SIROCCO covers topics such as distributed algorithms, compact data structures, information dissemination, informative labeling schemes, c- binatorial optimization, and others, with potential applications to large-scale distributed systems including global computing platforms, peer-to-peer systems andapplications,socialnetworks,wirelessnetworks,andnetworkprotocols(such as routing, broadcasting, localization). SIROCCO 2008 was held in Villars-sur- Ollon, in the Swiss Alps, June 17–20, 2008. There were 52 contributions submitted to SIROCCO 2008. All papers - derwent a thorough refereeing process, where each submission was reviewed by at least 3, and on average 3.4, Program Committee members. After in-depth discussions, the Program Committee selected 22 high-quality contributions for presentation at the colloquium and publication in this volume. We thank the authors of all the submitted papers, the Program Committee members, and the external reviewers. Without their dedication, we could not have prepared a program of such quality. These features help to set up WSNs fast in situations where there is no existing network setup or in times when setting up a ?xed infrastructure network is considered infeasible, for example, in times of emergency or during relief - erations. WSNs ?nd a variety of applications in both the military and the civilian population worldwide such as in cases of enemy intrusion in the battle?eld, object tracking, habitat monitoring, patient monitoring, ?re detection, and so on. Even though sensor networks have emerged to be attractive and they hold great promises for our future, there are several challenges that need to be addressed. Some of the well-known challenges are attributed to issues relating to coverage and deployment, scalability, quality-of-service, size, computational power, energy ef?ciency, and security.

As a result, the title of the conference was changed to “The International Conf- ence on SwarmIntelligence.” This name change is already in place this year,and future ANTS conferences will continue to use the new title. This corresponds to an overall acceptance rate of 56%. Also included in this volume are 14 extended abstracts. Of the full-length papers, 15 were selected for oral presentation at the c- ference. All other contributions, including short papers and extended abstracts, werepresentedin the formof poster presentations.Following the conference,the journal Swarm Intelligence will publish extended versions of some of the best papers presented at the conference.
