Book Synopsis Structure and Function of Invertebrate Oxygen Carriers by : Serge N. Vinogradov
Download or read book Structure and Function of Invertebrate Oxygen Carriers written by Serge N. Vinogradov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oxygen binding proteins are large multi unit proteins ideally suited for the study of structure function relationships in biological molecules. This book, based on a Symposium at the Xth International Biophysics Congress in 1990, provides a synthesis of recent advances in our knowledge of invertebrate oxygen carriers such as hemoglobins, hemocyanins, and hemorythrins. Comprehensive reviews are combined with new research results of importance to all biochemists and molecular biologists interested in oxygen carriers in general, their gene structure and comparative biochemistry. Of particular value are the studies of invertebrate oxygen binding proteins which perform their function and have structures vastly different from the vertebrate hemoglobins and myoglobins, as well as numerous examples of modern molecular techniques as applied to research on this diverse group of proteins.

Book Synopsis Respiratory Biology of Animals by : Steven F. Perry
Download or read book Respiratory Biology of Animals written by Steven F. Perry and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2019 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oxygen uptake for metabolic energy demand and the elimination of the resulting carbon dioxide is one of the essential processes in all higher life forms; in the case of animals, everything from protozoans to insects and vertebrates including humans. Respiratory Biology of Animals provides a contemporary and truly integrative approach to the topic, adopting a strong evolutionary theme. It covers aerobic metabolism at all levels, from gas exchange organs such as skin, gills, and lungs to mitochondria - the site of cellular respiration. The book also describes the functional morphology and physiology of the circulatory system, which often contains gas-carrying pigments and is important for pH regulation in the organism. A final section describes the evolution of animal respiratory systems. Throughout the book, examples are selected from the entire breadth of the animal kingdom, identifying common themes that transcend taxonomy. Respiratory Biology of Animals is an accessible supplementary text suitable for both senior undergraduate and graduate students taking courses in respiratory biology, comparative animal physiology, and environmental physiology. It is also of relevance and use to the many professional academics requiring a concise but authoritative overview of the topic.

Book Synopsis Blood and Tissue Oxygen Carriers by : Charlotte P. Mangum
Download or read book Blood and Tissue Oxygen Carriers written by Charlotte P. Mangum and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigations of the oxygen carriers range from the characterization of natural populations to measurements of tenths of nanometer distances between atoms. The scope is so great that few biologists and biochemists can fully comprehend the primary literature in its entirety. In addition, the findings of the past two or three decades have advanced the field so rapidly that a truly current account is not readily accessible to a general audience. In recognition of the problem a symposium was held and its proceedings published in the American Zoologist in 1980. Although it included several research reports, most of the contributions were intended to summarize then state-of-the-art information on molecular structure and respiratory function at a level that could be understood by biologists and biochemists who are not experts on our subject. Judging from the reprint requests with which the authors were inundated, the assessment of need had been accurate. I believe that the need for an update, which is wholly focused on communication to the general audience, is even greater in 1992. I therefore asked the authors of this volume to address individuals who might otherwise turn in vain to an advanced textbook of physiology or biochemistry. I have, of course, requested a more comprehensive coverage than would be possible in a general text, but one that is not more parochial. Just as textbooks differ vastly in the level at which their subject matter is presented, so the level of non-expertise was conceived differently by the contributors to this volume.
Book Synopsis Structural Biology Using Electrons and X-rays by : Michael F Moody
Download or read book Structural Biology Using Electrons and X-rays written by Michael F Moody and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2011-03-03 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural Biology Using Electrons and X-Rays discusses the diffraction and image-based methods used for the determination of complex biological macromolecules. The book focuses on the Fourier transform theory, which is a mathematical function that is computed to transform signals between time and frequency domain. Composed of five parts, the book examines the development of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), which allows the calculation of the images of a certain protein. Parts 1 to 4 provide the basic information and the applications of Fourier transforms, as well as the different methods used for image processing using X-ray crystallography and the analysis of electron micrographs. Part 5 focuses entirely on the mathematical aspect of Fourier transforms. In addition, the book examines detailed structural analyses of a specimen’s symmetry (i.e., crystals, helices, polyhedral viruses and asymmetrical particles). This book is intended for the biologist or biochemist who is interested in different methods and techniques for calculating the images of proteins using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). It is also suitable for readers without a background in physical chemistry or mathematics. Emphasis on common principles underlying all diffraction-based methods Thorough grounding in theory requires understanding of only simple algebra Visual representations and explanations of challenging content Mathematical detail offered in short-course form to parallel the text
