Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Colloquium on Structure, Information, Communication, and Complexity (SIROCCO) is an annual research meeting focused on the relationship between information and e?ciency in decentralized (distributed, parallel, and network) computing.Thisyear,SIROCCOcelebratedits15thanniversary.Overtheyears, the colloquium has become a widely recognized forum bringing together - searchers interested in the fundamental principles underlying the interplay - tween local structural knowledge and global communication and computation complexity. SIROCCO covers topics such as distributed algorithms, compact data structures, information dissemination, informative labeling schemes, c- binatorial optimization, and others, with potential applications to large-scale distributed systems including global computing platforms, peer-to-peer systems andapplications, socialnetworks, wirelessnetworks, andnetworkprotocols(such as routing, broadcasting, localization). SIROCCO 2008 was held in Villars-sur- Ollon, in the Swiss Alps, June 17–20, 2008. There were 52 contributions submitted to SIROCCO 2008. All papers - derwent a thorough refereeing process, where each submission was reviewed by at least 3, and on average 3.4, Program Committee members. After in-depth discussions, the Program Committee selected 22 high-quality contributions for presentation at the colloquium and publication in this volume. We thank the authors of all the submitted papers, the Program Committee members, and the external reviewers. Without their dedication, we could not have prepared a program of such quality. Book Synopsis Principles of Ad-hoc Networking by : Michel Barbeau
Download or read book Principles of Ad-hoc Networking written by Michel Barbeau and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2007-04-30 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles of Ad Hoc Networking presents a systematic introduction to the fundamentals of ad hoc networks. An ad-hoc network is a small network, especially one with wireless or temporary plug-in connections. Typically, some of the network devices are part of the network only for the duration of a communications session or, in the case of mobile or portable devices, while in some close proximity to the rest of the network. These networks can range from small and static systems with constrained power resources to larger-scale dynamic and mobile environments. Wireless ad hoc networks facilitate numerous and diverse applications for establishing survivable dynamic systems in emergency and rescue operations, disaster relief and intelligent home settings. Principles of Ad Hoc Networking: Introduces the essential characteristics of ad hoc networks such as: physical layer, medium access control, Bluetooth discovery and network formation, wireless network programming and protocols. Explains the crucial components involved in ad-hoc networks in detail with numerous exercises to aid understanding. Offers key results and merges practical methodologies with mathematical considerations. Principles of Ad Hoc Networking will prove essential reading for graduate students in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics and Physics as well as researchers in the field of ad hoc networking, professionals in wireless telecoms, and networking system developers. Book Synopsis Guide to Wireless Sensor Networks by : Sudip Misra
Download or read book Guide to Wireless Sensor Networks written by Sudip Misra and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-05-29 with total page 725 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overview and Goals Wireless communication technologies are undergoing rapid advancements. The last few years have experienced a steep growth in research in the area of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). In WSNs, communication takes place with the help of spatially distributedautonomoussensornodesequippedtosensespeci?cinformation. WSNs, especially the ones that have gained much popularity in the recent years, are, ty- cally, ad hoc in nature and they inherit many characteristics/features of wireless ad hoc networks such as the ability for infrastructure-less setup, minimal or no reliance on network planning, and the ability of the nodes to self-organize and self-con?gure without the involvement of a centralized network manager, router, access point, or a switch. These features help to set up WSNs fast in situations where there is no existing network setup or in times when setting up a ?xed infrastructure network is considered infeasible, for example, in times of emergency or during relief - erations. WSNs ?nd a variety of applications in both the military and the civilian population worldwide such as in cases of enemy intrusion in the battle?eld, object tracking, habitat monitoring, patient monitoring, ?re detection, and so on. Even though sensor networks have emerged to be attractive and they hold great promises for our future, there are several challenges that need to be addressed. Some of the well-known challenges are attributed to issues relating to coverage and deployment, scalability, quality-of-service, size, computational power, energy ef?ciency, and security.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings contain the papers presented at ANTS 2010, the 7th Int- national Conference on Swarm Intelligence, organized by IRIDIA, CoDE, U- versitéLibre de Bruxelles,Brussels, Belgium, during September 8–10,2010.The ANTS series started in 1998 with the First International Workshop on Ant Colony Optimization (ANTS 1998), which attracted more than 50 participants. Since then ANTS, which is held bi-annually, has gradually become an inter- tional forum for researchers in the wider ?eld of swarm intelligence. In the past (since 2004), this development has been acknowledged by the inclusion of the term“SwarmIntelligence” (nextto“AntColonyOptimization”)intheconference title. This year's ANTS conference was o?cially devoted to the ?eld of swarm intelligence as a whole, without any bias towards speci?c research directions. As a result, the title of the conference was changed to “The International Conf- ence on SwarmIntelligence.” This name change is already in place this year, and future ANTS conferences will continue to use the new title. Thisvolumecontainsthebestpapersselectedoutof99submissions.Ofthese, 28 were accepted as full-length papers, while 27 were accepted as short papers. This corresponds to an overall acceptance rate of 56%. Also included in this volume are 14 extended abstracts. Of the full-length papers, 15 were selected for oral presentation at the c- ference. All other contributions, including short papers and extended abstracts, werepresentedin the formof poster presentations.Following the conference, the journal Swarm Intelligence will publish extended versions of some of the best papers presented at the conference.
