Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Estimates of the current and future structure of employment in sub-Saharan Africa (2005–20) are obtained based on household survey estimates for 28 countries and an elasticity-type model that relates employment to economic growth and demographic outcomes. Agriculture still employs the majority of the labor force although workers are shifting slowly out of the sector. Sub-Saharan Africa’s projected rapid labor force growth, combined with a low baseline level of private sector wage employment, means that even if sub-Saharan Africa realizes another decade of strong growth, the share of labor force employed in private firms is not expected to rise substantially. Governments need to undertake measures to attract private enterprises that provide wage employment, but they also need to focus on improving productivity in the traditional and informal sectors as these will continue to absorb the majority of the labor force.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manufacturing-led development has provided the traditional model for creating jobs and prosperity. But in the past three decades the conventional pattern of structural transformation has changed, with the services sector growing faster than the manufacturing sector. This raises critical questions about the ability of developing economies to close productivity gaps with advanced economies and to create good jobs for more people. At Your Service? The Promise of Services-Led Development (www.worldbank.org/services-led-development) assesses the scope of a services-driven development model and policy directions that can maximize the model’s potential.
Book Synopsis Towards Full Employment (Routledge Revivals) by : Ciaran Driver
Download or read book Towards Full Employment (Routledge Revivals) written by Ciaran Driver and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-11 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the time in which this book was first published in 1987, mass unemployment had emerged as the dominant, most visible, problem of the West European economies. The post-war experience of expansion was remarkable in that it experienced growth high enough to sustain a consensus on the possibility and desirability of full employment. This period declined into one of poor economic performance in the 1970s. Growth slowed and the subsequent years were characterised by painful adjustment and dislocation. In this challenging discussion of ways to overcome unemployment Ciaran Driver stresses the importance of managed restructuring. Driver focuses attention of the role of investment in fixed assets and human resources, and argues that governments do have a major role in steering the economy through a period of turbulent change, and that there are policies which can move the economy towards full employment. This book is ideal for students of business and economics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is concerned with the nature of the service economy. It looks at conceptual issues associated with services, the factors which have traditionally distinguished service activity from the production of goods, and how innovations in technology and industrial organization are altering these orthodox distinctions. It focuses on explanations for the rapid expansions of the service sector, and documents the shift from goods to services. It also examines the issue of nonstandard employment in Canada, and focuses on the skill content of jobs. In addition, it addresses the relationship between human capital and employment outcomes, and Canada's capacity for developing human resources. It reports the results of a major Economic Council study of income distribution trends. Finally, it presents conclusions and policy implications.
