Book excerpt: The complexes [Ru(bpy)2(bpSOp)](PF6)2 (bpSOp = 1,3-bis(phenylsulfinyl)propane), [Ru(bpy)2(bpSOb)](PF6)2 (bpSOb = 1,4-bis(phenylsulfinyl)butane), [Ru(bpy)2(PhSOEtSPh)](PF6)2 (PhSOEtSPh = 2-(phenylsulfinyl)ethylsulfanylbenzene), and [Ru(bpy)2(PhSOEtSePh)](PF6)2 (PhSOEtSePh = 2-(phenylsulfinyl)ethylselenobenzene) were synthesized and investigated by a number of techniques. The structure of these complexes were characterized by 1D and 2D NMR along with X-ray crystallography. Electrochemical measurements were performed on monosulfoxide metal complexes and S to O linkage isomerization was found to occur after oxidation of ruthenium(II) to ruthenium(III). MLCT irradiation of the complexes in solution in conjunction with electronic absorption measurements have shown that the monosulfoxide complexes undergo S to O linkage isomerization and the bissulfoxide complexes undergo SS to SO and SS to OO isomerization upon absorption of a single photon. It has been shown that small or simple modifications to the sulfoxide chelate in polypyridyl ruthenium sulfoxides lead to dramatic changes in the ground and excited state dynamics and kinetics of these complexes. Specifically, increasing the size of the chelating ring of a bidentate sulfoxide ligand through the insertion of a methylene group has been shown to increase the efficacy and speed of isomerization while the chemical nature of the 2nd donor atom in a bidentate sulfoxide ligand plays a pivotal role in the observed photophysics and photochemistry of these complexes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chromic or colour related phenomena are produced in response to a chemical or physical stimulus. This new edition will update the information on all those areas where chemicals or materials interact with light to produce colour, a colour change, or luminescence especially in the imaging, analysis, lighting and display areas. The book has been restructured to show greater emphasis on applications where 'coloured' compounds are used to transfer energy or manipulate light in some way therefore reducing the details on classical dyes and pigments. In the past eight years, since the previous edition, there has been a remarkable increase in the number of papers and reviews being produced reflecting the growth of interest in this area. This ongoing research interest is matched by a large number of new technological applications gaining commercial value covering e.g. biomedical areas, energy, data storage, physical colour, bio-inspired materials and photonics. This book appeals to industrial chemists, professionals, postgraduates and as high level recommended reading for colour technology courses.

Many common points emerge, and the book may facilitate the development of hybrids in which the qualities of the “parents” are enhanced.” –Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2011 With applications in optoelectronics and photonics, quantum information processing, nanotechnology and data storage, molecular materials enrich our daily lives in countless ways. These materials have properties that depend on their exact structure, the degree of order in the way the molecules are aligned and their crystalline nature. Small, delicate changes in molecular structure can totally alter the properties of the material in bulk. There has been increasing emphasis on functional metal complexes that demonstrate a wide range of physical phenomena. Molecular Materials represents the diversity of the area, encapsulating magnetic, optical and electrical properties, with chapters on: Metal-Based Quadratic Nonlinear Optical Materials Physical Properties of Metallomesogens Molecular Magnetic Materials Molecular Inorganic Conductors and Superconductors Molecular Nanomagnets Structured to include a clear introduction, a discussion of the basic concepts and up-to-date coverage of key aspects, each chapter provides a detailed review which conveys the excitement of work in that field. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photochromism is the reversible phototransformation of a chemical species between two forms having different absorption spectra. During the phototransformation not only the absorption spectra but also various physicochemical properties change, such as the refractive index, dielectric constant, oxidation/reduction potential, and geometrical structure. The property changes can be applied to photonic equipment such as erasable memory media, photo-optical switch components, and display devices. This book compiles the accomplishments of the research project titled “New Frontiers in Photochromism” supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan. The project focused not only on the above-mentioned classical subjects in photochromism, such as color changes, optical memory, and optical switches, but also on fundamental physicochemical studies and unprecedented application fields that have not yet been explored in photochromism. The latter topics include light-driven mechanical motion, photocontrol of surface wettability, metal deposition on solid materials, photocontrol of chiral properties, ultrafast decoloration dyes, and femtosecond laser experiments, among others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of all the different areas in computational chemistry, density functional theory (DFT) enjoys the most rapid development. Even at the level of the local density approximation (LDA), which is computationally less demanding, DFT can usually provide better answers than Hartree-Fock formalism for large systems such as clusters and solids. For atoms and molecules, the results from DFT often rival those obtained by ab initio quantum chemistry, partly because larger basis sets can be used. Such encouraging results have in turn stimulated workers to further investigate the formal theory as well as the computational methodology of DFT.This Part II expands on the methodology and applications of DFT. Some of the chapters report on the latest developments (since the publication of Part I in 1995), while others extend the applications to wider range of molecules and their environments. Together, this and other recent review volumes on DFT show that DFT provides an efficient and accurate alternative to traditional quantum chemical methods. Such demonstration should hopefully stimulate frutiful developments in formal theory, better exchange-correlation functionals, and linear scaling methodology.
