Book excerpt: This book contains auxiliary calculation tools to facilitate the safety assessment of reinforced concrete sections. Essential parameters in the design to the ultimate limit state of resistance such as the percentage of reinforcement and the position of the neutral axis in concrete cross-sections, as well as the control of the maximum stresses in service limit states are provided by these tools. A set of tables, charts and diagrams used to design cross-sections of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures are supplied. The most current beams and columns cross-sections namely, rectangular, circular and T-sections are considered. These tools have been prepared in line with the provisions of the new European regulations, with particular reference to Eurocode 2 – Design of Concrete Structures. The book stands as an ideal learning resource for students of structural design and analysis courses in civil engineering, building construction and architecture, as well as a valuable reference for concrete structural design professionals in practice.

Book excerpt: Structural Concrete discusses the design and analysis of reinforced and prestressed concrete structural components and structures. Each of the eight chapters of the book tackles a specific area of concern in structural concrete. The text first deals with the serviceability and safety, and then proceeds to the properties of materials and mix designs. The next two chapters cover reinforced concrete beams and slabs. Chapter 5 discusses column and walls, while Chapter 6 tackles reinforced concrete frames and continuous beams and slabs. The next chapter discusses design structures, while the last chapter covers prestressed concrete. The text will be of great use to undergraduate students of civil and structural engineering. Professionals whose work involves concrete technology will also find the book useful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Timber, steel, and concrete are common engineering materials used in structural design. Material choice depends upon the type of structure, availability of material, and the preference of the designer. The design practices the code requirements of each material are very different. In this updated edition, the elemental designs of individual components of each material are presented, together with theory of structures essential for the design. Numerous examples of complete structural designs have been included. A comprehensive database comprising materials properties, section properties, specifications, and design aids, has been included to make this essential reading.

Book excerpt: This textbook describes the basic mechanical features of concrete and explains the main resistant mechanisms activated in the reinforced concrete structures and foundations when subjected to centred and eccentric axial force, bending moment, shear, torsion and prestressing. It presents a complete set of limit-state design criteria of the modern theory of RC incorporating principles and rules of the final version of the official Eurocode 2. This textbook examines methodological more than notional aspects of the presented topics, focusing on the verifications of assumptions, the rigorousness of the analysis and the consequent degree of reliability of results. Each chapter develops an organic topic, which is eventually illustrated by examples in each final paragraph containing the relative numerical applications. These practical end-of-chapter appendices and intuitive flow-charts ensure a smooth learning experience. The book stands as an ideal learning resource for students of structural design and analysis courses in civil engineering, building construction and architecture, as well as a valuable reference for concrete structural design professionals in practice.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1921 edition. Excerpt: ...moment should extend on each side of a line drawn through the column center at right angles to the direction of the band at least a distance equal to thirty-five one-hundredths of the panel length, and bars in diagonal bands used as reinforcement for positive moment should extend on each side of a diagonal through the center of the panel at least a distance equal to thirty-five one-hundredths of the panel length; and no splice by lapping should be permitted at or near regions of maximum stress except as just described. Continuity of reinforcing bars is considered to have advantages, and it is recommended that not more than one-third of the reinforcing bars in any direction be made of a length less than the distance center to center of columns in that direction. Continuous bars should not all be bent up at the same point of their length, but the zone in which this bending occurs should extend on each side of the assumed point of inflection, and should cover a width of at least one-fifteenth of the panel length. Mere draping of the bars should not be permitted. In four-way reinforcement the position of the bars in both diagonal and rectangular directions may be considered in determining whether the width of zone of bending is sufficient. (m) Reinforcement at Construction Joints.--It is recommended that at construction joints extra reinforcing bars equal in section to 20 per cent of the amount necessary to meet the requirements for moments at the section where the joint is made be added to the reinforcement, these bars to extend not less than 50 diameters beyond the joint on each side. (n) Tensile and Compressive Stresses.--The usual method of calculating the tensile and compressive stresses in the concrete and in the reinforcement, based on...

Book excerpt: This book is intended to guide practicing structural engineers familiar with ear lier ACI building codes into more profitable routine designs with the ACI 1995 Building Code (ACI 318-95). Each new ACI Building Code expresses the latest knowledge of reinforced concrete in legal language for safe design application. Beginning in 1956 with the introduction of ultimate strength design, each new code offered better uti lization of high-strength reinforcement and the compressive strength of the con crete itself. Each new code thus permitted more economy as to construction material, but achieved it through more detailed and complicated design calcula tions. In addition to competition requiring independent structural engineers to follow the latest code for economy, it created a professional obligation to fol low the latest code for accepted levels of structural safety. The increasing complexity of codes has encouraged the use of computers for design and has stimulated the development of computer-based handbooks. Before computer software can be successfully used in the structural design of buildings, preliminary sizes of structural elements must be established from handbook tables, estimates, or experienced first guesses for input into the com puter.

Unique self-experiments and realistic problems help readers further understand concrete's structural significance and potential as a building material. Includes the most recent methods of design and analysis of reinforced concrete structures and is based on the American Concrete Institute Code (ACI 318-05). Easy to follow using a step-by-step, non-calculus approach. Includes a series of experiments readers can conduct on their own to comprehend concrete's structural significance and understand more about concrete as a building material. Practicing architects and engineers, in particular individuals preparing for the licensing exams. People interested in the building design and construction can also benefit from the book as it follows a step by step approach in the design and analysis of concrete structures.

Book excerpt: Structural Elements Design Manual is a manual on the practical design of structural elements that comprise a building structure, namely, timber, concrete, masonry, and steel. Practical guidance on the design of structural elements is provided in accordance with the appropriate British Standard or Code of Practice. Plenty of worked examples are included. Comprised of five chapters, this book begins with an overview of interrelated matters with which the structural engineer is concerned in the design of a building or similar structure. The British Standards and Codes of Practice are also considered, along with loading, structural mechanics, and theory of bending. The discussion then turns to timber, concrete, masonry, and steel elements, with emphasis on safety considerations and material properties. This monograph should prove useful not only to students of structural and civil engineering, but also to those studying for qualifications in architecture, building, and surveying who need to understand the design of structural elements.
