Biology reviews the mathematical and physical foundations of molecular structural biology. Based on these fundamental concepts, it then describes molecular structure and explains basic genetic mechanisms. Given the increasingly interdisciplinary nature of research, early career researchers and those shifting into an adjacent field often require a "fundamentals" book to get them up-to-speed on the foundations of a particular field. This book fills that niche.
Book Synopsis The Core Concepts of Physiology by : Joel Michael
Download or read book The Core Concepts of Physiology written by Joel Michael and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-02-20 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers physiology teachers a new approach to teaching their subject that will lead to increased student understanding and retention of the most important ideas. By integrating the core concepts of physiology into individual courses and across the entire curriculum, it provides students with tools that will help them learn more easily and fully understand the physiology content they are asked to learn. The authors present examples of how the core concepts can be used to teach individual topics, design learning resources, assess student understanding, and structure a physiology curriculum.

Book Synopsis Protein Structure — Function Relationship by : D.L. Smith
Download or read book Protein Structure — Function Relationship written by D.L. Smith and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although many pursue understanding of the relationship between protein structure and function for the thrill of pure science, the pay-off in a much broader sense is the ability to manipulate the Earth's chemistry and biology to improve the quality of life for mankind. Immediately goals of this area of research include identification of the life-supporting functions of proteins, and the fundamental forces that facilitate these functions. Upon reaching these goals, we shall have the understanding to direct and the tools required to implement changes that will dramatically improve the quality of life. For example, under standing the chemical mechanism of diseases will facilitate development of new therapeutic drugs. Likewise, understanding of chemical mechanisms of plant growth will be used with biotechnology to improve food production under adverse climatic conditions. The challenge to understand details of protein structure/function relationships is enormous and requires an international effort for success. To direct the chemistry and biology of our environment in a positive sense will require efforts from bright, imaginative scientists located throughout the world. Although the emergence of FAX, e-mail, and the World Wide Web has revolutionized international communication, there remains a need for scientists located in distant parts of the world to occasionally meet face to face.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuing to explore the relationship between the chemistry of metals and life processes, this volume in the Metal Ions in Biological Systems series examines the degradation of environmental pollutants by micro-organisms. It covers the action of micro-organisms and metalloenzymes on lignin, tannins, hemicelluloses, cellulose and aromatic compounds, as well as on halogenated aromatics and aliphatics; analyzes mechanistic aspects; considers the role of metalloproteases in biotechnology and wastewater sludge treatment; and describes the metal-dependent conversion of inorganic nitrogen and sulfur compounds.
Book Synopsis Introduction to Continuum Biomechanics by : Kyriacos Athanasiou
Download or read book Introduction to Continuum Biomechanics written by Kyriacos Athanasiou and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with the study of continuum mechanics applied to biological systems, i.e., continuum biomechanics. This vast and exciting subject allows description of when a bone may fracture due to excessive loading, how blood behaves as both a solid and fluid, down to how cells respond to mechanical forces that lead to changes in their behavior, a process known as mechanotransduction. We have written for senior undergraduate students and first year graduate students in mechanical or biomedical engineering, but individuals working at biotechnology companies that deal in biomaterials or biomechanics should also find the information presented relevant and easily accessible. Table of Contents: Tensor Calculus / Kinematics of a Continuum / Stress / Elasticity / Fluids / Blood and Circulation / Viscoelasticity / Poroelasticity and Thermoelasticity / Biphasic Theory
